This was based strictly on fit as I would have loved to spend less. However, the cheekpads in this helmet are removeable, interchangeable (for size), and accomodate my sunglasses well. I went gloss black, but matte is available as well.

I did make two passes outside the neighborhood on my ride but found tailgaters on both. I plan to be there soon.

I’d never say that a specialized moto boot would not outperform mine. But they were referring to the fact that they had reinforced toes, good support in the ankles, and slip resistant soles. Better than the sneakers and flip flops I’ve seen anyday.

That is strictly my opinion on looks. That being said, Shannon is exactly right. I’ve always heard, first step is to decide what type of riding you want to do. Some may favor sport, some may favor cruiser. All of these bikes are within the “beginner” guidelines. Also, all the magazines and internet sites in the world won’t tell you wether your knees hit the handlebars when you turn. So go sit on a few. And finally, if budget is a concern, maybe get an insurance quote. I found some bikes to have twice the annual insurance premium of others.

I’ve wanted to ride since I took the training wheel off of my bike and finally at 31 have my motorcycle. I’d recommend waiting until after your class to shop. I had a completely different perception after than before. Your also very likely to be riding one of your options during the class.

I took my first ride today and found myself to be comfortable at speed. My concern is the cars that ride my rear fender at speed.

That is one of the few non-cruiser bikes I was looking at, but the 650 version. If you like the 1000 maybe you should look at the 650. It is a dual sport bike that some people use as a sport tourer (at least the one I know that rides it does). Also it is available with ABS. I’m probably not the best for advice on first bikes, being a newbie too, but the V-Strom 650 is based on the SV 650 which comes highly recommended here.

Thi is the only thing I haven’t bought yet. I am using a pair of Wolverine boots. However, my MSF instructors, two motorcycle patrol cops, seemed to think they were fine.

I bought most of my gear at Cycle Gear. My local store employees were very helpful and the helmet exchange policy came in handy. I had almost as much trouble finding a comfortable lid as selecting my bike.

Not exactly Atlanta, but then no one would know where Lilburn is.

I took the Riders edge class through Harley. It was more expensive, but more convenient location. They also provided bikes and helmets, but did spend some of the class time selling their brand.
