There are two ways to approach the beginning of your biker days: one is to have all the gear ready before you buy your bike, and the other is to rush into your nearest biker store as soon as you’ve bought your bike and purchase the basics. Whichever way you do it, it’s important to know exactly what’s necessary before you set off into the distance.
Most of your biker gear is not something to be skimped on; the essential pieces like a helmet, leathers, boots and gloves are not just for show, but also for your safety and protection. As we are well aware of just how expensive entering the world of biking can be, there are a few potential problems to bear in mind when you’re shopping for your biker gear. Such problems are easy to avoid by just planning ahead and bearing in mind a few essential tips:
Glasses
For the glasses-wearing bikers out there, sometimes finding the right eyewear for you may be tough. Some bikers aren’t comfortable with wearing contact lenses for hours on end, and are looking for a special pair of glasses for out on road. Whichever option you go for, always bear in mind that your glasses need to fit comfortably under your helmet, which can in fact be difficult to achieve. Aside from the usual hair problems that are common for bikers, there are of course more pressing issues. Choosing the right helmet is one of the most important decisions as a biker. A recent study looked at 1,061 patients that had been involved in motorbike accidents: 728 of whom were not wearing a helmet, leaving only 323 who were. Other factors in finding the right helmet include a noticeable color, a snug fit, and good ventilation and noise proofing. Take your time and try on all the helmets until you find the perfect fit.
Leather Gear
Although some may believe otherwise, the leather gear that bikers cover themselves in is not just for show – it’s a crucial safety precaution. Leather wear is of the utmost importance to a biker and just so happens to look good at the same time. Leather is the optimum material choice for motorbikes as it is breathable, flexible and durable. Motorcycles often travel faster than cars – some top-of-the-range bikes can travel between 180 and 300mph – and of course don’t offer the outer protection that a car does. Now that leather jackets are something of a fashion statement, there are some that are very unsuitable to biking. The breathability of your leather gear is key – make sure to look for good temperature control that will keep warm air in but also protect you from the sun. The better quality the material, the more protected your skin is from any potential falls. Ensure your leather jackets and trousers are designed specifically for biking, to ensure they include padding in the required areas.
