Next week im going to look at a Ninja 250 that a Lady locally is selling. Its a 99 model its green and purple(?) dont know if thats “stock” or custom painted…forgot to ask. She said everything worked but that for some reason she cant get it started as its sat for a year or 2. She says it turns over fine and acts like it wants to run and was told it may need new gas or a carb cleaning adjustment. Since ive never ridden a bike before and this would be a first/starter bike(possibly) I have decided to take a guy from work(or see if he can come i should say) to look at it with me. He is a motorcycle mechanic and has a small garage and can inspect and tear them down so he knows what he is doing.
The Lady says other than that its in good shape and everything else works and there is no faring damage or anything like that..she is asking $1500 ObO for the bike…question I have for you guys is whats a 99 Ninja worth and how much should I offer since I will probably have to get it running(i will ask the mechanic how much he thinks..) anything else im missing? Anything else I should do/ask..I would like to get this bike but is it worth $1500 as it sits non running(assuming its easy to get running and nothing else is wrong with it)? If not what should I be offering..what I was thinking was unless she gets it running B4 I get there ask the mechanic guy what he thinks and see if he can possibly even get it running and then deduct what he would charge to get it going and inspect it from the $1500????? and make that my offer? or is this bike just not worth $1500 to begin with…the price guides seem to be all over on that part on a 99…ive seen as low as $850 and as much as $1700(that would be from a dealership) so quite a range in price. I just dont want to low ball her so much that it seems “disrespectful” since I dont know motorcycles..and I cant put a price on it…

Other than that, it’s hard to say. Since it hasn’t been running in 2 years, it’s fair to say this lady doesn’t know much about bikes or didn’t bother to get it looked at, so take whatever she says about the condition of the bike at face value. You probably won’t be able to test ride it, which atm, doesn’t make this bike an attractive candidate…

And yes the Lady is not from or in the area anymore and just does not ride anymore so she did not take the bike with her when she left. She left it in the garage and decided to sell it. When she came back a couple weeks ago she said she could not get it started and that it ran fine b4 she stopped riding/left it in the garage a couple years ago. What im hoping for is that..well pretty much exactly what you said..since the guy im bringing can repair/take down/inspect bikes he should know what(and how much) it should take to get it running again. And then I would subtract that amount from the $1500. Thanks for the reply..I was wondering if id actually get any..ive never bought a bike B4 so I didnt know how to “value” it..i looked it up on Kellys bluebook the low and high and $1500 is close to right for a running inspected example in excellent condition but its not running OR inspected but otherwise good(from her description)…..And unfortunately right now its the ONLY candidate except for a 1988 Suzuki GN 250 locally thats in excellent running condition thats also $1500…and being a 88 I dont know much about it or if it would make a good first/learner bike.

She said she was gonna go charge the battery up and “try” to siphon the old gas out and get new gas in there to try to get it running again. Hope this works out well and its in otherwise good shape..She said other than that(not running) that it was in good shape for the age. Guy from work thats the mechanic is gonna take along his truck just in case I decide its a good deal or a deal can be struck after he looks it over and tells me what it will take to get it on the road again.
