which is the way is SHOULD be Test on what you ride scooter/or Motorcycle..kinda lame to be able to take a Motorcycle test on a scooter..but I know a LOT of states let you do just that.

Yeah, i went down to a couple of the shops today and they DO have a older GS500 coming in(so i assume its gonna be a E) but I think being a dealer its STILL gonna be over my limit to spend..probably closer to 3000 then $2000. And yeah, to be honest id be ok with a Blast..I sat on the new one in the showroom that they tried to sell me for almost $5000…I liked its size..id have liked the higher seat they have the one I sat on had the lower seat. but as far as fit and looks went id take it in a heartbeat if it was say a 2001-2002 in my price range :).

Agreed, Im not desperate or anything..I just did not think it would be this hard to actually find a older bike thats under $2000. I mean I look in my local paper..we have 27 adds for motorcycles..and get this 20 of the 27 are for guys trying to unload $6,000+ Harleys 2 are for bigger bikes(sports) like hyabusas and a 1000cc interceptor or something, 1 is a older 600 Katana, and then 2 older bikes the Suzuki GN 250 and a Yamaha Special 250 that the guy thinks are worth $1500 a piece(book value is under $1000 and thats retail value) I mean..SLIM pickings..then you have stuff like Ebay and cycle Trader all of which DO have some decent deals that are all $600 or over to ship..I mean geesh lol its gonna be like hitting the lottery…and yes as you said its NOT a big deal as I actually have 3 cars if you include the 73 dodge Dart Sport 340 so its not like I need a bike..its just the 55-70 MPG that im looking forward to and spending $20-25 a week in gas instead of $50 :)

I dont know, see my problem is the initial lack of funds to get a bike..its not the point of saving up for one..its the point that I have about $1500 right now to get one and thats about it..thats becasue we have 2 car payments..so when 1 of those goes away in 2-3 years then I would be able to pretty much get anything I wanted. but till then we agreed(wife and I) that we could take $1500 out of savings to get a bike IF I could find one for that much…and thats turning out to be a BIG IF :) . The only thing i can fins so far is either stuff in the 80’s era , maybe a 99 Ninja 250 that im looking at here on Saturday, there is a 93 or 96 Katana for 1300(but I thinks thats just TOO much bike to learn on but the price is right) and thats about it after looking pretty much since..well June.

So it seems like if I get anything to start learning on for this year its gonna be a 80’s model or hopefully that Ninja(if the mechanic im taking along thinks its wroth the $$$) He does work relatively cheap(front fork replace seals=$70 from him) so he would probably do a lot of that kind of work that deals with any internals or things ive never done. I have a old muscle car..I love driving it but HATE wrenching on it :) . I dont mind doing easy stuff but id be working on it in my driveway or under a carport not in a garage ..

so im at a crossroads..as its getting late(in the riding year) and id have loved to got a foot in the door head start now this riding season and start learning get some experience get in the safety class..preferably on the bike id be riding instead of a course bike that may be way different. Its not paramount..but I run into the same deal next year if I have to wait..im still stuck with $1500 and still have to find a decent bike in that price range. Its becoming more apparent thats gonna be real hard to do :) .

I asked my buddy about the PA one..he did everything in reverse..kinda funny but it worked for him..He decided he wanted a bike..went out and got one(Boulevard i guess is the name of the bike?) he had never ridden a bike so he actually had to have it delivered to his house :). got his gear and went out to learn/teach himself to ride. Took a while about 4-5 weeks till he felt good enough to try the test. Took the test and passed..except he forgot to put on his safety goggels/shield and they failed him..he went back 2 weeks later and passed..he said it was relatively easy..said they made him do a figure 8 said it was easy even on the boulevard said he had been practicing in a lot tighter space than they gave him..said the actual space they gave him was a lot bigger.. said they made him stop and go, weave in and out of cones, and then shift up and down once in a straight line and that was about it…he had never ridden before had a medium size cruiser and had taught himself everything to pass the test in about a month and a week give or take..now he is fianlly going to take the safety course :).

I kinda got it down to the Ninja 250 but to be honest mostly because I cant even find a Buell(and we have a harley delaer that sells them 1/2 a mile away) locally used for sale at a decent price….the Harley place right now has 3 250 Ninjas in their place and only 1 brand new Buell Blast..thats it…

good thread, i always wondered how picking up something heavy for later down the road may be acomplished also. A ninja 250 GS 500 would not be a horrible problem…a big cruiser may be.

I guess all the MSF classes are different. When you take it in PA its free, and when you finish it as long as you pass(and almost EVERYONE does) you get your license on the spot….

I agree, thats why I figured id bring along the mechanic guy so he can let me know what he thinks. And yes the Lady is not from or in the area anymore and just does not ride anymore so she did not take the bike with her when she left. She left it in the garage and decided to sell it. When she came back a couple weeks ago she said she could not get it started and that it ran fine b4 she stopped riding/left it in the garage a couple years ago. What im hoping for is that..well pretty much exactly what you said..since the guy im bringing can repair/take down/inspect bikes he should know what(and how much) it should take to get it running again. And then I would subtract that amount from the $1500. Thanks for the reply..I was wondering if id actually get any..ive never bought a bike B4 so I didnt know how to “value” it..i looked it up on Kellys bluebook the low and high and $1500 is close to right for a running inspected example in excellent condition but its not running OR inspected but otherwise good(from her description)…..And unfortunately right now its the ONLY candidate except for a 1988 Suzuki GN 250 locally thats in excellent running condition thats also $1500…and being a 88 I dont know much about it or if it would make a good first/learner bike.

you can get the gear relatively cheap also if you look around. I found a pretty decent site for some gear http://www.leatherup.com/ was good on quite a few prices. Im sure there are others.

I was afraid to ride, still am to be honest not a overwhelming fear but I just know that it IS more dangerous than driving a car becasue you have no roll cage/crash zone around you and the smallest things that would not phase a car like a rut, rock, deer, gravel, etc, etc, etc can cause you serious damage on a bike..but these gas prices are even MORE scary and they have led me to overcome my fears..I know its NOT the reason most people ride/get bikes but for me its just a MPG saver and even a 250 Motorcycle is cooler than a scooter :) but gives you 2X better MPG than a car for running around and back and forth to work.

Great looking bikes, and the thing I like is from what ive read the Hyosung 250 is actually based or i should say uses the bigger bikes frame but just has a smaller engine..I LOVE that fact as then you feel like your not scrunched up into a pint size bike (which almost all 250’s seem to be..they are just not as big as the 600’s 650’s but the people riding them just look so scrunched up on a smaller bike. Thats why I wish the hyosung was a better bike or the other manufacturers would start making a bike “like” the Hyousing thats as big or uses the same frame as their 600/650’s BUT just puts a 250-400 engine in place of the larger engine..that would be my perfect bike..I hate being cramped :)

Sure he can be forced to pay as long as you can convince a judge it happened(they could totally deny that anything happened also) but Parents ARE 100% responsible LEGALLY for their children’s actions as far as damages and stuff like that go. I guess what you need to decide is it worth the animosity/bad blood it could create or is it something you do just on principal so that they know they cant do that…
