I have finally decided on getting a sport bike as my first bike. I still haven’t picked between either the ninja of either 250 or 500 or the Suzuki GS500 though. I don’t want to actually buy the bike until I will be able to ride it though. So I am getting my permit and am going to sign up for the safety course. I also need to gear up though….
So is the motorcycle-superstore a good site online to order from? The prices seemed better then local retailers and other sites I have checked just wondering if anyone had any experience with this site. Also i wanted to know exactly what I would need to get started. I work for the railroad so i have a few pairs of work boots mainly steel toed so i thought i could use one of those unless thats not something that would work. Also we have tinted and non tinted safety glasses and common work gloves. So all that stuff i can get for free at work.
I looked through the helmet topic that was up and I really liked one of the types they were talking about on looks mainly, and it had good reviews.
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/38/12576/ITEM/GMax-GM68-Crusader-Helmet.aspxAlso i know i will need some kind of leather jacket. I really know absolutely nothing about them if someone could recommend anything at all.
Other then the full face helmet and leather jacket is there any other must haves? Like i said I have common gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe work boots that I can use for whatever. Also plenty of blue jeans of course. Are the jeans and gloves gonna work though or should i spring for some leather gloves and pants. Well just wanted some feedback as all i know about anything at all are from reading from a few of these beginner websites.

Using a shoei rf-1000 matte black helmet as well. For boots, you’re looking mainly for ankle protection mainly against twisting. Dainese isn’t exactly cheap though.
For winter gear, I’ve gone with rev-it all season jacket and pants and sidi boots. Also not cheap though…

I tried every helmet they had and it was the one that fit best. From that experience, helmets fit wildly differently based on brand.. so make sure you can try a bunch on.
if you are on a budget, you don’t need to get a leather jacket… textiles are fine… I bought a shift sr1 (leather, but with lots of ventilation). The shift avenger textile jacket seems to be the same style but about 150-200 less…
sr1:

avenger:
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/39/13159/ITEM/Shift-Racing-Avenger-Jacket.aspxi splurged and got some nice alpinestar gloves… I am an engineer so I need my fingers!
these gloves cover my wrists and have a nice palm for gripping the bars… personally, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with gardening glovesI also got alpinestar boots… can’t remember name. They are alright – but my biggest complaint is how long it takes to lace up the boots. Boots with the quick clasps may be more convenient. I can’t find anything in their construction that would make them better than construction boots (as long as the construction boots protect your heel).
jeans = bad… you can take the following with a grain of salt, but my MSF instructor described a test where a bunch of pants were stuffed with sand and sewn shut and then thrown off the back of a truck going 50 mph. It took the jeans 3 feet from impact to start spilling sand whereas cordura was around 170 and leather around 190 feet… and yeah, sand = skin
for pants, I use the icon arc pants… super cheap (like 100 bucks) but protect form road rash and have a bit of armor for the knee…
most importantly, wear the gear!
June 5, 2008 at 12:23 am #7015hbkblue3737ParticipantI will for sure wear the gear since common sense tells you to in the first place and also I wouldn’t shell out that kinda money in all and not use it. Can you recommend that site though. That site and newenough.com are the only two places I know about at all.
June 5, 2008 at 12:31 am #7018megaspazParticipantThey’re a national chain for gear. If you can go to a local shop, go there to try stuff and get your sizes and then shop around for price.

June 5, 2008 at 1:27 am #7023jacksonParticipantI bought most of my gear at Cycle Gear. My local store employees were very helpful and the helmet exchange policy came in handy. I had almost as much trouble finding a comfortable lid as selecting my bike.
June 5, 2008 at 5:09 pm #7064JirikiParticipantnewenough and motorcycle super store are both good sites, but the site doesn’t really matter… they are both big and will deliver your stuff, it is the gear and fit that matters…
June 5, 2008 at 8:55 pm #7072RabParticipantTourmaster makes reasonable gear at inexpensive prices.
http://www.leatherup.com has lots of leather jackets which are reputedly stout and inexpensive (not many with armour though).
Similarly most HJC helmets test as good as the expensive ones. Look for CL-15 on discount for under $100.
You might want to not spend too much until you’re certain that motor cycles are for you. There are many beginner motorcycles for sale with only a hundred miles or so on the clock…
June 16, 2008 at 6:01 am #7385smadaakramParticipanti have a HJC cl-15 and it’s awesome, super comfortable, and i only payed 70 bucks 4 it!!!
