ParticipantI was thinking about getting some chaps as well for colder days.. As for sliding on your butt.. They figure if you go down, most likely it’ll be to one side or the other on a cruiser.. Not so much off the back of your bike.

ParticipantI was looking at the Gladius at the shop a few weeks ago.. Nice looking bike.

ParticipantI think as we get more comfortable on bikes we take less and less precautions.. The fact of the matter is, most gear is meant to protect you in a crash going less than 40mph.. If I lay my bike down on the freeway going 80 then no amount of gear is going to protect me from the car right behind me.
That being said.. Is it safest to always wear a FF helmet and all your gear? Yes. Is there times on a hot summer day when you just want to throw on a skid lid and a vest and go out and enjoy the sun? Yes. (Especially if you’re a cruiser guy like me) When I started I swore I would always wear a FF helmet.. After a year that rule has kinda gone out the window.. My helmet choice now is which will I be more comfortable in on that day.. Warmer days I put on the 1/2 and cooler days I go with the full..
Everyone makes their own judgments as to what is “safe enough” for them.. It’s about finding what works for you and doing your best to stay safe.. Would I recommend that a new rider go with a 1/2 helmet while they’re learning to ride? Never.. But as for someone who has been riding a while and is competent, I say why not. They are after all DOT approved as far as skull protection goes… Yes you run a larger risk of rash and jaw damage but we take a risk every time we get on our bikes.

ParticipantPersonally I would go with red or blue.. The black looks nice but be prepared to clean that sucker often.. Black shows dirt SO much more than any of the other colors.. Personally I agree with Clay though.. I like the red on the Ninjas.. I screams “SEXY!”

ParticipantAre you set on getting a sport bike vs. a cruiser? Cruisers tend to have much shorter seat heights, making it easier for shorter riders.. There’s a few good 250cc cruiser.. The Honda Rebel being the standard.. A great bike and they last forever.. You can usually pick up a used one pretty cheap.. Here’s a good article comparing small cruisers..

ParticipantWas wearing my half helmet and goggles last Sat and took a drive through the mountains.. Hit a bug dead on and when it exploded it covered the full left side of the goggles.. Took me by surprise… I REALLY need to get a windshield for the new bike…
Dagger
ParticipantWell I dunno about the rest of you but I get a lot of ladies telling me how sexy I look on my bike.. Guess it depends on the rider..

ParticipantThey can protect from paint wear but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to remove it and clean under it regularly. And the point made about not being able to see it so who cares if it doesn’t wear down… The purpose is for future resale.

ParticipantIf you’re comfortable on the CBR you might want to check out the GXR 750 which has the ability to change between 500, 650 & 750cc’s I believe. it also has a slips clutch. I personally haven’t looked into it but was told good things about it.

ParticipantWell I think it depends on if you’re talking Sport bike or Cruisers.. The 650 cruisers have nowhere near the same power band as the 650 sport bikes… In addition, the size difference of the 250 cruisers make them hard for taller riders to even ride. I know at 6’1″ my 650 was a tad small for me and I had to add forward control extensions to it to ride it comfortably.

ParticipantIt sounds incredible.. Even with the stock pipes on it.. I seriously feel like I’m riding some kind of tank motorcycle bastard hybrid down the street.. Such a different feel than my 650.. Now when I get on my 650 I feel like I’m riding a Vespa.
Dagger
ParticipantYeah.. I’m planning to get a bat wing and hard cases for it.. Just deciding whether to go Corbin and spend the 5k.. Or go with lesser end stuff and save myself about 4k..

Participant1852cc… Hmmm.. Just a tad out..
