Participantfrom norcal, welcome! before you put the blinders on, go sit on some 250cc bikes. and look at the msf course for initial training. You’ll want to look at the BRC (basic rider’s course) in particular.

Participantit is actually neither. i’m just trying to get you to think about the things you’re saying more. While i do tend to joke quite a bit, that wasn’t my intention there.

Participantmegaspaz – Hmmm .. what are you saying? I get an adrenalin rush going 160+ mph on the German speed limit free highway. I get a rush dodging trees and mougles on my snowboard on double black diamond runs. Cruising around safely does not really do the adrenalin for me and I think thats a good thing.
what do you think i’m saying? and what do you think cruising around safely means? think about it and let me know what you come up with.

ParticipantRemember, blowing right hand turns usually means you possibly going 1 on 1 with an oncoming vehicle. Take all turns at your comfort level.

ParticipantIf the only way you can get an adrenaline rush is from getting the shit scared out of you, you’re doing it wrong.

Participantum… i know you’re worried about getting ass packed, but if you’re having trouble doing the corner properly, it means you’re going too fast, flow of traffic not withstanding. You do not let a tailgating car dictate how you take a turn. Ideally, if the other vehicle’s been tailgating you before the turn for a while, you’d pull over and let him on through. Or do your turn at your own pace and let the tailgater by when safe. Take uphills slower. you can’t see above the hill. you have no idea what awaits you above the hill.
On the question of downshifting, unless you have a slipper clutch, downshift one gear at a time rev matching each down shift. Sounds like you were upright though, downshifting a couple gears is no big deal. yeah, the engine braking is pretty jarring (i actually like the feel). if you were starting to lean or leaning in a turn when you did that, i can tell you the rear wheel slippage will pucker your ass tighter than what you experienced.

Participantbug’s will get into your helmet any which way they can. I’ve had them come in from the top vents, the back vents, and under the chin. I’ve had a yellow jacket get into my leather jacket and into my undersuit and sting me a few times before i smooshed his ass against the gas tank. and take my word for it, you don’t want to get stung by a bee or anything else with a stinger in your head area.

Participantwelcome to the forums!
i have no idea on gulf riding since i’ve never been there or what the market’s like. if all they have are 600+cc bikes, look for a twin engine kind of bike. twin engine bikes are known for usable low power band and linear power distribution. Harder to 12 o’clock this kind of bike due to goosing the throttle. being a typical ‘merkin, my only images of the roads in your area is either straight highways or off road. perhaps a dual sport bike of some kind or a motard would be a good bike to look at.
Edit: i’ve never ridden a motard or a dual sport and i’m pretty sure they aren’t twin engines, so you’ll need to be careful with the throttle.
