Is this the same bike beside looks? If so I think the SV650 would be a better bike to start if I drop it there won’t be as much damage right?/

if you’re talking about the sv650 as in the unfaired model, then not only will there be less (no) damaged plastic if you drop the bike, but also the gxr650f weighs considerably more than both the sv650 and sv650s/sv650sf.. about 100lbs more. IIRC, the gxr650 is basically just the katana which, iirc, is an inline 4 which also generally makes it easy to goose the throttle which could result in a bad day for a noob.

I sat on the gsx650f at a dealership. All I can say is holy sh!t is that bike heavy compared to the sv and ninja 650. It is an in-line four. I’ve had my Ninja 650 at almost a 45º angle before and I was able to (with all my might, a good footing and a little prayer) bring her back up. If the same happened with the gsx650f it would have eaten the pavement for sure and if my leg didn’t move in time prolly hurt or break it. Think the gsx wet is around 500lbs.

The gxr650f is a re-make fo the old Katana model. It is heavy, but has a fair amount of power from an inline 4, 650cc engine. The sv650 (naked or partially faired sv650s) is much lighter, has a v-twin 650cc engine with more linear power generation over the rev range, and has a ton of aftermarket parts available. They make decent first street bikes (at the upper end of this class) as well as great track bikes. Is my bias showing?

No, the GSX650F is not a Katana. It replaced the Katana in the Suzuki line-up, but it’s a new and quite different bike.

Yes, it is relatively heavy, but it’s also quite a bit more comfy, planted and smoother than an SV-650 (being an in-line 4).

Would make a great sport tourer at a reasonable price. While it’s not a Gixxer, it’s no slouch either by all accounts. The reviews I’ve seen of this bike have all been favorable and having at least sat on one, I can vouch for it’s comfort and nice upright riding position.

    Good beginner bike? No.

I like the look of that bike (the GSX) but the weight would scare me off. Plus, I love my GS so much it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

You’re right. For some reason I thought Katana, but the review I read a while ago basically says it’s based on the Bandit design. Performance wise, it isn’t any different from a Bandit. I agree that it’s not a good beginner bike although, from the review below, it seems like suzuki is targeting a beginner market…
