ParticipantI don’t think it’s just your model either… I ride with my high beams on at night since the low beams with my bike seem pretty useless as well… even more so now since I’m using a slight smoked mirrored shield.

ParticipantHow were you slowing down? Just front brakes or front+rear? Another way to help you slow down is to use engine braking. While you’re braking, shift down a gear and slowly let out the clutch, blipping the throttle a bit. Along with that, if you’re tucked, you can also get out of the tuck and sit up and use your body as wind resistence. But yeah, some cagers just don’t see and you did the right thing by attempting to slow down as much as possible. Grab a beer, relax… you’re still alive. With the possibility of road rage and the fact a cage will always beat a bike in a physical confrontation, it’s not worth getting all worked up over it.
Edit: I should say that you don’t want to downshift if in the middle of a turn or leaned over as you can cause the rear wheel to lose grip.

ParticipantDoes atv gear have armor? I’m pretty sure atv pants and them moto shirts aren’t going to do squat skidding on the pavement… Street gear’s designed to add protection for for impact via armor/padding as well as being made for better protection for skidding on the pavement. You’re probably fine with the helmet, although having bugs hit your face probably wouldn’t feel too great riding at speed. I’d still recommend investing in a full face shield helmet. Boots are probably fine, better than nothing, but you want to make sure you boots at least guard against twisting of the ankle. You’ll also want to find out if the boots you have can also withstand being ground on the pavement. Statistically, riders injure ankles, feet, and legs the most (50% of accidents), so your choice of boots is almost as important as your choice in helmets.
Take the time to choose what kind of risk you’re willing to take with your gear and if you’re comfortable with your gear’s ability to mitigate against serious injury.

ParticipantHello hello from florida and welcome! The riding portion of the MSF is the best part of the course… I think the classroom could be better if they should movies like red asphalt or wheels of death like they used to in high school driver’s ed class…

ParticipantYou can probably get an ’08 ninja for about 1 to 1.5 K more (about 4500.00 not out the door)… There is a review on the hyosong bikes, give that a look over though… Less than 3K out the door sounds like a great price money-wise though… but i know nothing about hyosong…

ParticipantYou can actually get 3 of this bag and hook 2 to the middle to make saddle bags… works peachy keen on a sports bike, but gets in the way if you wanna 2up…

ParticipantI’ve ridden on a rebel at the MSF. I thought it was a piece of shit. I’m willing to give the rebel the benefit of the doubt though as the bikes at the MSF have seen their share of war wounds from moto-noobs…

ParticipantWell, if it was a massive gust of wind (it must have been hurricane like wind), a smaller bike wouldn’t have helped him. I’m guessing it was a combination of wind that surprised him, him not being experienced enough, and being on a bike too big for him in that particular situation. Poo poo to the sales guy that let a noobie roll out of the dealership on litre bike.
But yeh, I think I’d have to agree with you. If he wasn’t on a litre bike, he might still be alive.
