JirikiParticipant
The nice thing about CA, I always ride into work, and park right beside the door
JirikiParticipantThat is the main reason, acceleration is ‘unimpressive.’ If you drive a prius, then you will be happy with this motorcycle… however, I drive a modified subaru wrx… I couldn’t wrap my head around how I was moving slower on a motorcycle than my car!
That being said, I had a ton of fun with the bike… and I think I am much more comfortable shifting/turning than someone who has the same riding time as me on a larger bike. I tend to learn things quickly and want a greater challenge (one I think would be offered by the 650R).
If I could afford it, I would have both the 650R and 250R. I would use the 250R as a track bike (there is a 250 circuit not too far away).
The other main reason was sort of hinted at in my original post in ‘general’ about upgrading 250R vs getting 650R. It works on the highway, but I feel sorry for it! The little engine is spinning away at 9-9.5k rpm (when you are forced above the speed limit to pass a truck, obviously I wouldn’t normally be doing 80-85…). If I can’t sell it and end up keeping, then I will up the power by re-jetting/full exhaust and then use this extra power to keep the same acceleration characteristics but change the sprocket sizes to lower the RPMs.
If I was going from a 250R to a Hayabusa so soon, then I’d hope you guys would be trying to stop me
JirikiParticipanti changed my rear shock preload to the middle setting.. i am 195 lbs… if you set it all the way, you’d be bouncing off every bump and it would be really dangerous
JirikiParticipanti have had my 250R for about 3-4 months and 2500+ miles and I am looking to upgrade to a 650R… i know others decide to stay with their 250s… it depends on your personal progression and risk aversion
JirikiParticipanthey tango, I am an Ottawa ex-pat (now in California)…
I too had bad experiences with powersports, avoid like the plague…
I bought a new 08 250R (now trying to sell so I can upgrade to 650R)… however, I will have put around 2500 miles (4000km) on it by the time it sells. This was very valuable experience and will help me with the 650R. This is especially true with shifting as you are always changing gears (good practice downshifting)
the only reason I bought it new was because the 08 250 was waaayy better than the 07… also, I had an idea I would end up selling it after 6 months to a year and I (correctly) assumed that demand would still be really high for this bike.
Oh, and I have never dropped it (knock on wood). Dropping your first bike is not a forgone conclusion. The 07 650R is ~390 pounds wet whereas the 250R is closer to 350 I think… even if you are puny, I don’t think a 40 pound weight difference will change the likelihood of dropping the bike (because you aren’t actually lifting all 40 pounds, you only have to lift whatever amount of the center of gravity is not over the wheels, which is obviously angle dependent)
it might be worth making a sticky post somewhere that MSF/RideSafe/OCS courses usually have at least a 2 month wait… I think a lot of people are surprised by that… however, they are well worth the wait
JirikiParticipantlong rides are fun
I might be busy that weekend tho, how about this weekend?
Another fun ride I did in the west-bay last weekend was 280 to 84 (La Honda) to 1 (along the coast, stopped at a beach) to Prescadero to Alpine to Skyline to 9…
alternatively, you could go all the way to Santa Cruz on the 1 and come up 17… since there are a lot of deaths on Skyline/9
here is a link to the route I am talking about:
routeJirikiParticipanthmmm… so the 07’s have candy plasma blue… now I am way too tempted…
JirikiParticipanthow much you willing to pay
man, i thought I was done with choosing bikes… spaz, you were right on sunday: “these things are like crack”
JirikiParticipantit varies wildly depending on your location/sate
in bay area, california… it was $250 (and I am pretty sure it is all booked up)
JirikiParticipantonly ‘Megaspaz’ i found on facebook was ‘Megaspaz Haz Landed’
nothing under megaspaz2k email, had to remove 2k to get the ‘haz landed’ guy… actually… that email didn’t work either
JirikiParticipantHaz Landed?
JirikiParticipantanyone use this?
http://www.boltlockcorp.com/it looks interesting…
i also saw a padlock that goes through the cross-drilled brakes with a 100+ dB siren that goes off if it is moved… anyone ever tried using one of those?
JirikiParticipanti only have 2k miles under my belt, so my ‘spirited’ riding barely keeps up with a prius
what happened to PMs?
JirikiParticipantI switch out my visor (clear for night, gold for day) and it can be pretty annoying. If I don’t have a backpack with me to carry the second visor, I will use the clear and carry my sunglasses.
In my opinion, sunglasses are less ideal because they tend to shake… maybe if you were wearing aviators you wouldn’t notice, though…
although annoying, the gold during the day seems to give me better visibility than sunglasses and it also protects my pasty white skin from the sun! and it looks badass… can’t forget that
JirikiParticipanti wear everything all the time… which includes some pretty flashy white cordura overpants… some of the other riders I know choose the reinforced jeans with knee armour underneath… that is an option if you want to look ‘normal.’
I would never, under any circumstances, ride without my leather jacket, gloves, helmet, boots…
