Keeping up with all the maintenance on a bike can be a chore or expensive if you let someone else do it. Maybe a section on upkeep will help out some guys. Just a thought as I change my own oil and check all the nuts and bolts on my bike.

I am in the middle of my MSF class at the local college. 20 hours of training over 5 days, some classroom work and lots of range work. It only cost $25!! All the instructors are MSF certified. From what I was told, here they get a lot of grant money for the manufactures and insurance companies, and the local dealerships provide all the 250cc bikes. What a great deal!! Just needed boots jacket and gloves. Only one problem, it is a TON!! of info to absorb in just 5 days.

I feel any time you have a large exciting new thing, a small little gremlin must pop up to appease the “problem gods”. I hope it is a simple inexpensive fix. Congratulations!!!! I am taking the MSF class next week, hope I do as Well as you did.

I got my gear from all over. I would definitely get your helmet at the local shop just to ensure a good fit, same with the jacket. And the added bonus of supporting small local business is a good thing. My pants and boots came from http://www.sandhillspowersports.com(not so great, I will not be ordering from them again, but they do have the best prices just not so good service) my knee armor, all my wife’s gear, assorted gloves, and some other stuff from newenough.com (They are the best!) So I guess I try to spread the love around a bit .

I spent a lot of time in the parking lot across the street. My dad taught me to drive a manual car by starting and stopping it every 20 feet so, that is what i did with my bike. And so far so good. I will be spending more time this summer in that parking lot, learning how to ride with a passenger. I want to make sure me and my (Soon to be) wife and I are comfortable before heading to the beach on the bike.

By the way GS500f are the greatest bikes !!!!

    That Sucks!!!
It is that brief moment of panic that is the worst, just as you are slowly plummeting toward the ground and think please don”t leave a scratch please!!

Some insurance companies will charge ridiculous fees for sport bikes or wont insure then at all, regardless of your age or record. Try State Farm and All State, they tend to have good prices and are sport bike friendly.

I like the Icon Super Duty 2 pants (seem to be cool, lots of vented panels but the weather here has yet to get “hot”) and any Shift jacket (note they tend to run a bit on the small side) I have the Shift Dyer jacket and love it. Please don’t forget the gloves (your first reaction if you fall is to put your hands out. I really like the skin on my palms) and boots or shoes. I have Icon Field Armor Boots, they are kinda clunky but lots of protection! (check out Shift Fuel Street Shoes if you don’t want to get boots). I also ride with Alpine Stars knee and shin armor, just because you never know.
http://www.newenough.com has great prices and the BEST service and ultra fast shipping
http://www.sandhillspowersports.com has really cheep prices but service and shipping are, well, ok
I have used both companies and I really like NE
Let me know if I can help any more

I got really lucky because I was in the garage and the drop was more of a slow motion let down.
So I totally lucked out. I do have full fairings but those foot pegs seem to have protected everything.

I think the whole point of this web site and your hours of work are to inform people all over the world that motorcycles are as unsafe as you make them. You can decrease the dangers by using the proper gear, ( lots of reviews and advice) training (has anyone counted the number of times the MSF has been mentioned? I have not but, I can assure you it is a lot!!!) and just plain old “Good Desiccation Making” (see Why a 600cc Motorcycle is Not a Good Beginner Bike) Only a fool will try to say motorcycles are as safe as cars, You do good work and their are hundreds, possibly thousands of us, whom are very grateful for you work. We can argue all day about numbers and statistics, so let just suck it up, and use some ‘personal responsibility” (this is some thing in our society that is saddling missing and ignored) and make motorcycles as safe as we can make them.
Ok I will get off the “soap box” now.
