ParticipantThat’s awesome that you found a 250 to use until you get some experience! Have fun!

ParticipantI watched UFC too but at home so I didn’t ride my bike anywhere but it’s getting too cold for me now. I’m going to winterize really soon. I wanted to be a trooper but now I have a cold and my husband said he’s pretty sure that riding the bike in 40 degree weather didn’t help. I suppose he is right. WHAAAAAA
Candice
ParticipantFirst of all I had experienced riders telling me to buy an 1100cc bike, don’t wear a helmet, and ride on the highway and I hadn’t even taken the class, sat on a bike, or drove stick shift. Ignore those that tell you to get such a big bike. The stealerships (I have stolen this word from some other poster, sorry can’t remember who) always want you to buy a bigger bike so they can make more moola, ignore their advice. Yes, I completely agree with do not buy a bike until you complete the MSF course, very smart.
Don’t get fed up, stop talking to your friends about what bike you are going to get because until you take the class and really start shopping to buy you will change your mind a thousand times anyways.
I bought from a dealership because there were two bikes I wanted to buy on Craig’s List and neither person had the title and then the one got his title and the bike wouldn’t start when I went to go see it. So, there you go.
Good luck, just look forward to taking the class and don’t worry about what bike to buy yet, although, I did exactly the same thing, first I wanted a Triumph, then I wanted a Suzuki GS250, then I ended up with a Suzuki LS 650. See!
Candice
ParticipantYour price quotes sound ridiculous. I went with Geico for a 650 and I pay $250.00 or so. You need to ask them why it is so high.
Candice
ParticipantI looked into this and my suzuki manual told me to, clean the bike of all the dirt and bugs, polish up the chrome, put some vinyl protector on the seat, something about taking out spark plugs and putting in a tablespoon of oil and then put the spark plugs back in, change the oil, fill up the gas tank to full and put some stabilizer in there, and take out the battery, put in rags in the exhaust pipe so no critters move in.
I decided I’m going to clean her up, fill up the tank to full and add the stabilizer stuff, disconnect the battery, and stuff my open pipes with rags. Then in the spring, I’ll just do an oil change and be ready to go. I live in Illinois and I think I am going to winterize my bike this coming weekend. Boo hoo.
Candice
ParticipantI called my insurance – Geico – over the weekend and I can call anytime after Oct. 1st to change my coverage to winter coverage which is just comprehensive, then I can call back when I’m ready to ride again and they will add all the other stuff back in. yeah!
Candice
ParticipantYour “scare” will happen when you least expect it, so, try to always expect it. Then, it probably won’t be as scary since you were expecting it? Know what I mean?
Candice
ParticipantRegarding the post above: “STUPID PURCHASE – I think you’re crazy buying this for a first bike (and I’ve been riding daily for years).Sell it and buy something more appropriate before you kill yourself.” – by ANONYMOUS – how typical.
The original poster already admitted that he/she made a mistake so that wasn’t a very nice way to put it.
It was not a stupid purchase because he/she didn’t know any better at the time.
Candice
ParticipantLive and learn right? At least you know you need to be cautious with that R6. My brother has that bike and he told me it is not for beginners which is me. So, I think you should definitely take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation class and possibly keep the R6 but in the meantime get a crappy ass 250 from somewhere and ride it around for a few months, then get back on your R6 and see how it feels. I think you would enjoy riding much better when you are not scared of your bike. Whatever you decide, take care, ok!

ParticipantI talked to a friend of mine who I hadn’t talked to in a long time and he said when cars make stupid moves on him he takes off their mirrors. But then, he gets away with a lot of stuff you and I and the regular joe shmoe would not. He also told me that if I ever lay the bike down at 40mph to climb on top of the bike as it’s laying down. Does he think I am acrobatic or what? I mean, I’ll keep it mind but….

ParticipantI borrowed the money from my 401K right before the market crashed. So I pay myself back with 6 percent interest, but it goes to me and I own the bike. Then they automatically deduct however much from my paycheck each pay period and it just goes back into the 401K.

ParticipantPeople are in a hurry to go nowhere. I love when when in the car they pull out in front of you and there is absolutely NO ONE behind me, like they couldn’t wait the 2 seconds for me to pass and the way is clear. That bugs the crap out of me. And to pull out in front of you and then stop? How ridiculous! I think because I was on the bike I expected people to KNOW that it is doubly dangerous and they shouldn’t pull out in front of me. If only it was a perfect world.
Candice
ParticipantYes, you are right, it does happen in the car too, I suppose I just felt much more vulnerable since I was on my bike.
Candice
ParticipantI am totally convinced I am a much better car driver now that I ride a motorcycle. Even my husband commented on how much better I drive since I started riding. I think people who don’t ride or don’t know someone who rides that is close to them just really don’t get it. Even my friend, when she was driving in the city, she drives like a maniac and there were tons of motorcycles on the road they day I was with her. She barely looked when changing lanes, yelling at everybody, driving really frisky, OMG, I was appalled.
Jim – that sounds pretty scary, glad you were able to get out of that one.
