If I remember correctly, the cone weave of the MSF skills test were 12″ apart, but the State of Michigan MOST skills test were 8″ apart. Sound about right?

I bought 8 disc cones at WalMart the other day. They are cooler than other cones in that if you run them over, you just ride over them, because they are so low.

I’m going to to set up a little cone weave in an empty parking lot in a few. Even though I’m signed up to retake the BRC here in Ohio, I’m thinking about just taking the riding skills test at the BMV just because I’m getting sick of the restrictions on my temp permit. Not to mention having BRC in the bag when I set foot on the range in two months.

Good entertainment, and I like the advice for setting up the impromptu cone weave. Certainly better than using the road dashes at 50mph on a back road, which I would never recommend anybody do.

OK, practiced cone weaves today and emergency braking.

Low speed maneuvering was a mess with me so far. I honestly wonder if I was on the range for two days or not in MSF class, or if it was all a dream.

Emergency braking — 20 feet or a few feet less at 15-20 MPH. I’m not sure if that’s a good number or not. I’m trying not to let myself brake before the cones, because I know that’s a deduction in MSF.

There isn’t much room under the seat of the Baby Ninja, but I got the set of 8 disc cones to fit in a nook near the brake light.

I have my skills test to get my endorsement scheduled for the 25th, and by damn I’m not getting up early when I work third-shift to fail.

Sorry, had to reply to my own post.

Much easier to understand than the MSF diagrams.

I like how they show the parking spaces in their diagrams. Very useful!

captain crash never fails to make entertaining videos :)

that being said, i don’t approve of teaching riders to brake with 4 fingers. maybe if you have a really heavy bike with a single front brake, but anything with two front rotors should be braked with two fingers.

but if you don’t agree, just don’t grab a handful.

I think we’re on the same page–DON’T GRAB! But for modulation I find 4 works better than two. One of the things I’ve noticed in training riders is that 2 fingered riders won’t progressively squeeze and bear down on the lever like they should. Switch them to 4 and they’ll progressively squeeze all the way to the stop.

But that’s with rookies! When I play with stoppies with 2 fingers I find I can’t modulate the brake as well as I can with 4…but I’m getting old too…

Bottomline for me is: do what works for you! And don’t Grab, Stab, or Mash the brakes!

I haven’t had any rear-wheel rising, so I guess I’m doing something right.

I do like the whistle idea. It’s just too weird to have a set of cones mark where you’re supposed to brake. The only time you ever will deal with that on the road is a marked line at an intersection, and there (hopefully) won’t be a need for an emergency stop there.

Those are cool bikes…a lot of fun and really forgiving.

OH MAH GAWD! Capt. Crash is on the forums? Is this legit? Well either way, Crash’s videos make me damn happy. Good to have you around Cap’n…if that is your real name…

DRZ400SM. It’s giggletastic. Just plain fun.

    My real name–

if you ask my brothers it’s “Hey, Stupid”
if you ask my HS students it’s “Sir”
if you ask Mrs. Crash it’s “Sweetie”

I respond to: “Crash” “Capt” “Free Pizza” and “Look out!”

This past Tuesday, I successfully completed the MSF course up here in NY and just a tip from the instructors that helped me with the emergency braking is what they kept reiterating over and over, “Don’t grab a handful of brakes, just… squeeeeezzzzzzzzzzze the brakes (emphasizing on the z’s).” They wanted us to be able to compress the front suspension as safely as possible without locking up the wheels and downshifting to 1st gear from second.
