WeaponZeroParticipant
The tip about fork oil is especially helpful as most beginner-friendly bikes have non-adjustable suspension and it’s really the only thing you can do to help it at all without upgrading the suspension. And let’s face it, most of us will end up replacing our first bikes before we replace the shocks and upgrade the forks on our beginner bikes
WeaponZeroParticipantFunny that you refer to it as a sports type bike.
The Diavel is Ducati’s first attempt at making a cruiser along the lines of the Harley V-Rod. As far as the fairing in the front and the skinny azz rear as you call them, I’m pretty sure there’s a functional reason for them that engineers haven’t yet been able to get around (if they ever will). Weight displacement, aerodynamics, etc…
WeaponZeroParticipantNo idea what a clear-cut even is.
WeaponZeroParticipantEVERYONE has problems with the u-turn box in the beginning. everyone who’s ever taken the BRC is pretty much in agreement that it’s the hardest skill to master.
this website is run by a guy who explains how to replicate and perform all the MSF exercises and then some. he also used to post on here. not sure if he still swings by or not.
WeaponZeroParticipantPersonally I tend to shy away from everything motorcycle-related in the off-season because it only serves as a teaser. My only contact with the motorcycle world at all is my subscription to Sport Rider and the OCCASIONAL post on svrider.com.
WeaponZeroParticipantAlso, I need to correct my original opening post. It’s not that STG is discontinuing their sale of SHIFT products, but rather that SHIFT is closing their doors. From what I understand, Fox Racing, which is the owner of SHIFT, is discontinuing that line to focus on their off-road line, which is their bread-and-butter. And keeping the SHIFT line going is costing them more money than they’re making off of it.
Probably because they stupidly charge Alpinestars-level pricing for Teknic-level gear.
WeaponZeroParticipantNah, I just tend to shy away from everything motorcycle related in the off season because it only teases me. BTW I finally bought my first one piece. Need to get to my goal weight (another ~25 or so lbs down) to fit into it, but It’s a SHIFT Vertex suit.
WeaponZeroParticipantI used to consistently lube my chain every weekend regardless of how many miles I put on it that week. However, ever since I switched to DuPont teflon chain saver, I’ve been going significantly longer in between.
WeaponZeroParticipanti’ve been using the site a lot less since it started. trying to get back into it but it involves having to use IE rather than firefox which is an extra step and makes it somewhat of a hassle
WeaponZeroParticipantI personally am of the mind that a motorcycle jacket without armor in the key impact areas isn’t a motorcycle jacket.
October 10, 2010 at 9:11 pm in reply to: shift vantage jacket vs. firstgear scout leather jacket #28613WeaponZeroParticipantI’ve done research on both models as I like the idea of a low-key plain black leather jacket that can double as a casual wear jacket in winter when the bike is put away. That being said, I personally feel that SHIFT gear is way overpriced for what you get. It’s not bad, but their pricing puts them on a level where they’re effectively competing with super-high-end brands like RS Taichi and Alpinestars, when they are most certainly NOT at that level. Feature-wise it is a plain black leather jacket.
Firstgear merchandise I have had experience with (though not that exact jacket) and their quality is awesome. The Scout leather jacket has a number of features you won’t find on the SHIFT jacket including superior ventilation and weatherproofing capabilities. The choice to me is clear. But it’s all on you, man.
WeaponZeroParticipantOf the available options presented I’d go with the SV650S due to the large aftermarket and sportiest base performance of the middleweight ones.
If you’ve got some riding experience under your belt also look into the Kawasaki Z1000 or 2011 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 (basically a Z1000 with a fairing).
And then there’s the Triumph Street Triple. Mmmmmm. Juicy.
WeaponZeroParticipantIf you want the absolute most protective waterproof gloves on the market then look into Alpinestars or Knox. If you’re willing to sacrifice waterproofing your options are much wider. But Gauntlet style, dual velcro strapping, and hard knuckle protection are all musts as Rab pointed out. I use the new 2010 Teknic Lightnings which are AWESOME!
WeaponZeroParticipantFrom what I’ve read the Airframe runs mostly true to size. A tad small but not a full size. Order your correct size unless you tend to hover in between sizes then go down a size. The Airframe has gotten excellent reviews based on everything I read, aside from the fact that it can be very noisy with the vents open due to its extremely aggressive ventilation design. But that can be solved by a pair of earplugs.
I can say this much. My size tends to hover in between large and XL with many brands. I’m at the exact point where an XL helmet feels like it fits perfectly when brand new but becomes too big after it “breaks in.” With most brand new helmets an XL fits me absolutely PERFECTLY while a large is uncomfortably tight to the point where it is difficult to breathe and my jaw gets sore. After break-in-however, the XL becomes too big and the large fits perfectly. I tried on an XL size airframe at the store and it fit me perfectly right off the shelf, which to me says it runs about average when it comes to sizing.
WeaponZeroParticipantIt happened the day before my 21st birthday. I had big plans on how I was going to spend my 21st birthday. I didn’t realize until way later that it had happened because I was working a graveyard shift job at the time and sleeping days, so I was already asleep and in bed when it happened. I didn’t find out until I called work that evening to call off (due to it being my 21st birthday and all–no way was I showing up for work) and they told me that they were closed anyway because of what happened so there was no need for me to come in. I was like… What do you mean? Then they told me. I thought they weren’t being serious.
