ParticipantLooks like yet another attempt for an over extended local government find an easy way to get money to spend on crap they don’t need to spend it on.
I know nothing of New York but don’t be surprised if alot of these bills start popping up everywhere. Mostly due to environmentalists. The “green” movement is going to start being a foundation for most of bills like these. Matter of fact if that bill got approached that way I am sure you wouldn’t have had time to even come close to protesting it.
Here in NC and I think in most states there is a law concerning aftermarket parts NOT voiding warranties. The law says that an automaker can not void a warranty for aftermarket replacements UNLESS they are offering free replacement of parts. Or alter the original design of the vehicle. Seems to me that may be an avenue to look into for protesting. If New York is willing to offer free replacement for “first time violators” or newly purchased late model motorcycles it might would be more “agreeable”. Yes ofcourse without tax payer money. Looks to me that this is just an attempt to gain more funding and to quell some of Home Owner Association types that have nothing better to do with their time then to sit around all day and whine about what they don’t like. Very good chance that even if it were to get passed the LEO’s would have more serious stuff to look out for but should you do something wrong to get “investigated” it gives them the freedom to tack on one more revenue generating ticket. Like say PDA’s….some states against the law….rarely enforced unless they are just finding more ways to get their point across.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantLeft hand turn much…. wow, that tire is severely un evenly worn. Glad your relatively ok. Welcome back to your site. Guess one thing I hate to notice is that some your own advice needs to be revisited to your own situation. You had the gear but in disrepair. Glad it didn’t go worse.
Hope you have a speedy recovery!Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantKnown history for the used kind. Also find a site ( I will have to look through my bookmarks) that can give recall statuses of bikes your looking at. Obviously scratches and dents. Excessive discoloration on pipes. Paint showing slight variations in tint.
Always ask for warranties, if any and what EXACTLY they cover. Or better what they don’t cover.
These days the internet gives you an advantage. Ask to look at the bike out in natural lighting, showroom lights can hide scratches or mis match paint by exaggerating the polish, nice trick they learned form Jewelry stores.
Best advice I can give….shop with an empty wallet. Find something you like… talk to the owner or sales rep and get a little bit of movement going in paperwork direction…never anything that will trap you into HAVING to buy it. Then……. go out to eat and then a movie. Allow yourself to get distracted enough to think it through…still want it…. the wait will be shorter since the ball got rolling earlier and the sales man couldn’t sell it from under you. Change your mind…..well you shouldn’t have signed for anything just yet so your not married to it… walk out.
For the ultimate beginner… ask what local laws are for delivery, License required or just someone who is licensed? If not required…can they deliver it if your not comfortable riding it home for the first time? Kick around an idea of maintenance program and really think through wether its worth the investment….. that is if they offer one.
ok brain shutting down…5 hours til I go to work…. need to catch a nap… I am sure others will fill in the blanks and add more…..Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantWelcome… and having been through Louisiana several times… I know sometimes Craiglist isn’t gonna be the problem….lol…..finding the exact location of the bike in some cases can prove to be a challenge.
side note…I hate Sulfur Louisiana.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantBetter question…. you good with a wrench and finding parts? 1980’s …. nice retro move. First bike….. questionable. If its in pristine shape from the quick reads I did…. its a top heavy cruiser.. said to be tough but being top heavy may not work in your best interest…. how much a beginner? MSF or equivalent? Only sat on the ones in dealerships?
In the words of “Johnny number 5″….”MORE INPUT!”…lol…80’s bike needed an 80’s movie…. quit rolling those eyes. :^)Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantThank the squids for that one. Its partially of what made me dislike sport bikes earlier in my life… some dumas squid cruising in front of the high school winding out 1st or 2nd tryin to sound cool and going maybe 15 mph. Or worse popping up in front of traffic to try and show their extreme stupidity.
I am over most of my bias now…. but its slow going as the responsible ones on here and many like y’all are outnumbered near 3 to 1 here (squid to responsible).
Watched a kid today as a matter of fact gun it at neck jerk acceleration to try and beat a yellow light.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantGo with the V&H … .if you’re not good at turning wrenches or heck even if you are… I would highly recommend professional install. Main reason…… warranty. As far as upgrading exhaust…no other mods forward of that will be necessary. In cars sometimes you need a certain set up due to the engine being tuned to having to use some of the back pressure. Motorcycles, I could be wrong, but am highly doubtful its required, with maybe the exception of the single piston pumpers.
With mods remember from the mod back needs changing… seeing your changing the arse end of the cycle… your good. More to remember… if your getting it in you have to get it out…. meaning if you had gotten that RAM air deal you would need a more free flowing exhaust anyways. Since your only doing the pipes…. well imagine blowing through a coffee straw…now using same volume of air and pressure (yes they are different) and blow through say a McD’s straw. Your still getting the same thing out. Less restriction in the bigger straw though. For you the major difference will be the sound. The V&H have the baffles set up to give you a certain sound. Drill out processes only make them louder. Its the difference of say sounding like Hog (bike kind) and a pissed off lawnmower.
My votes the V&H!!Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantLol…the candle wax trick is fairly simple…. but only if you can manage to get to the bolt, screw, nut whatever have ya. If you can, try to get a notch in the stripped piece… via a screw driver or whatever…. heat the screw up fairly hot…. take a candle stick and press it on the screw….the wax will melt and since its a thin liquid will seep into the threaded areas….once it cools down it acts as a lubricant in between the threads. Doesn’t always work but usually for me does better then PB blaster or WD40. If you have to use a Phillips ( + ) head then use that to tap the notches into the top of the screw. being its brass it shouldn’t take much.
Question….ok …..your fairly sure the screw is brass or just has that color……..and what is the body made of?Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantBest advice…. and this is gonna sound wrong…..but get your woman to help spot for ya ( unless you are one…in which case your golden). Most cases she will watch and look and walk around and look again and let you know if your to high or too low. They are more critical of placement then we guys seem to be. Think I am wrong… ask a married man that has had to move a couple of times and hang pictures. Nothing like a person not HAVING to do the actual labor to have the luxury of being perfect, where as the one who IS doing the labor gets frustrated or impatient and says “screw it they only see one side at a time”
Other then that …… measure twice….look once…measure again ..then cut. A mock up stencil would be a good idea to.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

ParticipantYea if the bike has good quality Chrome….not the Wal-mart we just coated it chrome…but REAL nickel based individually dipped chrome the blade will not hurt it. The surface is non porous and anything melted on top just sits there like its on wax. One thing I have noticed is that on some older bikes the Chrome pipes are not double walled. Usually where you get the “blu-ing” effect from the heat and use. The V500 I have is double walled…. the inside will receive the bulk of the heat and the outer wall a significant amount still (ie: don’t touch hot) but drastically less…. enough to keep from “blue-ing” .

ParticipantDon’t be offended if they don’t…. alot of time around here you won’t get it. Mainly because they are focused ahead of them rather then a couple lanes over from another direction. I know I do it to more then what I get back. I have also caught myself missing one or two. I always keep it out long enough that they may see it in their mirror just in case :^) .
Its habit for me as I am an ex Jeep person…. still would be if modifications weren’t my version of crack. Which is why I do not turn wrenches on my bike. My preferred ignorance about the mechanics of my bike is keeping my wallet safe. Don’t think I haven’t already looked at the exhaust upgrade and the belt drive conversions…. but I prefer to resign myself to not knowing how to do it to keep me from spending more on it in upgrades then I do payments. Anywho….Jeepers …..the real ones….. wave to each other also. NO not the ones that got the Jeep as a way to quell the “I wanted the Hummer but couldn’t afford it for the status symbol” crowd….usually recognized by the extensive chrome, shiny paint job and the winch up front that still has a readable safety tag.
Ogre knows what I am talking about.Remember “Shiny side -up rubber side down …….with that in mind it should keep you safe and sound”. (sorry rhyme brought to you by my daughter)

ParticipantOnly caution with heat….. make sure there are no soft plastics in the vicinity of proposed heated area. I know your thinking “well …duh!” . I am a mechanic and trust me…. I fix more of the “well …duh!” situations then I should. As SC said start small and work up … the last thing you wanna do is mis judge the size of the screw and end up boring out the threads of the hole.
Let us know if ya get it…. if not I can look back in some of my tricks….like…mild heat and candle wax…… don’t laugh…. saved many a engine head that way.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
