Did you ever figure out the legality behind this? Or has anyone else for that matter? I’m emotionally invested now and want to know how it ends…

bigguybbrParticipantThe whole scoot-wave thing is just never going to happen with me. At least not for the little ones.
But please, don’t over generalize saying I’m poking fun at smaller displacement real motorcycles (which I never did), I was saying I don’t take the little 49cc scoots seriously. The first serious scooters I ever saw was when I was up in Lake George. Big crazy touring mothers, with drivers who actually belong on the road and have a motorcycle endorsement.
Around these parts the only scooters you see are the craigs list special $500 49cc chinese imports (like Rocketa aka Ghetto-Rockets as we call them around here), and the people riding them aren’t out there with a rider mentality, they are treating them like the toys that they are.
I remember one day riding down the road and I accidentally low waved a fruit-scoot. I immediatly wished I had a flux capacitor, so i could jump on the highway, get upto 88mph, and go back in time to slap myself for the indiscresion.
I absolutly know I’m not the only one out there not waving. We have had other posts in the past about the same subject. I just happen to be the only honest one talking up about it on here (other than Munch, but he’ll wave if waved to).

I never said that but if you read into it then sure. They are. No doubt about it. They are built with the driving purpose of ease of use. Find any scooter you want, and put it against any equivalently priced bike and it will be out performed. It’s the truth.

I don’t remember the “ride around and wave to everything that has a wheel” drill durring the training course. How many points did I lose off my riding exam for not waving? I hope I don’t get pulled over and given a ticket for failing to wave. What whats this… a news flash… Stalin is not in power you say? I live in America? It’s a FREE country you say? I can wave and not wave as I please!?!?!?!Rane – In 10 years, you haven’t learned not to tell a New Englander to be friendly? Stubborness is part of our yankee charm! (ugh I just said yankee, the Sox fan in me just died a little) And yes I know there are scooter forums out there with very devoted fans, and scooter enthusiasts world wide. There are a lot of people who really love them. And at $6,899.00 for a Vespa 250 GTV (same as I payed for my FZ6R or for a brand new Gladius) you would have to be nuts or incredibly dedicated to own one, and I would really really hope it out perfomed a $3790.00 V-Star 250.

For the record, It’s not the same risk when your displacement is so low that you aren’t required to be trained and licensed. I really wasn’t talking about the large 400-600cc touring models.
And is it elitist??? I don’t think so. Did you walk through the halls, back in school, between classes just waving furiously at everyone that passed? I mean they are in school just like you, why the elitist attitude? What if you saw someone, and they were wearing an AC DC t-shirt just like you? Then you would be more likely to say something wouldn’t you, like if you thought Bon Scott was better than Brian Johnson. Why? Because you share a specific passion…
I’m glad you are still so full of wonder that you want to feel the universal acceptance of eveything 2 wheeled, but don’t be suprised, offended, hurt or betrayed when some people don’t.
The deal with scooters for me, I just don’t feel like they are doing what I’m doing. Sure they are similar, but then again so are football and rugby, and most people’s passions for them vary wildly. I personally feel the scooter doesn’t demand the same dedication that taking up the motorcycle does, and in that way I don’t have particularly strong feelings for them one way or another. They are just another face in the crowd.
So the reason I’m waving as a way to convey a sence of camaraderie in a common passion, which while I have a leg thrown over my bike, I don’t feel I share with anyone other than motorcyclists.
bigguybbrParticipantI’m thinking about getting myself this set from Nelson Rigg for my FZ6R. Definitly felt drawn to some luggage after americade and seeing all the bikes rearin’ to go out on the road for long stretches with all their gear packed on. Just remember to balance up your load so you don’t throw the bike off, and make sure you check your weight limitations on the bike depending on your size and the weight of what you are carrying so that you don’t exceed them and take any required actions outlined in your manual.
Also with back packs, i find that ones that have a clasp that goes across the chest helps to take a little strain off of my shoulders durring long rides.

If I wave to scooters, then I have to wave at all scooters, the big Burgman 650’s, the little 49cc chinese ones, to the razor scooters with electric motors, and that would just beget waving to bicycles, roller bladers, women pushing baby buggys…
I’d be nodding to the old lady pushing a shopping cart in the grocery store parking lot, waving to kids with the roller skate wheel in the heel of their shoes until finally I’m driving around waving my hands in the air like I’m on fire and tossing my head around like I’m trying to give myself whiplash.
So I say if wittle scoot-scoots want their wavy wuv they can come down off their 2 wheeled high chairs and get on a motorcycle.
bigguybbrParticipantThey all hang out on the Berlin turnpike at the MCDonalds with all the Honda Civic kids who think the Fast & Furious deserved an Oscar.
The turnpike is a big drag hangout as it is close to Hartford, dead straight, has a 50mph speed limit, has traffic lights every half mile or so to line up at, and is dead smack center in the state off all the major highways.
Incidentally it’s a big police hang out these days too…
bigguybbrParticipantBut here in the magical, tropical paradise that is Conecticut, it’s a fact that you can duck walk your bike through the center of the double u turn blue box , not even making the slightest attempt, and you can still pass your riding test.
Just a few tips that helped me.
For the U turns – over exaggerate your head turns. If you are looking over your shoulder behind you, the bike will follow where you are looking. It makes all the difference in the world.
For the Cone Weave – Just watch the Crash video a few times. It helps a ton. Keep your head up and look where you are going a few cones ahead at least, not where you are. Feather the clutch to keep your speed. My MSF instructor would tell us “There is nothing on the ground that will help you get around these cones, so don’t look down!” And he was right. After a little practice this was my favorite drill. I still have fun throwing my sport bike through the offset cones.
Quick Stop – Again keep your head up, don’t look down at the line. Squeeeeeeeeezzzzeee both brakes and remember to down shift at the same time.
Swerve – I always just though “PUSH – PUSH – GO” Let the bike move under you rather than trying to lean with it and don’t break before.
So if you already have a bike, enter an empty lot and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!! It’s quite a bit of fun after a while, and I do enjoy showing up my friends who have ridden for years that I can school them on the practice course

Part of what makes up the MPG is driving style. It’s all about how you ride that determines how your average mpg will come out. So yeah some people will claim higher or lower numbers for any bike out there. Hard to say what is the absolute best as how and where the bike is driven makes a huge difference.
And for the love of god Brendan, put a shirt on… This is a bike forum, not a nipple contest

Before you worry about what to get, worry about getting into the course and learning how to ride and make sure it’s really something you want to do…
bigguybbrParticipantAt my course location lots of helmets were available to use for free, all you needed was a long sleeve shirt or jacket, footwear that covers your ankles, and a pair of gloves. I’d check with the course requirements where you live.
bigguybbrParticipantThey are related and you’ll have all the skills to get your balance and get the bike moving but I think maneuvering safely on the road is a little different set of skills. Thats why everyone here recommends taking a saftey course geared towards the road. If you are on a military base, you might even be required to take one before you can ride on base (I know Groton Naval Base requires a person to complete a rider saftey class before being allowed to ride on base)
Why not look for an enduro aka dual sport? Then you can have the best of both worlds, on and off road!
I’m still trying to get my hands on a yamaha tw200. It’s a great little enduro with these huge fat tires. The bikes are just pure fun, but aparently no one in CT is willing to part with theirs for a reasonable price
Crash has a drz400 that he described as giggletastic I beleive.
