Had a few close calls myself today, in the same shopping center. 2 were classic driver turning into the intersection, the other was a lady backing out her suv to my right while i was right behind it waiting to park in the opening stall on my left. Got to use the horn on that one. ^_^

The first one was sort of the scariest as this on the right makes a left across my lane and I didn’t really see him. It was like nothing there and all of a sudden half a car. I was going slow, so emergency braking was easy. Stopped with a good 7 feet to spare. He did see me though as he stopped quick as well and I could see him staring at me while i was braking. He did a sorry wave as I let him go and it was all good. The second guy to pull out was making a left into my direction on my left hand side. He was a dick, I saw him all the way and I was already slowing down, moving more to the right of my lane. He pulls out 1/2 into my lane before seeing me hits the brakes hard. I had already stopped by that time. He then just sat there for 10 seconds looking at me like it was my fault or something. I let him go on his way and I give him the universal sign of “hello, fuck you” when he looks at his rear view mirror. Shit happens, but as long as you have the attitude of everyone’s out to kill you, you should do fine…

Dude… I hope you’re leaving a bit later… 4 major ways to get back to the san jose area were fscked with stop and go. Of course 1 was fubared. So I tried to hit up gilroy 1-fifty-something… that turned stop and go… went back down to 1 for a bit more and tried 1-fifty-something through hollister… stop and go. finally found the back road through capitola park/soquel to ocean and then to 17… accident on 17, stop and go… data-lazy-src=

Awesome! When I do the twisties here, it sure feels like i’m doubling up suggested entry speed signs, but then on the exit i look at the speedo and weep…

    :-P

been thinking about track day myself… a co-worker’s been bugging me like crazy trying to make me feel bad for not going to the track day he’s trying to organize… Don’t wanna sound nosy or nothing, but where you situated at? Are you in b.a., california and if so, you do the usual backroad “tracks”?

saratoga/9 to bear creek road (left) to summit/35 to old summit road (over 17) to old san jose road to 1 (via capitola) seems like an interesting route as well…

    ’bout 118 miles… gmaps estimates about 3 hours… :-D

Or a somewhat more straighter shot, saratoga/9 to 4 corners to 35 (towards summit) to old summit to old san jose road to 1 (via capitola)…

I don’t hear much on rebs. Could’ve been course owned being the issue, but then that’s not a pretty thing to hear as the MSF is supposed to maintain these bikes. Dents and stuff, sure, let them slide, but mechanical stuff, should be working for safety issues at least.

I did about 120 miles today in total. Do you have to make a particular time line? If not, then are you game for a more scenic route? like maybe saratoga/9 through big basin to 1 to monterey? yeh, it’s the weekend, but at 9 am in the morning, traffic should be really light. I think I’m game either way. will need to get gas though. I think you have my number already. ^_^

Whoa there tiger. You should ask away. You should get all the information you can. But you need to think about everything that everyone you ask is going to tell you. There’s been quite a few things in a few posts that show a level of immaturity. Not trying to be harsh, but in your intro, why is a mustang the only good car for you? In this post above, the hoping that someone will endorse your choice on getting a bigger bike, the hoping to show enough proficiency, the hoping that your intended use somehow makes your choice in a bigger bike a better choice. Those are all signs that you’re not quite thinking this through and just hoping for validation on what you want. Age pretty much has nothing to do with it in my book and while it’s good you’re getting all the info you can and willing to listen, it’s more of the processing of the information that worries me. I’m not out to nazi you and tell you not to go for a 650r, but I don’t recommend it for you based on a variety of reasons.

The first part of my post above wasn’t really geared toward you either. It was geared towards the if you’ve taken the msf, then there’s nothing wrong with the 650 that someone else posted. I should’ve been clearer about to which points I was addressing to whom. There’s lots of things that are harder to do on a bigger, more powerful bike like manuevering at really slow speeds. Hell, it’s hard to keep a bike going straight at 3 or less mph, much less turning/uturning a bike at that speed. In heavy traffic, you really might be going that fast, erm… slow! My riding consists of a lot of different scenarios. From negotiating parking lots full of shoppers/cars, to open freeways, stop and go freeway traffic, city streets (like san fran), backroads which may or may not be inhabited by animals, pedestrians, bikers, other motorist and which may be moving at a decent speed or stop and go, construction, weather, etc. You will be doing your fair share of slow speed manuevers which are harder to master on bigger bikes compared to smaller bikes. The techniques are the same, but oh boy are they different feels. I’m not trying to make you feel bad or make you feel stupid, I’m just trying to stack the odds in your favor.

    /me gets off soapbox now

Sorry. i have no opinions on those. I’m at what most apparell designers deem the average height and weight. I would imagine if you don’t fall into this category, most OTR stuff just won’t be perfect for you. Might even have to go with custom fitting. Be careful with multi-season stuff. I’ve tried on a few 3/4 season gear and they all sucked at warm weather riding.

Not a noobie bike. Never has been. If you’re worried about comfort and your weight, look at a ninja 500 instead (or a 650r or sv650 if you have some recent riding experience). Sorry, but you’re being fed bad info by the sales guy and your buddies. supersport != noob_friendly.

geared like crap and neutral was way too difficult to find. Had a real hard time getting it into second. It jammed into neutral a lot of times and finding neutral from first gear was an exercise in futility. Rode the nighthawk the day before and that was a much easier ride.
