hey just a general question, I’m a new rider (of course) and looking for gear that relatively expensive. Leather jacket, gloves, shoes etc..the problem is, it seems like if I want “quality” im going to be paying $300+ and thats just for the Helmet! Now for my head im willing to fork out that much money b/c i’d like to keep my brain matter off the road. I’m looking Icon helmets, but my question is this… for everything else Gloves, shoes, jackets, does anyone know of a site where I can get quality gear where I wont be spending close to 1k to gear up? Or would it be better to go into a local shop and try to find something reasonable.

    thanks much.

I have a pair of these boots and since they’re not marketed as motorcycle-specific they are far less than the motorcycle boots you’ll find at a bike store. No laces, sturdy sole, cover your ankle, they are great boots for riding!

Oh yeah, also a great website to get gear on is http://www.newenough.com

A guy on here wrote up a review of it and he liked them. I’ve ordered from them as well and I also like them, although I guess technically I should be plugging my sponsor “motorcycle superstore”. They also have good prices, but they are out of stock sometimes which sucks.

    Hey Jade,

I would definitely buy the helmet at a local store, and while you are there I would try on jackets, gloves, pants, boots etc… and just take notes of what brands fit you in what sizes. After that I would go to ebay and buy the brand of jacket you want, but a model that is a year or so old but still brand new. Thats what I did with my Shift Racing jacket, I just got my size, and then found a dealer on ebay selling brand new ones for 150 bucks when they are normally around $300. That should save you some coin.

Your local shop gets my vote. You can see the stuff and try it on and the prices are usually in line with what you find on the internet. If you decide to buy online anyway at least you’ll know what fits you.

Yes local shop as Ben Said you can try it on,, make sur eof the fit, then google it read the reviews- afterall this gear will last you and is what you rely on for safety- sometimes you just have to pony up I suppose too- but along the helmet lines- I got a HJC and had been riding a HSoei, the HJC- on sale at newenough.com and motorcyclesuperstore.com for like 75 bucks had much less wind noise and fit my head better so check around

We had a friend tell us about this dinky little local shop. You pull up outside and he’s got a million heavily used bikes all rusting in the parking lot, and you think ‘oh no’ but his prices on accessories, helmets, jackets, etc are better than any of the shiny big dealerships. I tried on a Joe Rocket jacket there that I would very much like to buy if I get the chance. I guess my point is ask people you know who already ride, they’ll know where the deals are.

I got my gear from all over. I would definitely get your helmet at the local shop just to ensure a good fit, same with the jacket. And the added bonus of supporting small local business is a good thing. My pants and boots came from http://www.sandhillspowersports.com(not so great, I will not be ordering from them again, but they do have the best prices just not so good service) my knee armor, all my wife’s gear, assorted gloves, and some other stuff from newenough.com (They are the best!) So I guess I try to spread the love around a bit .

Look for last years fashions. Ben’s totally right on that. I picked up a really comfortable, fully armored $300 fieldsheer leather for $200 bucks out the door from a local store only because it was “out of fashion”. Man shopping for gear (whether window shopping or actually buying) is like crack cocaine… :-/
