I was gonna say “Alpine Stars is cheep!?!?!?!” If so I wanna know where he is shopping! Hook me up!
As for inexpensive brands give power trip a try. I have one of their jackets and it’s pretty nice all around and not very pricey. HJC makes some dot and snell approved helmets that won’t put too big of a dent in your wallet. I got inexpensive touring boots by Vega at the Americade Rally that only set me back $60 which was a steal…
bigguybbrParticipantI probably would have lightly applied the rear brake just enough to get the indicator light to turn on, judge if the car behind slowed up any, and if so, slow down, the whole time with an escape route in mind. When I want the attention of the driver behind me I tend to tap the breaks a few times, as a flashing light garners more attention than a solid light. I’ll do this even when stopped at an intersection to make sure approaching vehicles see me.
Reasons I wouldn’t have spead up to blow past kids
1. They are kids, and kids are irrational and unpredictable. I don’t approach anything unpredictable with any amount of speed on my bike.
2. They have the least saftey equipment if anyone in the scenario and are therefore the most vulnerable.bigguybbrParticipantRiding cross country without much riding experience is more than a little crazy, and doing that on a Ninja 250, which isn’t known for it’s touring capabilities, probably not the best idea either.
I remember reading this blog about a guy who took a rebel 250 cross country. In parts he talks about the problems associated with it, and even that he had ONLY a year of riding under his belt first. Yes, he did it on a 250, but it was a rebel which at least has a more comfortable seat. Yes I know there are people who love the Ninja seat, but I doubt anyone loves it if they sat on it, all day, every day, for a week straight…
If you do get a bike somehow, and you want to get it from Cali to NY you really want to look at just paying a company to ship it back to you in NY. Driving almost 3000 miles in a car is grueling enough, but doing it on a 250cc sport bike is tremendously more strenuous physically and mentally.
Something else to think about: If you want to get something new, and drive it cross country, you better look up some some service stations along the way. A new bike will have to probably stop for scheduled service appointments at least twice durring your trip if it’s with in it’s first 3000 miles with it’s first appointment at as little as 600 miles. Failure to do so could void the warranty.
I hate to be a nay sayer, but you really aren’t in the most ideal position to get a bike. My advice to you is to wait till you are in your state of residence before getting anything.
Oh almost forgot… music… I personally don’t recommend it as I find it’s distracting to a new rider and reduces your situational awareness. The tendancy is to turn it up loud enough to drown out the wind noise, at which point it’s drowning out everything around you like sirens and screetching tires, and also damaging your hearing in the process.
I do however recommend ear plugs to stave off tinitus. They also are known to help reduce fatigue while riding.
bigguybbrParticipantYou guys seriously end up with water in your boots even with the liner? Well I added a little bit of boot polish to the inner liner (vynal?) and a quick spray of some silicon waterproofer and haven’t had a wet foot yet.
bigguybbrParticipantWelcome! Enjoy the MSF, it’s a hoot and a holler!
bigguybbrParticipantBy the looks of it, that is the HJC CL-SP…
bigguybbrParticipantHa ha I was gonna say the same thing!
He’s to motorcycle saftey what Charlton Heston was to the NRA. So stay away from him you damn dirty apes!
bigguybbrParticipantI do love the Halo band. It’s super reflective and really catches the headlights even a few cars away in traffic since it’s so high up on your body. It’s really a steal for how much visibility it provides. I won’t go out at night without it on.
bigguybbrParticipantGeez all I get from the Boss (A.K.A. The Social Director) is “Hey stupid”
bigguybbrParticipantI’ve had to put my spending on lockdown until after my house is sold and I get into a new one
bigguybbrParticipantI just picked up those boots when I was up at Americade. I never have left them unzipped while riding around. I feel like they would be too loose and would fly off in an accident. Maybe yours are a little different, but mine have a zipper up each side of each boot that I thought was to secure your foot in the boot.
bigguybbrParticipantThis guy realy has some great stuff on his youtube channel. Helped me out a ton in the winter months before I got my bike when I wanted to learn all I could before getting out and riding. Also came in really helpful when I wanted to practice my cone weaves after i tried it the first time and realized I definitly needed more practice.
Anyways, it’s worth setting up a subscription to the chanel. I don’t know about the dvd’s he’s made as I have never seen them, but i’m guessing they are to put little ‘fender bender’ through college.
Kudos man, thanks for the good advice!
bigguybbrParticipantWeird….
So the hazzard lights while traveling might be a state to state thing. Case in point. Lets go back to the magical summer of ’98. I was 18, fresh out of high school, and decided my s10 needed a better stereo. So I got one, and wired it up myself. Well I might have mis-wired the head unit leading to it blowing out the fuse for my tail lights. Well I was pulled over 3 nights in a row (CT is serious about cracking down on tail light offenders) and each time the officers had me put on my hazard lights and was told to keep them on while driving.
bigguybbrParticipantI’m sorry but i can’t hear chaps and not think about that old John Candy movie “Armed and Dangerous” where Eugene Levy is walking around in ass-less chaps… yeeeeeshhh gives me the willies every time
bigguybbrParticipantFriendly huh? Should have thought about that one before hand…
