Nod or wave

Wednesday was an unseasonably warm day in New York so I took my bike out for the first ride of the year. There were plenty of other bikers out that day and I passed a few of them and exchanged “The wave”. Quite a few times I didn’t feel comfortable waving due to the wind and the urge to always keep my hands on the handlebars. Whenever I didn’t feel like waving, I just gave a simple nod of my head to the other rider.
Any other riders do this?

March 22, 2009 at 3:31 pm #17218MunchParticipantI nod also. Stop lights…. turns and general traffic will keep you from safely doing a wave.

Not surprisingly, I have noticed many more reciprocal waves when I am on my v-twin Suzuki Boulevard than when I am on my smaller Buell Blast. I interpret the difference being some riders consider my Blast to be a scooter and not worth the wave–irks me.
March 23, 2009 at 1:27 pm #17246RidleytheRedParticipantSometimes I miss them because I’m too busy paying attention to the fools in front of me. I usually only wave on small roads or highways. I don’t on the interstate or at stops for the same reasons as the above. Always fun to aknowledge others on the road though.
March 23, 2009 at 1:54 pm #17247CandiceParticipantI nod when I can’t wave and sometimes I’ll catch a wave out of the corner of my eye but I was too busy with what was going on in front of me to reciprocate anything. That happened on Saturday, a guy on a scooter waved and I noticed too late plus I was coming to a stop so I wasn’t able to acknowledge him and I felt kind of bad because I don’t want the scooters to think I’m ignoring them! Oh well, I know it’s a little silly but….
March 23, 2009 at 2:46 pm #17250smokeizfireParticipant…I found the BMW guys are way more snobbier than the Harley guys here in SoCal. Things that make you go hmmmmm???? I wave/nod at everybody including the Sport bikers.
March 23, 2009 at 3:17 pm #17258CandiceParticipantI went riding for the first time with my brother on Saturday (he has a sport bike, I don’t) and he made fun of me for waving at everyone. He says he only waves if someone waves first, I guess he’s too cool for school or something. I think he secretly likes it if someone waves though since he says he gets his waving hand all ready just in case. Cracks me up.
I will continue to acknowledge when I can, better to be friendly than not.
March 23, 2009 at 4:44 pm #17272RidleytheRedParticipantI’ve noticed squids on crotchrockets not wearing gear will give me nasty looks if I wave.
March 23, 2009 at 5:23 pm #17277Clay DowlingParticipantThan just the one finger next time
March 24, 2009 at 12:03 am #17300Gary856ParticipantFriendly waves are cool when I’m just cruising around at a leisurely pace and once a while another rider comes by, but it gets kind of “artificial” (like a frozen smile when you pose for a picture too long) when there are a lot of riders and you feel like you have to wave at everyone you come across. Also, in the twisties riders should really keep the hands on the bar and focus on the road. Waving in many situations breaks the concentration and reduces safety margin. I guess nodding is a good alternative, but I’m also cool with some riders not waving/nodding. I just figure that they need to focus on the ride and there’s nothing wrong with that.
March 24, 2009 at 4:02 am #17304SantaCruzRiderParticipantMy approach is to wave when I can and enjoy the response when you get it. Like others have said, I’m not going to pull my hand when I need it and I hope that no other rider does either.
Some other riders just aren’t into it and that’s their deal. You have no idea what the other guy is dealing with, could be rain grooves, pothole or trash in his/her lane, mommy didn’t love him the same as his older brother??? I’m not going to sweat someone else’s issues — whether they are relate to controlling the bike in the moment or attitude.
Go ahead and wave. If I can, I’ll wave back.
March 25, 2009 at 12:56 am #17314AmorylParticipantI’ve noticed squids on crotchrockets not wearing gear, and highsidding on the highway going 90+ because they were trying to impress their squid friends are clearly too cool to take the time to wave to me
March 25, 2009 at 1:04 am #17315AmorylParticipantthats the way I am in my wrangler, most people will wave (well the raise a hand or tip the hat kinda thing) and if I see em in time I’ll wave too. usually the only ones who don’t wave out here are young ladies who’ve clearly not been told about the jeep wave and get this look of “why’s that creep waving at me?”
if everyone waits for the other guy to wave, no one’ll wave. and then we’d all just be silly and complain “those jerks, they never wave”
I’d wave when it’s safe, nod when it’s prudent, and if I’m in a situation where I can’t do either, chances are the other guy is too.
