Welcome aboard! I’m a newb here too. This is a wonderful site and the folks are very knowledgeable and helpful. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about the two bikes you mentioned here. I’ve researched the V-Star 250 by Yamaha and the Rebel and Nighthawk 250’s by Honda. I decided early on that cruiser/standard was more my style.

CityHunter357ParticipantI’ve looked at the V-Star, the Rebel, the Nighthawk and a couple of others like the Buell Blast. I have to say I really like the V-Star 250, but I’m considering the Buell too. It’ll all come down to price and availability in the end.

CityHunter357ParticipantI’m still trying to find a bike online and I’ve been looking at the Virago for a while now. Glad to hear another positive comment on it. Perhaps my decision is getting closer to being final….

CityHunter357ParticipantOk guys…you got me salivating over that FS-10 from HJC…Very cool!! But I also found at my local bike store a Scorpion EVO-700 that looks pretty similar. HJC’s is DOT only while Scorpions is both DOT and SNELL. Does this matter? I’ve heard your insurance rates can be affected by whether your helmet is DOT only or both DOT/SNELL. Can someone set me straight on this?
Thanks.

CityHunter357ParticipantThanks for the input, guys! I can’t wait for the class now. Went out and got some gloves yesterday, my first gear purchase…Alpinestars all leather gloves with carbon fiber knuckle guards.

CityHunter357ParticipantI guess I won’t know until I start trying them on, but I think I like the looks of that Matte Black HJC FS-10 the best so far.

CityHunter357ParticipantI wear glasses all the time. Does anyone have a recommendation for a helmet that will work with wearing glasses?

CityHunter357ParticipantWelcome MrMoran24. I’m new around here too and I’ve been looking at a lot of 250’s. Personally, I think the Yamaha V-Star 250 (Virago) is the best of that bunch. I might consider starting out on a larger bike, but I think i’m going to wait until I actually take the MSF later this month and see what I’m comfortable on.

CityHunter357ParticipantHope so. I’ll need lots of practice. I just hope the chicks will think my dinky 250 trainer will be kinda cool! J/K

I’ll probably need to shell out a few more sheckles for some basic gear between now and the class, but that’s ok. As far as I’m concerned, there ain’t nothin’ free in life, and education certainly falls into that category. $200 is cheap compared with the alternatives.
