I have a 2006 Ninja 500 to sellJune 11, 2009 at 8:48 pm #19569zeppelinfromled
ParticipantI don’t know if there are enough of us, but it would be cool to have a little section on the forum for motorcycles and gear for sale. I think a policy of not selling helmets would be good in case they’ve been damaged, but maybe that should just be a personal choice.

I would really just suggest you slap it on craigslist. There is a really active motorcycle for sale page there for our area. You’ll get calls in no time just be sure to have some pictures.

Participant$1.12 per mile depreciation or 50% in 2700 miles
I’ll stick with Triumph and BMW
my 1985 BMW cost $4200 new and is now worth $4500
my 1979 Triumph cost me $1200 new and is now worth $4000-$50002 year old kawasaki; new $5200 now worth $2500?

ParticipantIs not the norm. And the ninja is so common that the market is flooded.
Depreciation is the norm. Only partially based on mileage. Age is as much a factor. You also have a fashion-conscious bike and got caught in a model change.
Just the same, can’t fault buying a BMW bike. If I had the money, and didn’t mind the 70 mile drive, I’d get one in a few years.

ParticipantI’ve gotta agree with Clay here. Your bike, while it is a great bike, is caught in a black hole of depreciation. But all is well if you’re buying BMW’s and Triumphs

Participantis eBay next?
or should I keep it as an end table in the rec room?June 12, 2009 at 8:27 pm #19656Clay Dowling
Participantusually lose value. You just got lucky with the ones you picked up.
What you usually do is you keep it as a slick, sporty ride around town. The only kink is that if you’ve got a BMW to be riding, you probably aren’t that interested in the Ninja.
June 12, 2009 at 8:47 pm #19657drlapo
Participantthe Ninja was my son’s bike and I took it “in trade” when I financed his new bike. I had expected to get rid of it quickly and for a resonable price but that was in 2007
I also had an 06 Ducati 620 monster that went in a matter of weeks with 25% depreciation
I had an 02 Sportser that I paid $6400 for and sold in 2008 for $5200
I was not ready for such rapid depreciation on the Kaw
I’ll keep trying to find a buyerJune 12, 2009 at 9:59 pm #19659SantaCruzRider
ParticipantNot sure why it’s a surprise that a bike depreciates in value in the first few years of it’s life. Same thing happens with almost all cars and half of all marriages.
You biggest depreciation comes the first 5 minutes you roll out of the dealer’s lot. First year is the worst year, followed by the second and then the third — and you get the idea. Depreciation typically flattens after a decade or so, and then at year 20-25, if you can keep it running, you have yourself a Classic and the value starts to rise.
So you’re 34-year-old Beamer is now worth more than you paid — that’s no big surprise. But also keep in mind that the $4,200 you paid in ’85 was worth probably 3 times as much in the current economy. If you’d invested it instead, say in GM stock it would now worth something like, umm, nothing… haha. But you get the idea.

ParticipantOK i’ll take the depreciation hit
