I know that a lot of people on this site are waiting a couple months for bikes to get into dealerships because the demand is so high.

It depends on the light. I have a lot of the lights memorized on my normal route. For example, I know that the light that is at amphitheatre and charleston really sucks, so when I come up to it and there are no cars I swing over to the bike lane and hit the pedestrian walk button.

Generally though I just wait 1 or 2 cycles, and I believe after the 3rd cycle you are legally allowed to go. But don’t quote me on that.

Can you click the thing that says T-shirts? You should be able to and it should take you to the store. Let me know.

For a while I was really worried about someone stealing my motorcycle, I had heard stories of thieves just getting 4 big guys and lifting it into a van and driving off in under 30 seconds! I even think there is a video on youtube of some security tape showing a theft like that.

Eventually though I got over it and took more of a Buddhist perspective on the whole thing. Basically i’m just using the bike until it is destroyed, stolen, or I choose to sell it. If the first two happen then my insurance will cover it, and if the latter happens then that means I still get money.

You can get disc locks, big chains, lojack, perimeter alarms, etc… but some people go so crazy trying to keep their bike from being stolen that I wonder if they even enjoy it? The only thing I do is I try to park it in my garage when i’m at home, and somewhere public when I am out like in front of a store. Other than that I don’t bother with disc locks or anything of that nature.

I’ve heard on other message boards of thieves breaking into locked garages, cutting locks off the bikes, and then taking them away in a big truck. Basically if someone really wants to steal your bike there is nothing you can do, but by adding something like a disc lock you can make your bike more unappealing compared to the brand new GSXR parked next to you with no lock on it. :)

Haha I’m always ‘itching’ for a brawl because I practice Jiujitsu, boxing, and Krav Maga so I can’t help but see the usefulness of the armored gloves ;)

Haha, also I play guitar and violin, gotta keep those hands perfect and in shape!

    Hey Jade,

I would definitely buy the helmet at a local store, and while you are there I would try on jackets, gloves, pants, boots etc… and just take notes of what brands fit you in what sizes. After that I would go to ebay and buy the brand of jacket you want, but a model that is a year or so old but still brand new. Thats what I did with my Shift Racing jacket, I just got my size, and then found a dealer on ebay selling brand new ones for 150 bucks when they are normally around $300. That should save you some coin.

Oh yeah, also a great website to get gear on is http://www.newenough.com

A guy on here wrote up a review of it and he liked them. I’ve ordered from them as well and I also like them, although I guess technically I should be plugging my sponsor “motorcycle superstore”. They also have good prices, but they are out of stock sometimes which sucks.

Thats what I thought too! But the other day I checked it while I wasn’t logged in and the forum tab disapeared for me on the menu. :( But it’s fixed now. Man it seems like the site has been super buggy lately!

Sounds like a good plan as long as the driveway is paved :)

They start you off like that in the MSF course too. At first they just have you sit on the bike and slowly let off the clutch until it starts to move forward. You do that 2 or 3 times then they say you can apply a little gas and then you do that 2 or 3 times. Definitely take it slow at first, and don’t forget to wear a helmet and gloves and boots even if you aren’t going very fast. Chances are if you drop it you will catch yourself with your hands, and if you are unlucky the bike might land on your leg (which is where the boots come in). I personally had my first bike (also a gs500) land on my leg and pin me between the pavement and a bush once when I was trying to back up! Not too much fun, I thank god the bike was a light as it was or else I would have been stuck there for hours!

Yes lower revs do translate to better fuel economy, but it’s not always great for the engine. I used to ride my zx6r like that, I would shift at around 6,000-7,000 rpms (with a redline of 15,000) in hopes of getting better gas mileage. I then had a mechanic do a valve adjustment on my bike and when he is looking at the valves he says “Do you use 87 octane?” to which I replied “Nope, I use premium.” He then asks me if I ever open up the throttle and I tell him no and that I shift at 6-7k.

He then proceeds to tell me (and show me) that by not opening the bike up I will collect (and have collected) deposits on my valves. When you shift too early the fuel doesn’t burn long enough or hot enough to get rid of all that gunk in there, so I was actually doing harm to my engine by not cycling it through the revs.

Ever since then and based on my mechanics advice I try and open it up to at least 10k a few times during a ride, this usually happens on the entrance to the freeway. Sometimes I even take it to redline just to make sure I get that ‘extra’ burn ;) plus it makes riding a lot more fun.

With a motorcycle you are already going to be getting a lot better fuel economy than with a car, heck even when I ride my bike hard I still get 42+mpg last time I checked. I’m not saying to redline it all the time, but it is good for the engine if you cycle it through the revs every now and then. ;)

I have heard that the best time to purchase a car is december 30th because the dealerships are willing to make deals to up their numbers before the end of the year. It might be the same for a bike.

I have bought all my motorcycles used and I find that I get the best deals in january (people selling to pay christmas bills) or around the october/november months.

    Welcome to the site Michael!
