ParticipantSmall tip: I know Kawi’s are famous for the no dipstick/sight glass and usually in a place where you can’t see it. Oh yea and the bike has to be up right. If you don’t have a center stand or a buddy available (my 900 is this way, cruisers as I know of them have no center stand and my nearest neighbor is 5+acres across field from me) you can buy a simple telescoping mirror from any car parts store.

ParticipantGlad you had a good second go of it. $25 for the program is definitely good. I took it through HD and though your instructor is partially right about the show room thing he is wrong about the 5 days. We took 3… D1 book, and the showroom walk (can’t blame a company for trying to use an excellent training course as an opportunity to build customer base) D2 Intro to the riding, duck walks, slow crawls slowly moving into the other parts gradually hitting all the things in the MSF booklet. D3, quick review and 30 min warm up to get back to feeling the bike…then TEST!.
Definitely more expensive though HD here locally was near $300 for the Riders Edge course. The local Community College offers it for half that… but the waiting list and the huge “classroom” size is the trade off. Best $300 I spent!Munch
ParticipantCongrats. The maintenance schedule will be in your MoM (manu owner manual). As far as daily checks…. signals, tires, cables, hydraulic fluid, visual leak look… general walk through that they teach you in class. A lot of things also depends on the person and the ride. You are entering into a very diverse community where some only get to ride for short months… week end warriors… or some that ride full year round. So it really is going to depend on what your riding times are. Get your MoM or a copy of it, or better yet call a local dealer.

Participantsame as the above…only one side effect…. I ride so much that once I do have to drive my cage…I find myself trying to sit in the middle of the lane….which puts my right tires at or on the line…lol……. oh well….once the kids head to college…no more worries on that one.

ParticipantApparently you haven’t heard of whats going on in LA. Seems that according to the grapevine, LA gangs have an open season orders on bikers, more specifically if you look like you belong to a MC. So if you do ride through there… just note …no poser gear.

Participantsounds like a partially clogged main fuel line. Once the fuel gets low in the tank and you switch to reserve the valve switches it to another line to pull from a different side/cavity of the tank..the reserve. Not all bikes are designed this way but I have heard of this on another forum. Putting it in the reserve switch allows the clear line to draw fuel up and the overflow from the regular tank flows over in continuous feed to the reserve side.
I am not 100% sure on this as I am not a bike mechanic but redin in other forums around the net, it seems to be a common issue and solution, IF your bike is designed this way.Munch
ParticipantDefinitely cager A/C’s , I actually learn to use them as a means of cooling down a touch when riding in the summer. Find the first soccer mom mini van and just follow it for a short. Your about guaranteed to get a sprinkling and it will be enough to cool your face down. Then bug out.

ParticipantPersonally for me…any city. However I am an ol country boy. Nashville is plagued by the same problems as Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, Raleigh, Atlanta, LA… etc. There is too much of a mixture in culture and road manners. I-95 is a perfect example. Most drivers will hover around 10+ the speed limit..then you get blazed by from a car and I can guarantee you it has one of a few license plates on it, Jersey, Florida, or NY. Here in NC I hear all the time how us country bumkins can’t drive in the snow , yet it’s the northern car thats in the ditch. Most transplants assume the winters here are the same as up there. We get some snow..a lot of ice on top of the snow, apparently not the same up there. Also another thing against a beginner in the city is, there’s more to look at then YOU. Billboards, the hottie beside them, the self proclaimed hottie they see in the shop window that’s their reflection, signs, lights, you name it. Theres a site thats been linked on BBM that even though I absolutely hate the fact it found its way here show some pretty graphic accidents involving motorcycles, if you notice very few of those are outside city limits.
If you can get your bike and find the most relaxed route to the country side and get your practice there.Munch

ParticipantWelcome…….”germane” huh…you need to get outta that 3 piece a lil more often. Last time I heard someone use that was watching the crack heads in the house “debate” amendments to the so called budget bill.
I will look some Dealers up for ya tonight when I get home from work… however you might want to put this lil intro in the “introduce yourself” section. You will get more eyes looking at it. -
