    Not sure in your area. Here you needed at least a permit to take the MSF. Then and it varies by state wether or not the completing certificate allows you to by pass the driven part of the test to get your endorsement. The certificate you get really is nothing more then a pat on the back . Unless your state recognizes it as an exemption.

    To better prepare yourself, with gear changes a simple trick is to listen to the click. From neutral when you push down you should here a click. This will eliminate the need of second guessing. Don’t be shy about pushing down on the shifter, your not going to break it and it will only go so far. Once you bottom out….you know it’s there.
    The throttle is a very common beginner thing. I was even guilty of it.For me I spent so much time focusing and trying not to over rev or under rev it that my hand, wrist and forearm would basically become rigid to the point that any movement even with steering would make the throttle move. Convince yourself to relax. If you have driven a manual shift car before you know you can remind yourself that you can give more throttle then you let out clutch and there’s no adverse effects. Sit at home and practice the claw. Stress balls are great for when you don’t have a bike to do it with. Hold you hand in front of you as you were using a clutch and slowly let out with a 5 Mississippi count. Do the same squeezing back in. This will help your muscles remember slow fluid motions. The rock back and forth they likely did at the beginning of the riding portion will re enforce this.
    2nd to 3rd and down again is the same as first. Listen for the click. It really is that simple. Listen for a click and slowly let out of the clutch…. if it doesn’t move pull clutch in and try once more…if it drags or boggs down…do the same only press down on the shifter.
    Cornering is nothing but a mind game. I was lucky as I used to ride bulls and we learned early on that the only thing different about direction is being “used” to leaning that way. There’s no mystery to it.
    Anytime you think you get over whelmed stop and make it simple. Don’t let your mind run off with you.
    Simple question you can ask yourself….”how do you get an elephant into a refigerator?” ……after many odd answers the most simple is the only answer….you open the door and put it in. :)

    detailed billing is a must, that away you know what you’re paying for. Ask any and all kinds of questions, maintenance intervals, known issues of that model such as TSB’s and recalls.

    First…the V500 Don’t worry much about it really being too much. The power that you will need will definitely be there, but it’s not in an overly jerky fashion. It has a smooth run through out the gears and only will fly if you know how to get into the throttle and hang on. At 6′ the Rebel may feel a bit cramped but I imagine with the following that lil’ bike has there’s all kinds of mods that could make it fit. The V500 could be the same. A little bit bigger and longer then the rebel but not by leaps and bounds. I am 5’10” and fit fine on the one I had.
    I have only seen one eliminator and if I remember, it’s a pretty little bike. The hyosung will have to depend on if you have a dealer in your area. Here we have none. That so called unlimited mileage warranty is only as good as the access to utilize it.

    +1 for both the above , however don’t let it from keeping from personalizing your ride.
    A great source of info I have found for my 900 is http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum
    There are some very knowledgeable peeps on there and alot of write ups from riders that have been down that road.
    Check it out you might just find exactly all the answers you need. If not post it on there and I can bet it would take less then a couple of hours before you get a hand full of responses.

    With the V500 I just used the Liquid wrench brand. There again I also gave it a shot or two every week end.
    Luckily the V900 is belt driven, so , problem solved.

    They almost always hold their value well as their is always someone wanting to learn. Last year and even the year before was somewhat of an oddity as some used ninja’s were being sold at a profit above what the purchaser paid due to the demand and gas prices. Now that things are calming down a bit it should start gravitating back to a normal gap.

    more of a fitment thing. The V500 is plenty powerful for you as Elwood stated. However as a beginner friendly bike it can be quite compact. I am 5’10’ 180 lbs. It fit me comfortably but with longer legs you would likely need to look into forward controls to get you the leg room. The V Star 650 and Honda 750’s are a bit longer of a bike giving you a bit more leg room and not to much of a jump in performance to make it scary.
    As with any bike though respect the ride your on and be honest with yourself and you skills or lack there of. Get lots of practice time in and learn your bike.

    ouch …glad your safe, glad my ride home is 98% highway. The more I see of lay downs there seems to be the highest percentage of those in city/urban settings. I don’t like messing with them anyway. Things like this just bolster my dislike.

    Safer by comparison would be a true full face. Less parts to fail in a time of need. The modular (flip ups) claim to have the same safety offerings but from all the things I have read the jury is still out on that one. The biggest advantage to modular helmets is that at a stop light you can flip the whole front of the helmet for more air to keep from suffocating and talk with your buddy without having to hollar over the jaw piece.

    good deal. I live about 3 hours east of there. Don’t think I will venture the dragon though. Seen to many reports on squids no matter the type of bike and also the 18 wheelers that try to make it a short cut. Glad you came back safe and had fun!
