ParticipantIn NC check local laws. Last I heard there was a move to ban them unless they originally came with the helmet.

ParticipantSaddle up and ride together….. nothing is better then riding with your significant other but yet seperately……. /wink /wink.
Just kidding. Let us know what your travels get ya…. post some pics….. share!

ParticipantHmm…. well as far as walking the bike in case of a dead battery or other non planned event… I can see that very useful. Still not understanding the idea behind walking the bike up hill…backwards. I live on an incline… I pull straight up into the garage….when I leave…. fully saddled on the bike I just back up using the front brake (which is now acting like a back brake) to control the speed while going back. Seems too easy to me rather then to try and man handle my bike up hill backwards. Then again…. it’s me. Again I am on a very different bike to… maybe the difference is between a sports style compared to a cruiser? /shrug.

ParticipantDegreaser will be fine. Just make sure to avoid the chrome as best you can. Most anything electrical is mounted in a way that it’s protected so that when you ride in the ride your bike doesn’t quit mid ride.
For the worst rusted areas..look into local motorcycle communities to see if you can catch wind of swap meets. Or find places such as scootworks.com to see if they have a swap – a – part program where if they have a re chromed piece you can trade your damaged one + a small amount of money for one they have already refurbished.

ParticipantVery nice looking scoot. Reminds me a lot of my Vulcan 500 that I started on. That seat would definitely go at the top of the list for replacing. Check mustang seats, Corbin, and even saddleman, if none of those have something I would then look e-bay. Then last resort find a good upholstery shop that can redo it it. Hard to tell on the phone but I imagine when she’s cleaned and waxed the chrome accents just pop. Might even would look good with some classic white wall tires. Though I would play with a graphics program first to see if you like it before you take that leap.
Take care of her and she’ll take care of you. Glad to see your enjoying her!

ParticipantFind a hosting site like photobucket or the likes and then after uploading it there use the code or link from that location and imbed it in your post.

ParticipantWe gotcha on the whole keeping the community thing going. I would help with the maintenance but its been a very long time since I messed with any kind of coding. Maybe…hopefully some of hour 9 to 5’ers will have experience and willingness to.

ParticipantOil burning and rough idle…. def an engine issue. Unless its a 2 stroke engine….and its not. Being that the bike is low mileage high age… I would say the gaskets and seals are hardened and any pressures applied from operation are just bypassing them. Adding some oil every week. You kidding me? Unless you want this as a project rebuild… I would run away from it.

ParticipantOh boy!!! The ever redundant and over argued theory of loud pipes save lives. Everyone has proof on both sides of the fence on whether they do or don’t. Some contend the noise stays behind, then in the same argument will tell you how it annoys them at stop lights that a bike behind them is over revving. Some will say the louder the better to wake the folks around you up and then also tell you that they have a hard time distinguishing low level noises….. and then there’s the “X amount of decibels will cause hearing loss” crowd that try their best to politely skirt the issue.
Thing is its 6 of one half a dozen of the other. As with any arm chair thinking everyone can think of a scenario to prove their point and in reality…… no ones there with cameras and microphones to catch the spontaneous and potentially tragic event.
As Madjak pointed out…. The best tool you have is in your head. Keep your eyes open and your wits about yourself and all is good. Anything you do to and with your bike only needs to make sense to you . Ride your own ride! Let everyone else ride theres.

ParticipantAhh welcome to problem we have here in my area. No demo’s or test rides known in the area… unless your looking to spend $200+ at the HD dealership in which case your really renting rather then test riding.
Is one of the reasons why I bought both my bikes new. Only risk at that is wether or not it feels just as good moving as it did sitting in the show room. For used…whole new issue. I would ask the seller if they would be willing to split the bill on a check up at a respectable motorcycle repair shop. Or find a friend, or relative that knows enough about bikes to go with you to look. For me if the seller has nothing to hide and is serious about getting rid of the bike they should have no problems with an inspection. Just be careful also what you tell the service center that your taking the bike to and what you expect.
I hate that there seems to be a no test ride rule but I can fully understand the lack of willingness. Especially in the severe increase in sport bike interests and especially from those that do not frequent sites like BBM and are looking to get a bike on the cheap….. whats cheaper then free…. and how hard is it going to be to get away if you are on a bike that can out run most police package cars?
Just do your homework. Ask a lot of question…. some of them twice in between chit chats to see if the responses line up with the previous ones…. look the bike over… in shadow and in the sun. Look at the parts independently…. not as the whole sparkling package. Make them start it up… rev it…. heck get them to ride it for ya even.

ParticipantCheck out scootworks.com or http://www.scootworks.com/shop.cgi/page=partsbars.htm/SID=1280721927.12626 for a quicker shot. All you’ll really need is the diameter of the bar and an idea of shape, pull back…and width …. or simply style that you would like and find someone that makes it. Handle bars for a cruiser is a simplistic task…. unless you ride something like a Kawasaki Meanstreak… that bike had fixed position bar… meaning the hand bar and risers were all one piece. Even then you can get something made or fabricated to make it accept traditional designs.
A lot of bike or cruiser accessories dealers out there…. just run a search .You can probly kill a night with all the options.August 1, 2010 at 9:24 pm in reply to: “Weighting the pegs” does NOT lower your center of gravity! #27872Munch
ParticipantOk…. intermission…. some humor but philosophical interjection….
Do you KNOW what you know…. or do you KNOW what is TAUGHT to you?
Munch
ParticipantDarn….. you couldn’t have waited a month for this one…. I mean ….. Thats when the State Fair is in here…… ah well….. After it quits raining I will try and find a photogenic spot to grab one.
Munch
ParticipantCongrats! Awesome thing when you finally get to ride….and look outside and know that it is your own ride isn’t it. No more looking out your cage on your way to work being jealous of the person on the bike beside ya….
Now…. flip side…. those really gorgeous mornings you ride to work and realize that your destination is not a longer stretch of road…. yea I hope you love your job…. it’s fixing to get knocked down to “like” my job….lol
Oh yea…. and save gas money….your 50 mile round trip to and from work….. yea that’s gonna get doubled and tripled quite a few times.
Munch
ParticipantFor your first questions….. size of group….. whatever your comfortable with. Everyone has their comfort level. Some will state 4 is just right and anything over 2 could be dangerous…. I have seen and been in rides 45+ bikes strong. Just make sure you know the ride rules, signs, destination, alternative routes and the rider in your vicinity. Other then that it is all still up to you. Same with distance. If your not up for the length of the ride of the agreed consensus you can always bow out and go your own way.
As far as the last part…. as far as I am concerned a group is anyone + someone or a slew of others, other then themselves.
