So, I am new to the bike world and really need to enroll at the MSF beginner class. However, I’ve noticed there are two places around here, one is $25, while the other is $300. I’m going to assume the more expensive one is a little more extensive and is a little more “hands on,” but $275 better? So, my question for you fine folks is, if you have taken the beginner MSF class, how much did it cost you?
Also, it says I have to bring a helmet, boots, and gloves. Anyone have a suggestion for a cheap full-face helmet to use for the class? I’d prefer to save my money to buy a nice helmet that matches the bike I eventually get. I could just go with a cheap skull-cap style helmet just for the class but I will use a full-face helmet when I get my bike so I figure I should get used to it.

Oh and would just need good pants/boots they will provide the rest.

You only needed to get gloves that cover the wrist, boots that cover the ankle, long pants with no rips anywhere, and a long sleeve jacket made of “sturdiesh” material. For gloves, any cheap leather gardening gloves from your local hardware store will do.

May 22, 2008 at 4:17 pm #6557BenParticipant25 bucks?
That sounds really cheap. My course was $250ish I believe and it was over a couple days. They provided the bikes, helmets, classroom instruction etc… Also all of the instructors were MSF instructor certified, are the instructors for the 25 dollar class certified instructors as well?

It only cost $25!! All the instructors are MSF certified. From what I was told, here they get a lot of grant money for the manufactures and insurance companies, and the local dealerships provide all the 250cc bikes. What a great deal!! Just needed boots jacket and gloves. Only one problem, it is a TON!! of info to absorb in just 5 days.
May 22, 2008 at 6:01 pm #6561AzN LogiKParticipantI did it a few years ago before i turned 21, and we got a group rate for 6, so i think i paid less than $100, and the others not much more (who were all older than 21). Get in on those group rates! The more people that we got, the cheaper it got!
May 22, 2008 at 8:19 pm #6576ShannonGParticipantUp here if I BYOB (bring my own bike) it’s $700. Thank you no, I’ll have my supervisor ( a friend who is quite possibly the best rider I have ever seen) teach me. He even owns his own cones!
May 22, 2008 at 8:32 pm #6583acdeParticipantMy dad workd for the TX DPS as an driving examiner cars buses rigs and cycles. He rather me take the class to learn safely to ride. But I got the cheet cheet the anwers are a c b b c d a b c c lol kidding.
He said there a surplus of people taking there cycle test, It the fuel cost.
May 23, 2008 at 2:05 am #6596jacksonParticipantI took the Riders edge class through Harley. It was more expensive, but more convenient location. They also provided bikes and helmets, but did spend some of the class time selling their brand.
May 23, 2008 at 2:55 am #6599wishpoolParticipantHere it’s $125 for the BRC through the local community colleges. $225 if you want to take it through a HD dealership’s Rider’s Edge.
May 24, 2008 at 10:56 pm #6668yerkoolParticipantwhen i took mind 15yrs ago, it was $100. I want to re-do it again to keep my chops back up after not riding for 13yrs and its now $275, this was last month when I checked. there are only two MSF school down here in San Diego the last time I check.
May 27, 2008 at 1:36 am #6716GuinnessParticipantI’m jealous $250 is cheap. I wish it were $250 up here. In Ontario I’m paying $410 for 3 hours in class and 2 days (16hrs) on the bike. I say BC is ripping you off ShannonG $700 is outragous, however I would rather pay that then learn with no training, Good thing you have a friend who is an instructor.
Cheers
May 27, 2008 at 2:13 am #6717megaspazParticipant700 bucks??? that’s really outrageous… I mean, i might pay that or more if Valentino Rossi was the instructor…
But yeh, it is better to get training than learning on your own…
