    Hello all:

I like what I’m reading here. I’m a 48 year old male with two teenage children who (as far as I know) still need a full time dad. I’ve wanted to ride for 30 years now and have never actually managed to begin for one reason or another – I’m getting pretty serious now. I totally agree with everything I’m reading about starting with a 250, but do have a question. I’m 6’1 and weigh 260 pounds. I figure that when I get full gear on, I’ll be about as heavy as the bike itself. Should I move up to the next size bike (say something in the 500cc range)? Reading the specs on these bikes, I see that they weigh up over the 400 pound range and may therefore ride a bit better on the open road. I do plan to graduate to a larger bike in a year or so after getting the feel of riding, but wonder if perhaps I should start a little larger? For the record, I can say that I have no intention of doing anything stupid (recall the children – oh, and a wife as well).

Thanks for your thoughts and input!

    Jay

If you take the MSF course, you’ll be riding on a 250cc bike… You can judge for yourself first hand if the bike will be OK for you. I myself started on a 650cc, so I can’t say for sure weather going higher’s going to help or hinder your riding… I would think that weight only really becomes an issue when starting and stopping (and I suppose starting from a stop position going uphill)… After rolling at speed, I’d imagine your weight becomes less of an issue…

I’m a 5’5″ woman ( no WAY am I telling you my weight!) and I started last week on a Suzuki GS500f. I don’t feel in any way that it’s ‘too much bike’. It’s very forgiving and easy to ride, and I am feeling very confident on it already.

dude, i’ve seen a ghetto 300 lb guy on 50cc scooter. I’m sure some of yall have too. Made me LMAO! If those things can carry a 300lb guy imagine a 250. Heck, i’ve seen some pretty big ppl on segways too, lol.

but it doesnt make it right, haaa- Id say yep mtorcycle training course is the way, that way you will also have more skills to deal with a 500- although I gotta say I have no doubt you will like it better, feel better, look better and ride better on a 500- but again after the course
