A sales person, who said I should stick with a 500, said that the 650R Ninja has essentially the same engine as the SV650. Is that true?

From your perspective as a new motorcyle rider, it’s basically the same (P-twin vs. V-twin). Mechanically, they are very different with different characteristics. There are advantages and disadvantages to each design. Would you notice these differences? Probably not.

I’m quoting what I’ve read on the internet, so take this with a grain of salt…
P-twins provide higher rpms, higher top speed, supposedly better fuel efficiency, less vibration and are easier to cool.
V-twins provide more torque in the power band and especially in the lower rpm range, lighter than the same displacement P-twin engine, and are more common.

I’ve heard differing opinions on the less vibration part and with liquid cooling, cooling differences are kinda negligible. Not sure on the fuel efficiency either. But either way, if you’re set on a 650, either the sv650 or the ninja 650r will be fine.

I’m not a big fan of any vehicles that are yellow myself. I think they make motorcycles look like bananas… And flames on the bottom? That’s a definate pass for me… But if you like it, go for it. Opinions are like assholes… you know the saying… :-P

Experienced riders on a variety of message boards say when you start scraping pegs, you’re not entering the corner correctly… Either way too hot or not picking the right line. Scraping your parts is like a final warning that you’re skirting on the edge of a low side. It also leaves you vulnerable to anything that might pop out. You have almost no chance of standing the bike up for an emergency stop and if you’re on a decreasing radius turn and your drifting wide into the other lane, you pretty much have no room to lean more which at best means you blow the turn and at worst you loop it. I’ve seen some people that think scraping pegs is cool and it certainly would give you a sphincter-puckering, adrenaline rush, but most I’ve seen don’t think highly of those that consistently scrape parts with shouts of squid thrown in exchanges.

Slight dent and some mirror coating taken off. Kinda hard to take a pic of the visor as well… too much glare…

Awesome! I’ve been looking for back roads to travel upon in Cali since I don’t really know what’s good and what’s not for motorcycles. Thanks. (-:

A center stand would be the best thing, imo. it’ll allow for rear wheel rotation for chain cleaning ( dunno though, mebbe a rear wheel stand will do the same thing) as well as keep the bike balanced on the center. If I can find any positive reviews to the one you just posted on, I might pick that up for myself as well…

I just re-looked at the tinyurl link he posted and it looks like that’s the one with 3 wheels in the back. Looks like there’s one in the middle. kinda fuzzy though.

    He doesn’t get it.

Ouch… And thus seems to be doomed to repeat his error when the situation arises again. Seems like there might’ve been a couple things he did wrong before the braking bit anyways in terms of evaluating the road conditions around him. Has the accident at least convinced him to gear up? I hope so…

Never seen one with 2 wheels in the back. except for maybe some atv like thing. Got a pic and why wouldn’t it be less safe than a trike with 2 wheels in the front?

Well I don’t know about the auto shutoff thing, but you should poke your head and look at the levels when you’re pumping. You don’t want to overfill because when the bike gets hot the gasoline can expand and overflow. On my tank, there’s a fill line which is basically the bottom of the length of the hole where the gas pump goes in.
