Less then some dirt bikes but somewhat noticeable…. remember single piston…theres nothing there to oppose the action as with the twins.

The Buell Blast is what my MSF bike was.

“Or you can park the bike forward and use the kickstand as a pivot and rotate the bike on the kickstand which i wouldn’t recommend, but people do it.”

What!? ….seriously… I would have to see that… and contain my need for a stiff breeze to come by at a perfect moment just for my sheer comic relief. Ofcourse then I would go help and pick it up. But a pivot …on a kickstand…. not my vulcan…. not without previously uttering the words “You won’t like me when I am angry”

Try something like a Buell Blast ( can’t believe I said that). They are 500cc single piston pumpers with a crotch rocket styling and “standard” seating position (assuming I am understanding the whole categorizing of positions) Solves both the forward leaning and tooo much bike problems.

Started back in August when my Vulcan 500 arrived…. 1200+ miles ago and continuously rolling. I have a 74 mile round trip commute to work and back 5 days a week. I cruise from time to time into town to pick up munchies on my days off. I have gotten alot of experience in all sorts of situations and am definitely a beginner. Knock on wood she has not laid down. I have ridden in the rain, the drive to work is mostly interstate, ventured downtown a couple of times..once while it was raining, ride down a dirt road everyday to get to the main road, already had to do a semi quick stop from 70 mph to avoid a dumb kid in a daddy bought mustang trying to clear 4 lanes. Hmmm….. as the list grows… I’ll edit.
Oh yea passed MSF on the 14th of this month.

GPS units… what!? .. lol man what happened to good ol fashioned maps for pre trip and knowing where your going… or caring not about where your going to find new places… geez I guess I am from an older school of thought. My list stopped at safety gear. You have the idiots on the road to worry about… not whether Garmin says to turn here or there.

Thats the way it works here in NC…. have Permit will license with waiver. If not you will still have to pass written, eye exam and signs.

I would say it would depend on your current skill. If you’ve never ridden…. wait til you can hit it fresh off. If you got some experience may be ok but still a long time to forget what it was you took it for.

They drill into you in MSF (or atleast mine) and in the licensing tests to do a head check. Not sure why you wouldn’t before lane changes anyway, may as well play Russian roulette. On a bike is not the time to get lazy for the sheer convenience of not turning your head.

I would have to say for me its when I do one of two things….. 1st) Stop scanning for deer off to the side for quick maneuvers, at this point my brain is more focused on getting to the destination not so much on getting there safely or 2) I can fully remember ALL the lyrics to my favorite song.
The last one will let you know you are no longer concentrating on the ride but completely elsewhere in thought.

Yes it is against conventional wisdom that you took a huge plunge on such a powerful bike. However at the age you are I am sure you are well aware of all the risks and consequences. Though I would have not tried it nor encourage anyone else to do what you have, mainly cause alot of us are not as fortunate as you seem to be with a semi private riding coach. If you were say 30 years younger give or take 5 years… I would ask about your locale and pray I didn’t read further about you in the paper.
Let us know how your adventures take and by all means stay safe!

Adjust the mirrors to where you can barely see the outer edge of your arm…. need to see behind ya… get your arm outta the way and slightly adjust your positioning in the lane. If your stopped at an intersection… just assume there is someone there.
