ParticipantHowdy from NC…. what part of Va you in? I have alot of family in the Fredircksburg/Spotsylvania County area. Matter of fact I learned how to drive in a 280Z running the back roads between Culpepper, Spotsy and other counties up that way. Ranched for a couple of years in Thornburg. My uncle always swore I should go into Rally Racing…. I made that 280 scream, blind turns didn’t worry me much and if your familiar with that area you know they are truly blind. Small hill before a turn that obscures the road and a tree line to hide the direction… oh the memories…. any way……. speed and bullet proof is wayyyy behind me now which is a good thing.
Learn all you can in the MSF and take every caution and warning they can give you to heart. Maybe when I go up to visit the family if your near by we can get a scenic going. Good Luck!! and Welcome!Munch
ParticipantMoney down can help some…. co-signer will help better. Patience is priceless, but $2,ooo will get you a good used one to start with. Aim with what you have to focus on what you want.

ParticipantI wouldn’t say it “WILL MAKE you a better rider”. However what it does do is give you more confidence in the protection you have and the comfort and mobility of good equipment. In the winter time I wear layers and all that bulk will give me a sluggish and heavy feel and makes me confine my movements on the bike. Once the heat comes back and I am able to scale back down quite a bit I feel lighter and more maneuverable.
I can move better, see better, and not heavy feeling and can throw my 900 around with the best of ’em. The better gear moves with you…not you having to force it to move. All the while allowing your skill that you have to come out.Munch
ParticipantVery nice…the last one is very much a keeper!!!! (may have to steal it for the desktop.)

ParticipantOuch! Sorry to hear that. The 500 did something like that and it ended up being a pinched fuel line due to mis routed vacuum lines… had to be under specific conditions to make it happen. Hopefully yours is something that simple.

Participantimpact rating would be my guess….not DOT

ParticipantI deal with these situations all the time. Of course when I approach a light I am already slowing down anyways. Give a couple of brake flashes ahead of time just in case I do need to slow down and start braking early…. I am on my bike with all kinds of smiles…. what am I in a hurry for… now for your situation… yea been there… blew the light every time! I don’t care if the LEO sees me do it… a fine is a lot better then a claim

ParticipantIt is an aftermarket “universal” deal. Though they had me get model specific when ordering. Tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful sunny day so i will see about taking one or two. I will be getting some Risers for the handle bars to bring them back an inch or two so if I wanted I can go into La-z-boy mode.
This is gonna help a lot in my trip soon. 500 miles south… week stay … 500 miles back here….can’t wait!Munch
ParticipantI wear chaps actually… as some one here pointed out they will not protect your arse should you end up sliding on it. However for the rest of ya your well covered. For me its more of a convenience to have the upper portion of my lower half accessible for that one to many Mt dew Situations. Try peeling outta a full leather racing suit while doing the pee pee dance….lol. I wear my chaps all the time without exception. I will also be getting some draggin’ jeans as re enforcement behind that for just in case.
As far as ego or image… if you carry yourself well and explain to the person grinning the purpose that grin fades into a head nod.
Ofcourse… me looking like I do … I rarely see the grin.April 22, 2009 at 12:10 am in reply to: *twitch* Going crazy while bikes in shop *twitch twitch* #17943Munch
ParticipantROFL… I think I am worse then the three of ya. I ride to work almost everyday. When work is slow I get to sit and watch all the “regular job” holders ride by… Grrrrrrrrrrr. Man I get DT’s bad. Oh and when I get my daughters, whole different story, I mean I love em and all….but am I a bad father for sometimes wondering if I should have quit with the first? I mean really… the oldest or youngest can ride with me but when I have both I am stuck in the cage. Just kidding….sorta.
Luckily I have not had to leave my 900 at the shop for any given length of time. I am in pretty good with the mechanics since we share the same profession. I just hang out with them for a little while and ask all kinds of ridiculous questions and ride her back home the same afternoon.
Not to say the first time I have to I won’t be ready to strangle something by the time I get her back. Hang in there… it’ll all be over soon!
Oh yea…don’t recommend the catalog idea…that’s how mortgages get spent.Munch
ParticipantFor me it is not wether TO WEAR or NOT TO WEAR a helmet. I can however appreciate those who feel it should be within their power to choose.
My concern is here in NC there seems to be varying opinions specifically with half helmets as to what is legal and what is not.Munch
ParticipantAsk a wandering LEO. I know here on the other side of the mountains you can find some waiting some where either to chat with the next shift for a few or to catch the unwary speedster. Just look for them …pull over and ask.
