Sorry I have seem to have had a brain fart on link formatting….but maybe this will be a decent startAugust 10, 2008 at 6:22 pm in reply to: Riding with one or two fingers on brake lever: for or against? #10201MunchParticipantI cover only near town at the few stop lights I actually get near. The drivers here are a bit nuts and blind. Being a mechanic the supposed “effort” it takes to close the brakes with 2 fingers is a non issue. Nor is the apparent lack of control some feel they have with only 2 fingers on the throttle. On the Highway I do it from time to time just to let the air flow through my gloves a bit better. If your worried about cracking 2 fingers due to a breakage…. lol…your worried about the wrong part of the near collision.
All said and done though… its up to preference just as your style of bike is.
Matt’s signature explains it all: “The two seconds between ‘Oh S**!’ and the crash isn’t a lot of practice time.”MunchParticipantCool, one of your many trips you just gotta take should be through the Appalachian Mts…. Shenendoah Valley is beautiful especially near fall. On a bike will enhance that much more.
MunchParticipantWelcome…how far north? I got family near Spotsylvania county and met my ex-wife in Alexandria… any who….lol. Welcome!!! Maybe in one of my many trips through there I will give ya a wave.
August 8, 2008 at 12:38 am in reply to: You must have heard it all before: a complete newbie unsure which motorcycle to buy… #10045MunchParticipantI have the Vulcan 500LTD. And yes its very much a commuter…. 2 weeks and 300 miles. I turn wrenches all day on automobiles and the idea of being semi hunched over on a sport bike already makes my back cringe. The Vulcan is very comfortable and allows me to situate myself on my long ride to and from work. My only caution on the Vulcan is the “leg room” at OEM may be cramped for you, but there are after market parts from places as scootworks.com that sell forward control relocation. I am in full agreement with six-shooter…. I would not go above 500cc for learning, but everything else is left to personal style and comfort.
MunchParticipantRelax Relax Relax!!!!! I was almost one of many victims of the death grip syndrome first start. You get on there… you get excited and you realize your not sure the sensitivity of the throttle…. you roll it a tad too much, maybe even have to make a dreaded left turn right off the bat , and then next thing you know your sitting there with the clutch held both brakes on and a near wide open throttle grumbling to yourself. Breathe, and relax. Stay away from inanimate objects….lol. Just a tip from what my first outing was like. Of course I decided to tackle my bike in my yard ( I live in the country) The way I saw it (and I have come to think I made the right decision) , If I learned to take corners in wet uneven ground, that is my yard, on street tires and a cruiser…. the road was gonna be simpler.
But above all ….. relax!!!MunchParticipantGrats!!!!
MunchParticipantThanks, I am taking to it fairly quickly…. Traffic today going to work showed me that 3 mph is my minimum speed before I feel I have to drop my foot.Good or no? Definitely was a good work out for take offs and stops…..and got to play alot with positioning and gearing down. All in all a good morning… never mind I was 5 mins late. Might get to play in the rain tomorrow, 50% says the rain man. Got on the waiting list for MSF but its looking like October before I get the chance.
MunchParticipantWhats on your mind while you are riding? And welcome… I have found alot of tips here myself.
MunchParticipantGot my first accessory today…. kinda got a kick out of it after the wtf was that moment. It hit right near the collar bone….leaned a bit to look in mirrors and sure enough, perfectly planted on my red shirt was the most vibrantly colored, and newly deceased, bumble bee attached to my shirt sprawled in the “Oh $H**” position. Have to admit…. at 60 mph I thought it would hit harder then that…. Beetles definitely hit harder (not the VW kind, those are easier to dodge)
MunchParticipantI am proud owner of a Vulcan…. So far I am getting 55 (tad over) mpg. But of course thats all back roads and a little bit of rider break in , which means more throttle and clutch in an abnormal amount of “same time”. This week will be all to work and back which is 36 miles straight highway, if it improves I will let you know.
Oh and I am 5’10” 180 maybe 190″ depending if I’ve gone to the gym that week or not. In case your that much of a number cruncher.MunchParticipantI thought that was why the wives rode on the back?
MunchParticipantWow, sounds like a mental meltdown my lil’ sister would have. Personally I grew up around HD type people. In my area the stigma with em go 1 of 2 ways. Your either a gear head and affiliated someway with a bike gang…or… your a Dr. that went for the expensive bike instead of the Ferrari. I ended up getting the Vulcan 500…. smaller more controllable motor with the big bike look, oh yea… I still can hear after my 45 min commute to work.
I got mixed emotions from my family and girlfriend…. Family…. “be sure your the poster child of safe” ….Girlfriend ” Go for it!!!! We can go cruisin’ after the kids are outta the house”. This is pre- bike purchase.
Post purchase: Family …..well their motto only changed with “The bike is purdy , but, make sure your the poster child….”
Girlfriend “OMG Please be carefull…..you mean oyu have to take it to 70 mph!!!”
LOL…..amazing how things change. -
