ParticipantYou’re welcome! I hope you feel as wicked cool in your new gear as I do.

ParticipantEvery time I hear the word ‘peripherals’ I think of 40 Year Old Virgin.

ParticipantHey,
I just bought a Joe Rocket Cleo jacket and pants. They are for warm weather riding. The jacket is armoured mesh, with a zip-out waterproof/windproof liner. The pants have armour in the knees and bum (although I have to admit in my female vanity I took out the bum pads) and mesh on the front part of the thighs, so they don’t get to hot. I wore them to the movies last weekend and didn’t overheat. The two pieces zip together at the back for longer rides when you don’t want any wind getting in. I am very happy with my purchase and they are very comfortable to ride in. My bike shop had a deal on the two pieces together; i paid $350 CDn for both.Edited to say: as for helmets you HAVE to go try on different brands. You would be amazed at how differently they all fit.

ParticipantYou have rough road ahead of you indeed….
Take a motorcycle safety course (they can provide you with a bike and helmet) and talk to your mom about what you’ve learned in the way of defensive driving. Ask her about the number of injuries she’s seen due to inadequate/inappropriate clothing. Just keep talking. Get bike brochures and stress the ‘beginner’ level of the bikes you’re looking at (no GSX-R brochures!) Just keep talking.
Ben had a great suggestion to someone else to get the person with the doubts to take the safety course with you. I love that idea.ShannonG
ParticipantThe Ninja 250r was redesigned for ’08. Prior to that I think it was pretty dated.

ParticipantLeft eye blindness would interfere in your ability to shoulder check , see oncoming traffic when it was close to you, see cars passing you ( like you need me to tell you that). Are you licensed to drive a car? How do you find it? Your peripherals are compromised in a helmet anyway so maybe you would find your impediment is less of a factor on a motorcycle.

ParticipantShake your head and make ‘tsk tsk’ noises every time a motorcyclist passes you in your car!

ParticipantUp here if I BYOB (bring my own bike) it’s $700. Thank you no, I’ll have my supervisor ( a friend who is quite possibly the best rider I have ever seen) teach me. He even owns his own cones!
ShannonG
ParticipantHI!
ShannonG
ParticipantI imagine if you don’t have a supervisor you would have no choice but to sign up for the course. I think (may be wrong here, but I’m about 90% sure) that because I already hold a class 5 (car driver’s license) there is no graduated licensing for me and once I pass my road test I am a full class 6 (motorcycle license.) If I didn’t hold the class 5 already it would be provisional for I thnk two years.

ParticipantI think you could make the argument that there is a high ‘jackass’ factor in motorcycling. Statistically, yes, it’s more dangerous than operating a car but statistically people do more stupid things and drive more aggressively on a bike. If you were NOT one of those people, and you rode defensively and with little to no ‘jackass’ factor there’s no reason why a motorcycle can’t be a safe thing to own.

ParticipantI think I was looking at my instruments to see if i was in neutral!

ParticipantI think the blue is butt ugly, IMHO.
