yeah I kinda miss Seattle’s “2inches of snow…city shuts down for a week” mentality. that and living for 3 years there without ever wearing anything heavier than a jacket.

you see, we’re assuming he’s shifting on a 250cc which is so easy to shift it darn near shifts itself and is so light that the air from the oncoming rear car will safely push aside the bike before the car ever hits him. now if it were a liter bike, being in neutral would likely cause it to explode…be hit by a garbage truck…have sputnik fall on it…. ;)

what about sudden stops from highway speeds? now I know that in general one wouldn’t have that particular experience durring the driving test. but if something goes pearshaped in front of me while i’m motoring down the highway I know I can stop pretty quickly in general, but I don’t think I’ll have the oppritunity to down shift properly (ie 5th to 4th, release the clutch, drop the clutch, 4th to 3rd, release the clutch….etc…) in that situation. now in general I downshift 90% of the time, often doing the vast majority of my slowing down by downshifting and only using the brakes at the end (and about half the time its a mix of some brakes and downshifting) but for sudden or rapid decellerations i drop the clutch and the brakes.

and, if you’re clicked down to first gear, still going 40, and hit a bump or something that causes your hand to slip off the clutch…OR if you need to start moving again before you’ve come to a full and complete stop…

however I’ve seen people do the blip blip blip blip, come to a full stop and for the entire light….blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip….I dunno though, 90 percent of the cruisers out here just south of millwaukee are HD’s and maybe they’ve come out with a 50 gear bike? :D

I do a mix of downshifting on my jeep, where if timed right I don’t even START breaking till about 8mph, but if i’m stopping more quickly I’ll just drop the clutch shift to neutral and break quickly decellerate to a stop

those things are as sexy as they are expensive! you’ll definately turn heads. especially with the cute artsy girls that flock the downtown and pikes place ;)

the other people are being babies. or at least silly silly children.

I started a thread a while ago on bad advice given to me. some advice you’ll get is pretty darn scary. ride what you ride and be happy, it’s not their business what you ride (that being said, you pick up a liter bike, as rannette knows, we’ll lay into you a bit, but only out of concern for your safety) it’s not your responsibility to somehow make THEM look cool with a bigger bike.

pretty much any 250, even the cruisers will go through twisties much more nimbly than larger bikes, or so everyone keeps telling me. they won’t nessisarily go through as FAST as those super sports, but you can toss em around much easier with their lighter weight.

I hear a lot of people have some issues with the rebel. it seems a good blend of several 250’s, but a lot of people find them lacking, even with other 250’s. but no one doubts their tank like reliability, their ease of use, and their low cost. and a lot of people love them and don’t find them lacking at all. give it some time, and learn to run it to it’s limits (while expanding your own) and then sell it off for what you paid for it

personally, if you can’t tell if you did any damage to the bike, and your idle has actually improved, I’d argue that “wrecked” is far too strong a word.

truth is 250’s won’t lose you money, look at all the craigslist adds for 250’s going at or above retail and still being sold. you can buy one, and sell it off for what you paid, even more if you’re willing to wait for the proper time (beginning of the season rather than the end)

mopeds rock, btw, have you EVER seen an angry person on a moped? EVER? you can’t help but smile on one of those.

clearly you need to hang out with us, we’re cool, we support your choice to buy a bike thats safe for you.

not to mention almost every 250 I’ve ever heard of is carb, and most of them average high 60’s or better, the v-star claiming in the 80’s and several people say it’s closer to 90’s…sure they’re a lot smaller than the 500 or 650’s but thats a heck of a fuel ecconomy if carbs were THAT inefficient.
