Pre-Ride Checks: Ensuring Your Motorcycle is Ready to Hit the Road Rubber Side Down

I would have to say mid 90’s is when they started disappearing. About the time urban sprawl got out of control. The car I have now is actually my first auto. I miss the connection that a manual gives. Being a mechanic you actually realize how manuals are still out there. Now with the onset of semi autos and slap shifters it makes manuals obsolete. Let’s face it, the world is getting lazier and to much involved with electronic multi tasking. Besides if you have one hand on the wheel and the other texting…..then how does one shift?

Good point! Another thing could be as simple as them not seeing you wave.

Wow Grats Scottyj….. Lets see…. your about 4k a years riding over me…. and I have about a 3 month shorter riding time… so we’ll call it even! LOL. You done good! The changes I made to the 9 I have are front fairing, drivers back rest, Iso’s, risers and……..debaffled the exhaust….oh yea and the scootworks front pulley. Think I am done for now with the exception that for my riding style the Metzeler in the rear is disappointing me. Its wearing as fast as the Dunflop but giving up traction in the wet and new paved earlier. I think I am going to go darkside with it.

Sounds like an interesting theory and idea put into play. If they get it DOT certified for sale here in the states I would be willing to try one. Though of course this is one of those times where you don’t want to see if their claims are true to what they say.

2 ways to find that out. 1st is the direct and not so cost effective approach, but it and try it. Second…. call the manufacturer directly and see if they have an application specific model or find a CBR board and see if anyone there has tried it.

With the windshield and fairing kit I have on my Vulcan 900 if you were to call memphis shades they will tell you that this kit is not designed to fit my specific bike model. Fortunately someone more financially sable then I had tried it out and it worked.

LOL….. I been there . The first year I started riding I was kind of goofy on the whole wave thing. Now days…. if I see ya, you get the wave.

I have a couple of the super scoots near me. The 500cc models that easily do highway. To be honest it a wild thing to see someone riding them at 75+ mph. Just way to use to seeing them at 35-40 and confined to city streets. Heck there is even a gentleman near my job that has complete fun with it. One day you will see him in full blown stereotyped cruiser apparel…we’re talking chrome darth vader style helmet complete with a spike a the top, leather jacket with all kinds of patches on them and “bike boots” …oooh and even has the chain wallet. The next day….. the man will be pimpin’ the full on “power ranger” style sport bike look. It hilarious. He does it just for that reason to . He will tell ya if you take the time to ask. Says that he knows people stare at him, usually in disgust since he has to go slower then everyone so he goofs it up to lighten their mood. It works for the most part.

Eddie……the V500 of yours does 80 easily…. thankfully it seems you have not laid into her yet. Mine in some situations easily got up to triple digits and held it. Granted not much above as it was unnecessary. However don’t give up on the bike, she has a lot more spunk then you think!

As far as the vents on the helmet goes it sounds like it was doing its job. The idea is not to circulate the air around to your face or throughout the helmet so much as it is designed to remove the hot air out of the helmet. Intake vents in the front exhaust vent(s) in the back. To get air on your face…. slightly lift the visor.

How many articles were copy and pasted with this one? Or even if it is your own the thoughts and statement s seem to wonder both sides of the fence as if the author can’t seem to make up his/her mind up.

Scooters are definitely cool IMO especially the super scoots that are 500+cc’s. I think they are excellent option for those who want to ride and have medical limitations to what they can do to throw a leg over the saddle. Or even IF you didn’t have the coordination to clutch, shift, throttle. Everywhere and and everyone I ride with has a simple mentality. If you can keep up you can ride. No I didn’t miss yet another stone thrown at the HD’ers embedded in there but because I have already spent to much time on your other post not gonna bother here.

…..again you prejudice this to just the “Harley” , “cruiser” types? There are 1%’ers of all types. Not Just HD. Plenty of bike gangs from all walks of life and just as passionate about their ideas as the next. I have a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 and never once have I ever had any problems with any Harley riders. Even some of the hard core folks approach me with more curiosity then loathing.

Areas that are saturated with bike gangs will rarely if ever approach you about your type of bike, unless your antagonizing them in any manner……wether it be your wearing the “cuts” from a rival club or your firing off at the mouth about how much better their wife looks then their bike (tongue in cheek). They don’t want or need the attention. And yes there are always exception to those rules.

A beginner should only really need to be concerned about what identifies a person as MC (motorcycle club) and not an RC (riding club). The first tell tale is the patches on the Jackets…and no not all wear black vess or leather jackets. Some of the Sport Bike MC’s around here have some sweet looking jackets that are of obvious sport riding position styling, but most if not all are easily identifiable by the huge club logo…..with the state and chapter also normally to be found is their rank of position within that club.

Again…. really? Since your keen on drawing up other articles….. I have a sport bike magazine that touches on selling images …guess what other names pops up….Ducati and Triumph. All three companies have come to understand that if you market your product as just a mode of transportation your sales are gonna suck…. Suzuki is a great example. This year they delayed their 2010 line up due to lagging sales and over inflated stock. Where Ducati, Triumph and HD have all kept their losses to a minimum by selling a lifestyle along with good bikes.

My exceptions come into play when a person places an ignorant judgment on a group of people based on stereotyping and, well for the literal definition of ignorant….lack of information. Wether they be Sport Bike riders, Touring riders, Motocross or cruiser types we all are part of the same community and since the majority of the caged population are not keen on looking out for us to avoid us we all ought to be looking out for each other.

Each bike manu has it’s own niche in the “price inflation” market. Wether or not your willing to pay 14 grand for a repli racer or for a chromed out Fat Boy is purely a decision left to the owner. Public opinion be damned. Progress in designs have been improved on all styles of bikes… wether it be a reverse piston design on the latest Sport Bike or the New V4’s that Honda and Aprilla are revisiting or the more rigid frame on the newest Harley Davidson’s…oh yea and they have worked on the motors to. Your money, your decision. We all are on 2 wheels….. get over it and move on.

You really needed to go there? A few changes to some words and the same can be said about any bike company.

    He aint kiddin about that!

The one thing most new cruiser owners with floorboards deal with is that sudden scratch sound when you least expect it. If you hear it don’t panic, brake or suddenly pull up from the turn. Stay committed to your turn and ride it out. Just make a note of how hot you went in and slow down for the next time.
