Participant120 kph, right?
Start off on a 250, take the MSF course, and get some gear and you’ll be golden.

ParticipantThat’s the only reason why i stomp on the gears while i’m braking so i can get into 1st in case that happens. Bear in mind, you really need to be quick enough to brake and stop in a place where you can move quickly. Stopping right in front of the bumper behind the middle of a car isn’t going to do you any good and you’ll just be the filling in a car sandwich, which is why you always need to have an exit strategy.

Participantremovable armor just means you can remove the armor.
Both jackets look like “all” weather jackets. The first one has the ability to remove it’s inner lining. The second one looks like it has an inner lining, but it doesn’t say whether it’s zip out or not. I can’t tell from the pics how breathable they are. Look for a local fieldsheer dealer and ask questions if you’re interested in these jackets. Try them on and determine what size you are and then shop around, or see if the local dealer will match internet prices.

ParticipantI warned him but he said he could handle it thanks to past dirtbike exp.
I call him just as much at fault. He let his over confidence get the better of him. Now how much of that is his father is something unknown. Either way, he still had to make a decision to say yes. And I’m not disagreeing with you either on his dad needing a kick in the nads either.

ParticipantLoud cans work the best…
Srsly, I’ve had no issues riding at night. *shrugs*
I guess it’d be good to point out that using horn is a good thing ™ as well. I’ve used it plenty of times for them homes that are on the side of the street and people backing out of their driveways into the street. Don’t be afraid to use it. If people aren’t paying attention, zoning out, sound works the best to get their attention.

ParticipantWhat bike? My buddie’s 07 ninja250 has a lock mechanism on the rear left side of the bike. My bike has 2 fasteners under the rear seat. Not sure what other makers do.

ParticipantIs the side where the D-ring is closest to the top of the bike? Not sure what facing backwards really means. For my shoei, if I fasten the d-ring side of the helmet to my sv650s helmet fasteners under the seat, the visor points to the rear of the bike.

Participanthrm… what year ninja? My buddy uses the helmet lock on his 2007 ninja and I don’t think it rests on the exhaust pipe… The 2007 and older ninjas having the dual exhaust system that is… How are you locking the helmet position-wise that is? And I guess, you could try to check under the seat if there’s some kind of hook where you can put your helmet rings over.

ParticipantWhile it’s not good to downshift into first @15-20mph, I don’t think it’s the actual getting into 1st gear that locks up the rear wheel. AFAIK, you only lock up the rear wheel if you’re jamming down on the rear brake hard, which I guess is a possibility in an emergency situation. The only real thing I can think of by downshifting to 1st gear (actually down shifting to any lower gear from a higher gear) without blipping the throttle or using a couple of throttle jerks, is instability in the chassis. I’m guessing this instability might’ve caused you to depress the rear brake more. But, I agree you should only get into first as soon as you’re right on the verge of coming to a complete stop.

ParticipantMost quality makers of gear have reflective logos and such on the back/sleeves/collars/tails of their jackets. While I personally go with all black for gear, I suppose any little that makes you think you’re more visible to cagers helps. Personally, either a driver’s going to see you or they aren’t. I think with the myriad of distractions afforded drivers with cell phones, blue tooth, changing cds, changing radio stations, picking up stuff the kids drop, drinking, eating, fuming over work, bills, daycare, etc. colorful gear really doesn’t help much… unless it might be used for picking up <insert preferred gender here>… You’re much better off, looking at your mirrors behind you or turning your head to look behind you at stops and leaving yourself escape plan(s). Lane splitting at stops is a good way to make sure you don’t get rear ended. On the road, do all the S.E.E. stuff they showed you at the MSF and leave your self open space on all sides. If someone’s moving up fast behind you, move to an open space. The list goes on… Anyway, just my opinion.
