If he thinks you should start on a hayabusa, you should not trust him anymore. :-P

I’m riding an sv650s as my first bike. It’s recommended a lot as a first time more powerful bike. I’d have to agree with some caveats. But, you should probably ask him his reasons for why going with a 250cc bike is a bad idea. I’m guessing he’s probably thinking you’ll outgrow it…

The only real reason, I can think of going used over new, besides price, is if you don’t want to feel that bad if you lay it down… Other than that if you can take a friend or a pro with you to check out the bike, do so.

ShannonG correctly described countersteering… to turn left, lean left, push on the left handle bar.

Take notice that countersteering is not the same as counterbalancing… Sometimes people use the two interchangeably, but counterbalancing is shifting your weight on the bike in the opposite direction of your bike lean. Example, if you’re leaning your bike left, you counterbalance by focusing your weight away from the left by either shifting your bum to the right on the seat some or putting more weight on the right footpeg or both. Uturns are a situation for using counterbalancing.

If you take the MSF course, you’ll be riding on a 250cc bike… You can judge for yourself first hand if the bike will be OK for you. I myself started on a 650cc, so I can’t say for sure weather going higher’s going to help or hinder your riding… I would think that weight only really becomes an issue when starting and stopping (and I suppose starting from a stop position going uphill)… After rolling at speed, I’d imagine your weight becomes less of an issue…

700 bucks??? that’s really outrageous… I mean, i might pay that or more if Valentino Rossi was the instructor… :-/

But yeh, it is better to get training than learning on your own…

No, didn’t do the power commander… at least it wasn’t offered and i didn’t request it… as far as i can tell, the bike idles fine, sounds better and seems more responsive going uberslow.

Ben has a review on that bag. I like that bag… perfect for small grocery shopping. I picked this back pack up today, because, um I really dug it and it has a very robust helmet storage as well as being spacious enough to store my riding pants and other knick-knacks if i do need to change out of my riding pants…
