ParticipantThey are having demo rides in my area May 23 and 24 so I will definitely do that. I am so excited! I’ll be interested in feeling the difference in power between my current bike and a Triumph. I haven’t been riding very long either and I keep telling myself to just relax, but really, I have been dreaming A LOT about the Scramblers/Bonnies. Well, when I finally do get one it will be very exciting and it gives me something to look forward to in the meantime.

ParticipantI have been dreaming about Triumphs for a year. First I liked the Bonneville t-100 and now I think I like the Scrambler. I feel like I need more riding experience before I buy a Triumph though so I’ll keep my little Suzuki for a couple more years and then maybe buy a Scrambler if I’m still interested by then. Love the looks for sure.

ParticipantInvite your Mom and Dad to take the class with you. It can be a bonding thing and your Mom will have a better idea what you are getting into.
Candice
ParticipantPlease take the MSF course ASAP and do not buy that cbr1000rr.
Candice
ParticipantI put the I-Pass in my jacket pocket and just go through, seems to work so far.

ParticipantFunny you said that you should go out into the street or sell the bike. I said the same thing to myself because I kept waving cars through the stop signs and then when it was clear I would go. I finally said to myself that I better start driving normal or sell the bike if I’m too scared of a little neighborhood traffic! I promptly got over it!

ParticipantI’m in Joliet. I thought the potholes were bad in my area but I heard from friends that in Chicago itself it’s even worse. Hmm, metal plates doesn’t sound so good either. Wicker Park is a cool area, been down to the Double Door a few times over the years. I am too scared yet to ride my bike into the city, yikes!

ParticipantOh yes getting started! My brother got his second bike and my mind just said, that would be fun. So I casually mentioned it to the hubby and surprisingly he said, sure, you can get a bike if you take the MSF course and pass. So I kind of took that as a challenge, I think he might have thought I wouldn’t pass – BUT I DID! So I did tons and tons of research on what kind of bike I wanted. I already knew I probably did not want a sports bike, I had sat on my brother’s Yamaha R6 and didn’t like the lower back breaking feeling of leaning over so far plus I didn’t really need to go that fast anyways. I really, really liked the Triumph Bonneville T-100 for the looks but I decided I didn’t need a $9000.00 brand new 800 cc bike for my first try so I ended up with a Suzuki Savage – USED. I love that thing it is so perfect for me.
Then the first time I rode it to work people kept telling me these horrible stories about accidents and people they know who died on their bikes. I was in such a panic that I was going to die on the way home that I had to find a way to calm down before the end of the work day since I live 30 miles from work so then I did TONS of research on statistical stuff and advice on how to ride the safest and all that ( thank goodness we were slow that day at work). Which actually was a good thing because I then found some tips I really liked about riding in traffic and where to position myself. I also read an article on HOW TO CRASH which I found interesting and like I might have a chance of surviving maybe. yeah. Then I rode my bike home and I was fine.
For my gear, I had already purchased a white helmet and white riding jacket because I had read that I would be more visible in white, although, I don’t really depend on that but if it helps…. Like someone said above, looking cool was a LOW priority! I look cool anyways, doesn’t matter what I wear, ha ha!
My first very short season out (Sept – Nov) I made a few rookie mistakes, learned from them and kept going! I love it!
Candice
ParticipantI also had no experience on a bike and I did not know anything about shifting gears when I took the class. I also felt like I was going to fail the first couple of exercises and then it all clicked. I think my first thought when I wasn’t getting it was, can I possibly be this stupid? REALLY? Thank goodness I figured it out! My hubby would not let me ride or buy a bike until I had taken the class. His fear is that I would buy a bike, take the class, fall during the class, and then not like it. That didn’t happen so I passed the class and bought my bike, yeah! I think the MSF class is very good and everyone should take it. My brother has been riding a motorcycle for years but he is self taught, I keep trying to get him to take the class, still working on him.
Candice
ParticipantCool. I hope you will be able to test drive it. Will keep my fingers crossed for ya!
Candice
ParticipantLOL! Thanks! I checked those out, they look good and the price is not bad either.
Candice
ParticipantHOLY CRAP! I like the color. Are you suppose to ride that in traffic or is this for off road?
Candice
ParticipantI went riding for the first time with my brother on Saturday (he has a sport bike, I don’t) and he made fun of me for waving at everyone. He says he only waves if someone waves first, I guess he’s too cool for school or something. I think he secretly likes it if someone waves though since he says he gets his waving hand all ready just in case. Cracks me up.
I will continue to acknowledge when I can, better to be friendly than not.
Candice
ParticipantYeah, I have to get better gloves, my hands freeze so I ride if it’s 50 and above. 40 would be better – longer riding season!
Candice
ParticipantChicago area is finally warming up, we had a nice weekend – 55 on Saturday and 60 something on Sunday, lots of bikes out and about for sure. Now its raining for the next 3 days, oh well! Too cold in the mornings to commute anyways, only 39 degrees plus frost at 6am, brrr.
