Please read the following AMA Action Alert released yesterday.
http://capwiz.com/amacycle/issues/alert/?alertid=12305941&type=CU&show_alert=1
The NYC Council has revived a bill that sat idle for two years and they are trying to push it through the full council next week. This bill basically requires motorcycles to have stock (or EPA-approved) pipes in NYC. Second offense includes forfeiture of the bike.
I have stock pipes on my motorcycle and I’m not sure that I’ll ever change them out but this bill targets motorcycles only and definitely seems too severe. I fear any bills like this set an unhealthy precedence. In the article, there is contact information to make your opinions known. Please consider weighing in on this bill.

That said, if it weren’t for the few selfish dipsticks with obnoxiously loud roaring pipes, this wouldn’t be an issue.
You can help by joining the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) who are constantly fighting anti-motorcycle legislation.
December 14, 2008 at 4:39 pm #15264MunchParticipantLooks like yet another attempt for an over extended local government find an easy way to get money to spend on crap they don’t need to spend it on.
I know nothing of New York but don’t be surprised if alot of these bills start popping up everywhere. Mostly due to environmentalists. The “green” movement is going to start being a foundation for most of bills like these. Matter of fact if that bill got approached that way I am sure you wouldn’t have had time to even come close to protesting it.
Here in NC and I think in most states there is a law concerning aftermarket parts NOT voiding warranties. The law says that an automaker can not void a warranty for aftermarket replacements UNLESS they are offering free replacement of parts. Or alter the original design of the vehicle. Seems to me that may be an avenue to look into for protesting. If New York is willing to offer free replacement for “first time violators” or newly purchased late model motorcycles it might would be more “agreeable”. Yes ofcourse without tax payer money. Looks to me that this is just an attempt to gain more funding and to quell some of Home Owner Association types that have nothing better to do with their time then to sit around all day and whine about what they don’t like. Very good chance that even if it were to get passed the LEO’s would have more serious stuff to look out for but should you do something wrong to get “investigated” it gives them the freedom to tack on one more revenue generating ticket. Like say PDA’s….some states against the law….rarely enforced unless they are just finding more ways to get their point across.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
December 14, 2008 at 5:50 pm #15266Sangria7ParticipantSO the question I would have is would LEO actually enforce something like this and how would they know if something is stock on first glance, unless you have really loud obnoxious pipes….
December 14, 2008 at 6:06 pm #15267megaspazParticipantYes, there are LEOs that will enforce this. My guess the majority of enforcement would be add on charges. So you’re speeding, you get pulled over, and the LEO adds the aftermarket pipe to the ticket while towing your ride. And EPA approved pipes have a stamp on them engraved on the can.

If there’s anything more important than my ego
around, I want it caught and shot now…December 14, 2008 at 11:59 pm #15269Sangria7ParticipantMan thats why I moved to Texas….its one of the last free”er” states in the US.
Both NY and Cali are starting to get overregulated.
I lived in both states before too…
December 15, 2008 at 3:08 pm #15273MunchParticipantLooked into other postings of this elsewhere and thought about something. I am surprised the aftermarket players aren’t up at arms about this to. As densely populates as NY is…. thats gonna be a huge chunk out of their pockets.
Do I agree with loud pipes……no …atleast not if I can hear ya a half mile away like your sittin next to me. Is it my place to tell you what to do with the money You worked for….. hell no.
All these Prozac babies and their attempts to justify “control” over others is a serious overcompensation for the lack of success in their own micro world. Now we know why Vettes are declining in sales.
Even though I also do not like the idea of lobbyist they are a necessary evil……. at times. AMA is a good place to start….another group helping to take up the banner is the BRC…Blue Ribbon Coalition ( I think its what the C is) . Been a member of BRC since I had my jeep. BRC helps with all things not caged. and some that are.
http://www.sharetrails.org/I hope that all persons in NY that see this posting take action and not inaction. Stand up ! So you get sit down and ride your own ride. Not what the old fart thats been locked up in a 3 piece suit and a blood choking tie thinks you need to ride.
Spaz…..whats abate? Got a link?…….found it: http://www.abate.org/Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
