ParticipantWell, as long as you live under your parent’s roof, it’s their rules. You can try to break ’em and see what happens… it’s up to you. Talking to your parents is the only thing you can really do. Bring it up every now and then. Don’t know what else to tell ya. G’luck.

Participantwelcome!
insurance cost on a ninja 250 is one of the nice things about having that for a first bike. I still think $3999 used for a ninja 250 is way overpriced. Heck, technically, i think what the dealers were selling the new ninja 250s were pretty overpriced. Look for an older used ninja 250. You should be able to find one for around 2k or less.

ParticipantThat’s funny… I’ve known and ridden with quite a few people that rode their ninja 250s 75+MPH easily on the highway. I think you’re reality distortion field needs recalibration.

Participantchicken ‘n egg problem… ya gotta ride with people to know how they ride. We get around the msf thing too by breaking up into groups; A, B, C. where A being most experienced/fastest, B middle experience/speed, C noob. And we stop and wait at all major intersections on the route. i’m usually on bigger group rides like around 20+ riders.

ParticipantAsk a lot of questions. Things to wonder about…
1. What’s the route?
2. What are the tricky points in the route?
3. How many miles is the route?
4. What are planned stops and break points in the route. ie. picture points, gas stops, rest breaks, potty breaks, etc.?
5. What’s the pace?
6. Will there be breaking up into groups based on experience?
7. How many people in a group?
8. Will there be leads and sweeps?
9. Who is the lead and sweep of your group?
10. What’s the procedure if there’s an accident? If you’re behind the accident or you are the accident. Some things you should be in the habit of bringing:
bottled water – keep yourself hydrated.
snacks – keep yourself fueled.
sun screen – if it’s sunny.
extra clothes – for changes in the weather
tire patch kit – got a flat? nuff said.
small first aid kit.
cash – for those unexpected situations.
a camera – it’s a group ride. you’ll meet new people, make new friends and riding partners. ride your own pace and have fun.—

ParticipantI use tech spec grips on my tanks. The 848’s actually quite hard to get a good grip on the tank. I only get part of the bottom of the grip on my tank and just end up hugging the frame underneath it. But generally, most people go with stompgrip or techspec for tank grips. anyway, yeh it’s possible that you’re knees will play a part in hugging the tank and i’d recommend using them. Works like a charm on my SV, and somewhat adequately on the 848. Never sat on the monster so I can’t say for sure if it’ll work for you.

ParticipantJust get a can of Plexus and forgoe the washing with soap and water bit. Not sure if it works on chrome, but works fine on the swingarms, cans, and exhaust pipes on my bikes. Apply to cloth first and then wipe cloth over metal bits – direct application on plastics. YMMV.

Participantbasically for sports bikes, it’s basically what you said. Hug the tank with your legs and use your abs and lower back muscles to support your upper body. keeping weight off your arms and hands has a variety of bonuses. Like minimizing inadvertant steering inputs from road conditions and keeping your arms and hands from getting sore. also on a sports bike if you want to get a little lazy, you should be able to comfortable rest your chest/abdomen on the tank to relieve pressure on your arms. Sometimes you can’t but help but put some weight on the bars like shifting body position side to side. The object’s not to put more weight on the bars than necessary.

Participantnah. it’s a v-twin bike. on the tame end of a 600+cc bike. linear power delivery, and a wide useable power band. I can’t tell you anything about reliability of the gv650 though since it’s a completely new redesign of the sv650. there probably won’t be any aftermarket parts for it due to the changes. In general though, the sv650’s are known to be reliable.
