Chaps?

I am thinking about riding pants, because right now I’m just wearing jeans. I have a cruiser style bike so I don’t want to look too sportsbikish so I am leaning towards leather pants or leather chaps, neither of which I am too excited about but – safety first. So basically I think chaps on women are the ugliest thing I have ever seen. Except maybe once or twice I did see a nice pair that looked ok. I like the idea you can take them off if you stop somewhere for breakfast or whatever. I like the looks of just plain old leather pants but I can’t really wear those everyday to work. Well, I could and change but that’s a pain. So it seems like I’m leaning towards chaps, a nice ladies pair not some horrifyingly totally ugly pair if I can find them but I don’t know, what do you think about ladies in chaps?
Also, what happens if you skid on your butt? Do they just figure you have enough padding on your butt that it’s ok if you lose some?

You’ll get abrasion resistence on the legs covered by the chaps, but nothing on the ass unless you wear something abrasion resistence, in which case, chaps would be unnecessary. Plus, they just look stupid… sorry cruiser riders that wear chaps and stuff…

My jacket is textile as well, and matched to the pants, so I don’t look too ridiculous. Well, as non-ridiculous as you can look walking around after you got where you’re going, but still wearing your riding gear.

They have them in plain black also.
June 18, 2009 at 4:09 pm #19901CandiceParticipantYeah, my jacket is textile. What was I thinking? Chaps? Yuk. I am going textile – I just wasn’t sure if cruiser style bikes and textiles went together but now I don’t really see why not, right?
June 18, 2009 at 4:28 pm #19902ranetteParticipantI wear Draggin Jeans. Simply heavy denim reinforced with Kevlar in the knees and butt. Not the best looking jeans in the world, but not the worst. They will protect you from road rash, but are not armored. I ordered them with the optional knee protection but there’s no pocket to install the armor. Instead they give you a few flimsy pieces of velcro that’s supposed to secure the armor. I wear the jeans every time I ride but the armor is still sitting in the box it came in. Should have sent the pads back, but I never did. I’m thinking of getting a set of Bohn armor http://www.amazon.com/Bohn-Bodyguard-Adventure-Pants-Tailbone/dp/B001T4SK2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1245342125&sr=8-1 so I’ll have the protection of both kevlar and full armor yet still be wearing jeans.
June 18, 2009 at 6:34 pm #19906Clay DowlingParticipantI’m not sure they go together either. But I’m not riding as a lifestyle thing. I’m riding because motorcycles are a lot of fun to ride. Road rash and banged up joints aren’t fun, so I wear the gear, keep my bike in order and practice my road skills.
I don’t know if you should count on me as the halmark of biker fashion though. My favorite cloths to wear to work are a blue shirt the color of a Planters’ can with a yellow tie the color of the Planters text. I don’t even have to wear a tie to work (it kind of freaks my boss out), I just really dig bright colors.
June 18, 2009 at 7:31 pm #19914bigguybbrParticipantI’m sorry but i can’t hear chaps and not think about that old John Candy movie “Armed and Dangerous” where Eugene Levy is walking around in ass-less chaps… yeeeeeshhh gives me the willies every time
June 18, 2009 at 7:58 pm #19918briderdtParticipantYeah, that’s the ticket…
June 18, 2009 at 8:16 pm #19921zeppelinfromledParticipantI have a pair of the Kevlar-reinforced jeans, and I have the Bohn armor stuff (the material in mine is kind of like pantyhoes, so it’s supposed to be cooler). The Bohn stuff would definitely offer protection, but I don’t find it comfortable at all. In every single case when I want more protection that the jeans alone, I reach for the textile pants that zip into my jacket. They’re more comfortable and they offer better protection. And since I can’t walk around in the Bohn stuff comfortably, I would have to change clothes anyway to walk around. Just my 2 cents, but I don’t like the Bohn armor. You may feel completely differently though.
June 18, 2009 at 8:53 pm #19924SantaCruzRiderParticipantPersonally, I’m a big fan of the look of women in chaps. But, I have to agree that all their redeeming qualities disappear once you start the bike and they leave way too much exposed to the road.
Good advice on the textile stuff.
June 19, 2009 at 12:01 am #19928MunchParticipantBah….. I wear chaps. Use to them though as I rode in them when I rode bulls. Different kinds of course. I also wear Draggin Jeans underneath. For me textile against leather… I take leather…. Leather pants against chaps… chaps for me… a lot easier to manage when I drink to much mountain dew in the morning and also easy to unzip and throw in the saddle bags when I get to work. I have heard of the “assless” arguments and it always comes down to the risks your willing to take. Thats for any gear you wear.
June 19, 2009 at 12:33 am #19930zeppelinfromledParticipantI’m glad I’m not the only one who drinks Mountain Dew in the morning.
Also, if you’re wearing the Draggin Jeans under the chaps, you’re pretty well protected.
June 19, 2009 at 1:58 am #19931briderdtParticipantNot just for breakfast.
It’s my caffeine of choice any time of day.
June 19, 2009 at 5:10 pm #19939CandiceParticipantThat would be too distracting for all the other drivers, cagers and bikers, I would worry about their safety. That would make me noticeable to cagers though….. White helmet vs chaps and a thong for visibilty…
