ParticipantDang that bike rules. Although a little bit too much plastic for me still to be a true streetfighter.

ParticipantI am in the process of reviewing the HJC FS-10 (the one that looks like a fighter helmet!) and I want it to fit my head soooooo bad! I am in between sizes it seems in HJC. Great freaking helmet, I just wish my head was shaped differently. Expect the review in a couple days.

ParticipantHmm… I’m not quite sure. Was there a piece missing from your dipstick when you managed to get it out? If so then maybe there is a piece jammed in the gears somewhere.
Is your bike the type of bike that needs to be in a specific gear (like neutral) before it will let you start it? Is the bike even turning over at all when you press the starter? Have you made sure that the kill switch is in the On position?
Thats all of my moto mechanic knowledge. I have a sight glass on my motorcycle to tell my oil level so I have never had to deal with something like this

ParticipantI own and currently ride a 2001 ZX6R which happens to be the same bike as the modern day ZZR600. I can say hands down this is NOT a beginner friendly bike!
I will whole heartedly agree with Matt when he says that the new ninja 250 is a lot more comfortable than the ZZR. I rode my bike down to take some pictures and test ride a friends 250 and that bike feels very spacious. I felt like I had tons of room, unlike my ZZR which feels a little cramped.
If you think that a 250 won’t have enough power to get you around (it does, but for now lets just say it doesn’t) then maybe consider getting a ninja 500 or a gs500. My first bike was a 2002 GS500 and it was a great beginner bike (although in hindsight if I had to do it again I would start on a 250).

ParticipantDid clearing the cache help 123missj?
The funny thing is the exact same thing happened to me about 3 months ago. I was trying to change my avatar image and it kept showing the old image and not the new one. I trouble shot that thing for over an hour until I finally decided to try clearing my cache.
I run this site, but I’m definitely not the best programmer around.

ParticipantLet me temper that advice by saying that I think the IDEAL choice for the most learning would be a 500cc bike of some type for you. With the Duc or the SV you will hopefully learn the lessons a 250 or 500 would teach you, but in my opinion you will learn them slower. I think if you get a 600 I-4 there are some skills that you just simply will not acquire.
Let us know what you decide!

ParticipantWell, having a lot of dirt bike experience is really good, and the fact you have taken the MSF is great. Street bikes are different than dirt bikes, but I know some of the concepts will transfer over.
Honestly the only reason I wouldn’t get the Ducati is because it’s expensive! I dropped my first bike a few times and I’m glad that it was a cheap GS500 with no fairings. But if you are cool with the expense, and you are aware of problems that ducatis sometimes have mechanically (but all bikes have their quirks), then I say go for it.
If you were looking to spend a bit less then I would go with megaspaz’s suggestion and get the SV650. They are everywhere so you won’t have a problem getting parts or advice on how to do basic mechanic stuff. Of course because they are ‘everywhere’ that might be one reason why you don’t want one.
Whichever bike you get, make sure you wear full gear: Jackets, gloves, pants (not jeans), boots, and full face helmet.

ParticipantWelcome aboard. Is that you in your avatar pic? What is that, a Honda f2?

ParticipantThe test I do is I wear the helmet for 30 minutes and then I take it off and look at my head. The helmet should have been snug, but if after I remove it if there are some red spots on my forhead or cheeks etc… that means it is TOO tight. The helmet also shouldn’t cause a headache or anything like that.
When it comes to gear I have heard a saying, “Only cover the skin you don’t want to lose.” When I ride, I usually gear up for speed/temperature that I plan on riding. In an ideal world I would wear full leathers whenever I put a leg over the bike, but I have found that I am too lazy to do that, but I do realize my laziness comes with risks.
I never ride unless I am protected head to toe, but sometimes that level of protection varies. I will NOT ride in regular jeans because I hear they disintegrate on contact with the asphalt ( ) But I will wear some kevlar reinforced riding jeans if I don’t plan on going faster than 45mph. I figure that worst case scenario I fall off at full speed and I’m not able to shave off any speed from braking then the kevlar should be able to protect against some road rash. Although, when I am wearing the jeans I realize that if I do crash then I will most likely get at least a little road rash somewhere on my legs.
Pants are really the only thing I compromise on, everything else is built for full speed crashes. I have 3 different jackets (2 mesh, 1 leather), some textile overpants, and I have either Alpinestars racing boots or Shift Riding Shoes. I feel like I could crash at 65mph – 75mph in any of that gear and survive without much injury or scarring (besides maybe some broken bones).
I really recommend checking out some Shift Riding Jeans, or maybe some Draggin’ Jeans if you plan on wearing something besides textile/leather pants when you ride. They aren’t going to do a lot, but they are definitely better than regular jeans, and loads better than shorts.
When it comes to gear I used to think that having a lot of people that are safety conscious trying to peer pressure new riders into wearing the right stuff was the best way to go about it. Now I realize that if they succumb to peer pressure that easily, then they definitely aren’t going to wear gear because the Majority of riders only wear the bare minimum required by law (in CA that means a helmet). There are a lot more squids out there then safe riders, so you should really just ride your own ride. If you feel like your skin is worth protecting then thats great. If you don’t mind scars or pain or hospital bills then thats also OK. The number one thing to keep in mind though is every rider I know who has been riding at least 3 years has crashed once already (myself included). Some were low speed spills, others were highspeed and caused death or serious injury. Riding a motorcycle is incredibly dangerous, but also a lot of fun. The odds are very high that you will crash at least once if you ride a motorcycle. It could happen on the freeway, in the twisties, or even somewhere mundane like on an errand to the grocery store. I try and dress for the crash first, and dress for the ride second.
Thats my 2 cents.

ParticipantI think that a lot of people think about riding a motorcycle, but it takes a mental push before they make the plunge. Sometimes just seeing and talking to another ‘average’ person who happens to ride shows them that they can do it too. Lots of people who I didn’t think would be interested in riding have come up to me and asked about my bike and my safety gear.
I need to get some BBM business cards so I don’t have to spend 30+ minutes explaining everything haha!
