ParticipantSome people may never feel the need to “upgrade.” The Ninja 250 has a pretty religious following that loves riding the bike and thinks it is the most fun bike on the market. I think most people who do get larger bikes tend to get what is the most comfortable for them and not necessarily a certain engine size, unless, of course, they are succumbing to peer pressure.

ParticipantThe rear suspension is adjustable on the new Ninja. You could probably dial it up to the stiffest setting and be good.

ParticipantI wish I was in Cali, had about $5k, and could talk the wife into getting a new bike so soon after the last.
Someone is going to be happy.

Participantjust use WD-40 to clean and lube. you will be cleaning less often than you lube. Do a search on yamahafz1oa.com. They have a thread going back 5 years on the subject. A lot of their older members have used nothing but WD-40 for years with no detriment. My owners manual just recomends lubing with machine oil.

ParticipantI think you should move up. But wait a few months so I can afford to buy yours. hahaha.
It depends on how happy you are with the 250.“I am the best I am at what I do, and what I do ain’t nice.”-Wolverine

ParticipantI personally think that you are over thinking this. As long as you don’t get on a bike that is going to rip off out from under you, it shouldn’t be a problem. Just remember to keep your feet on the pegs and not stick them out while turning. If you take the MSF beginner course, you will be eased into it and the transition will seem like nothing.

ParticipantI wonder if there is any armor I could add to the the boots. Off to the internet, wait, I am here already, off to google.

ParticipantI had some experience on minibikes and dirt bikes in my past. The beginner course used the night hawk 250, which seemed almost like a dirt bike in look and feel (at least to the early 80’s dirt bike I grew up on). My current motorcycle is a Ninja 250, and although they handle differently, if you can ride one you can ride them both. That being said, the ex250 has an upright seating position and most 600-650 sportbikes are going to be more forward. You could try the Ninja 500 it is a little bigger than the 250 and has a fairly upright position. Megaspaz can tell you about the sv650 (he currently owns one).

Participanttake the beginner course through the MSF. You will get very comfortable on a bike there, and if you lay the bike down it is theirs not yours.

ParticipantLike anything in life, gear is a calculated risk. You probably won’t have people standing there telling you to put it on every time you go out. On the contrary, you will have people tell you that you don’t need all that stuff or ask you if you plan on crashing. It will be up to you every day to put that stuff on and lug it around when you get where you are going. The pants, for me, are the biggest pain. I hate wearing them, but I do. I will probably buy a different pair to use for next summer and the ones I have are going to be fine in the cooler months, but, right now, I hate putting them on. I have road rash before from bicycles and I don’t want to experience that on a larger scale and that keeps me putting my pants on.
Personally, if I am only going to the grocery store, I am usually in flip flops, a corona tank and shorts. I forgo the helmet because there aren’t usually cops between my house and the store, and the corona tank will protect me enough anyways. J/K, ATGATT!

ParticipantReally, I have never been around racing or a track with bikes on it and had no idea. I assumed the safety wires and full leathers are for a rare case, and that it isn’t a common happening, but that it happens often enough? All I knew was that in the things I had read about buying a used bike, it stated to look out for the safety wired bikes as probably being abused.

ParticipantI loved the line where he said he could see the safety line which let him know that the CBR guy knew how to ride and knew how to fall. I just thought that line was a little ironic.

ParticipantAs a former English major and current holder of a BA in English, I would suggest changing your major and pursuing literature in your free time. I would suggest a Engineering degree or something with a certification.
