Hello all!
I’m a 30 something female with a Suzuki GS500F, 2005. Great bike, and happy with it from the day it came home from the dealership.
But, I’m currently having a problem.
I’d dying here- my bikes still in the shop. Week 2 and counting….the days…minutes…and at points, even seconds!
*flops on the floor all dramatic life, fakes death*Its so SUNNY, and warm, but not hot, its perfect riding weather, and it looks like it will STILL be another week or two before its back home with me, and I’m able to ride.
I’m having a tune up, leak down, compression, and a bit of cosmetic work done, and the delay is getting the parts in for the cosmetic bit. I’m almost ready to tell them “forget new ferings, strip it naked, I’ll get the aftermarket parts, take it home, put them on myself, ride it, and bring it back when they come in!”
Now, I’m sure the guy in the service dept is about ready to shoot me. Every other day I phone, and he keeps saying the same thing “3-8 days, if they are IN STOCK”
Gaaah! Is it possible to have both withdraws AND separation anxiety from a bike?
I think I have them. Maybe a few other unrecognized ones lurking in my brain too.Just wanted to vent a bit, and ask if anyone else has gone through this- and WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP SANE, when all you see and hear around you are bikes?
I keep trying to tell myself, its ONLY 2 weeks, MAX, before its home with mommy again, but, woh…. patience has NEVER been my strong point- at least, not when it comes to having my bike being fondled by a semi stranger in a shop… hehehe!
Help?
Anyone?
April 21, 2009 at 10:00 pm #17940chaiyaParticipantI hate it when my girl is sick (in the shop…or in pieces in my garage
Waiting for parts is horrible… I needed a new carb not that long ago and it was back ordered for what seemed like forever. Every time I saw another person happily riding around …I was very sad. She was in a million pieces in the garage…very depressing to come home to day after day waiting for that damn part.I’m also fickle… if she stays sick too long I start shopping for her replacement … day dreaming of a new bike helps keep me sane… The last time my bike was in the shop… I went to a demo day at a triumph dealership…got to ride a brand new bike
April 21, 2009 at 10:55 pm #17941BouncingRadicalParticipantI just got my back after a little over a 2 week shop visit. I feel ya chaiya, every time I saw someone riding, which was a ton because the weather is unusually awesome right now, I wanted to be out there so bad instead of in my truck. It made me a saaad panda.
April 22, 2009 at 12:10 am #17943MunchParticipantROFL… I think I am worse then the three of ya. I ride to work almost everyday. When work is slow I get to sit and watch all the “regular job” holders ride by… Grrrrrrrrrrr. Man I get DT’s bad. Oh and when I get my daughters, whole different story, I mean I love em and all….but am I a bad father for sometimes wondering if I should have quit with the first? I mean really… the oldest or youngest can ride with me but when I have both I am stuck in the cage. Just kidding….sorta.
Luckily I have not had to leave my 900 at the shop for any given length of time. I am in pretty good with the mechanics since we share the same profession. I just hang out with them for a little while and ask all kinds of ridiculous questions and ride her back home the same afternoon.
Not to say the first time I have to I won’t be ready to strangle something by the time I get her back. Hang in there… it’ll all be over soon!
Oh yea…don’t recommend the catalog idea…that’s how mortgages get spent.April 22, 2009 at 12:28 am #17945chaiyaParticipantMaybe a sidecar would solve your “multiple child” transportation issue ? I would have loved to ride in a sidecar when I was little
Anyway…i can understand getting stuck taking the car on a perfectly good riding day. My husband does not ride …so whenever we go somewhere together…always the car.
April 22, 2009 at 7:52 am #17952TerriKhaliParticipantHonestly, I’m going INSANE!
So, Im reading all the wonderful replies, KNOWING I’m not alone, it sure helps, but then I turn on the radio while I’m reading…
“Biker Blowout, new 4 piece leathers for as low as…..” blah, blah, blah….I don’t know HOW I’m going to survive. 2 weeks feels like *forever* right now.
Great, now the news and weather… and of CORSE, sunny, sunny, sunny! You know, Chaiya, thats a GREAT idea about just dreaming and maybe even test riding a bit… kinda afraid it will make the DT’s worse, but only one way to really find out- right?
My husband also does not ride… but I must say, hes starting to look at my bike, and hes now putting up comp screen savers of a couple nice ones… I think his is on the horizon. He also is starting to think that when the “family” goes for a 100 mile trip to my sisters, getting stuck in the minivan with 2 kids just isn’t as much fun as I’m having in front of him. He’s my blocker/drag CAGE on long trips, *lol* and I’m thinking that he’s got this mental pic of us all on bikes.
I also got my 14 on a little 50cc scooter (14 is legal starting age, but it MUST be 50cc or under) so she’s being brought up right already… she EVEN makes her own insurance payments, and pays for her gas, and EVERYTHING. It actually GAVE her a REASON to work… and that turned out well.Munch, you sound like a GREAT dad, lowering yourself to a cage for the kids… thats a GOOD daddy… See, I’m the BAD mom, if we are using your examples. I VERY rarely take my kids out with me, 11 and 14. I LIE and tell them that I just dont feel comfortable with riders…. which, as soon as they realize that I DO have passengers- and usually OFTEN,(I will usually give a lift home my co-workers when we work late past bus times, which is about half my working shifts) I think they will strangle me, BUT, its *MY* time. I have spent well over 3/4 of 15 YEARS with them, but, umm, MY bike = MOMMY time, and I just do NOT want to share….
Elwood, man, I *HAVE* been watching your vids! I also know you have taken a bunch down because I had to be REALLY persistent to find some up on this site that was still available! I must also add, cam down low, is OK, but I’d like more centered on your handlebars Thanks! Because of you, my children live another day while Mommy is “waiting for her happy bike” *lol* Thats what they call it when I’m getting grumpy, go for a ride, and return ready for the rest of the day!
Thanks guys… I’ll be lurking in here alot… ANY and ALL ideas will help. Its SAD to know you have all felt my pain, but oddly comforting to know that I’m NOT the only one that really gets misty eyed when they see another bike, and theirs is unrideable.
I’m just trying to keep focused on my work and “spring” things like yard work and such…. with the cordless on my hip, ready to take that call telling me to “Come pick her up- shes ready!”
P.S. My pic currently, was taken JUST before she left me, 2 weeks ago… you can see what needs replacing….April 22, 2009 at 9:52 pm #17965TerriKhaliParticipantWell, heres a slightly bigger pic
I don’t know wich of these 2 will show up, so I’ll attach both, and know for next time.
Notice the lack of mirror, signal, OIL COVER, not even a scuff on the frame that you can see 3 feet away, and fering on this side?
Yup. I went down, 10km (5 m/per) on the last turn coming home….
The only damage was the bike, (and my pride) and yes, stupid me, it WAS the first ride of the season.
I KNOW I know better, but I slipped into the “I’m home, its 2 blocks from parking, nobody is ever on the road” stupidity. While nobody was on the road, a CAT was…. Cats OK, btw. My pride is still getting a good kicking tho. I KNOW better. I DO!Well, that shows ya, always be alert, mind on what your doing, and LEATHERS ON. I mean, this was so close to home too. it was a stupid laps, and one that shall not be repeated.
So, yah… I’ll be surfing your youtube, and I’ll check this other guy out too!
You know, I rather did need this to happen tho. I needed a shake to wake up, and tell me that no matter HOW long you have ridden, and own a bike, never slack off.
Trust me, the “mental” bruises from where I’m still kicking myself wont soon be shrugged off.I did just get word from the shop. The plastics on its way! I SHOULD be on the road, CAREFULLY, middle of next week!
April 23, 2009 at 7:50 am #17975ronkoreParticipantPut the money down for my new ninja 250 last Friday, still haven’t ridden it. Hasn’t even been delivered. DMV paperwork’s the holdup, waiting for the DL389 form (The one that waives the driving test in CA) from the MSF class so I can get M1 status.. can’t get insured with the best rate until that happens, I was told by my agent. So, checkin the mail every day, nothin so far Maybe tomorrow?
lol I’m goin crazy here, though with the last couple days being around 100 degrees I wasn’t missing good riding weather at least.
Sounds like you’re in a worse predicament though..
April 23, 2009 at 3:00 pm #17978TerriKhaliParticipantHey ronkore, just a THOUGH, but can’t you just get what rate you can for insurance, then when your paper work gets in, go back to your guy, and have it adjusted? I had a few friends that have done that, I think the difference was about $17 dollars extra for just the one month. It really was such a small difference, and it got them on their bike faster…. maybe you should make a phone call to ask?
But again, Im in Canada, and things seem to be done differently up here.
Not to make you panic, but what if “next day” of mail checking turns into 2-3 weeks? or it gets lost in the mail? Or delivered to the wrong address? It does happen, and it usually does, when its something that your really waiting for….
You know, it NEVER hurts to ask, right?April 23, 2009 at 3:04 pm #17979megaspazParticipantSimple answer… get another bike. One bike in the shop, ride the other one…
April 23, 2009 at 3:45 pm #17986TerriKhaliParticipantMega, I like how you think!
Only one problem… wanna buy me a second bike? I can’t afford 2 w/ insurance atm…
April 23, 2009 at 4:05 pm #17987megaspazParticipanthrm… what insurance carrier you got? i just changed to state farm which is really cheap… To full coverage, 100/300/100, my SV650S and Ducati 848, costs me a little over $1000 USD for the year… or basically $40.00 USD a month per bike… with only a $500.00 USD deductible…
April 24, 2009 at 1:19 am #17998ronkoreParticipantThe rate difference if I asked for a policy right now with just a permit is over twice as high, I think it’s worth waiting to save that much. Most insurance companies here won’t even touch someone that doesn’t have a license (M1). They said I’d have to pay the high amount for the whole term if I went with it right now, regardless of the fact if I got the license before the term ended.
So, yea it sucks waiting but it’ll be worth the money saved in the end. Didn’t come in the mail today either, btw.. as for murphy’s law, lol I wouldn’t be surprised, but it still isn’t past the two week window, so I can’t call em yet. If I’m lucky it comes tomorrow, otherwise it’ll be another weekend without riding. At least the dealer is being cool about keeping the bike there. I shoulda taken the MSF class earlier!
April 24, 2009 at 3:30 am #18001TerriKhaliParticipantI’m paying $12 per/mo… in Canada. 20+ years, no accidents, clear driving… you know, to current.
But still can’t afford the PRICE of a new bike. Just thought I’d throw the insurance in there, cause, well, “nothing ventured, nothing gained”.
April 24, 2009 at 3:32 am #18002TerriKhaliParticipantOh, sorry, carrier is ‘5 star’… something… but I have: apt tenant insurance, 2 vehicles, and personal all through them, for the last 10+ years….
