Munch, your bike looks awesome. I already liked the color scheme and that Memphis Shade fairing looks great. I wonder how that would look on my Candy Plasma Blue 900 Custom. The other thing that interests me is risers. I don’t know how our handlebars compare, and I love my straight-style handlebar, but my grips are just a little too far to reach, I think. Anyway, your bike looks great!
ScottyJParticipantMunch, I’ll check out your bike. I don’t know that I’ll go darkside since I try to ride a lot of twisties and I “think” it would hurt my cornering. But it has definitely crossed my mind. So far the Shinko tire seems to be working well. And I’m right at 29K miles at ten days shy of two years. I’d love to hit 30K for two years (I don’t know why, it’d just be cool) but that means I’ll have to do some serious riding in the next week and a half. We’ll see.
ScottyJParticipantEddie, I ride from Allen to Richardson so it’s only about twelve miles if I take the highway and ten miles if I take the byway. I actually just moved within the city of Allen so I’m taking 75 (Central) to work in the morning and city streets home.
Munch, we’ll call it even but the fact is we both ride a good bit, especially compared to a lot of fair weather riders. So you put a fairing on your 900? You must have the Classic, right? I have been having some tire issues too so, although I’ve been running Metzelers in the past, I went inexpensive this time and I’m trying a Shinko tire on the front. Cost was about half or better of what a Metzeler would have cost, just under $50 including shipping.
ScottyJParticipantWow, has it been a year since I posted here? Amazing. I just wanted to post and let everyone know that I’m still vertical and I still absolutely love riding. I have well over 25K miles on the bike so I guess, going by my post from a year ago, that means I put 15K on the bike in the last year. My only mods in the last year have been the addition of a Cobra backrest and luggage rack. I’ll post a new pic where you can see them. Happy riding everyone!
ScottyJParticipantThursday afternoon while riding down the highway with my daughter on the back, I passed the 10,000 mile mark. Wow…10K miles in less than ten months of riding…pretty much loving every minute of it.
Today, I did my first big group ride, a charity ride called the Ride for Relief Nursery (http://ride-for-relief-nursery.webs.com/index.htm). It was kind of slow going at times but it was cool riding in a big group, having a police escort, not stopping for any lights or stop signs, and seeing people along the road waving. And, of course, the pre and post ride schmoozing was a lot of fun too.

ScottyJParticipantHey Clay, I have a pair of harness boots and I like them.
ScottyJParticipantNot to be argumentative but you don’t think those scream motorcycle boots? I have a pair of “touring” boots that I sometimes wear to work. They are similar to those Sidi boots and I think they look decent even though they are obviously motorcycle boots.
There are a ton of options as far as boots go. I would say, just try to figure out what style you want and what options you want, and then look at brands and prices. Idk, just two more cents.
ScottyJParticipantYou know what’s funny about my Harley boots? They’re made in CHINA! LOL. I would give one warning about going to a western wear store though, you want to make sure you do not get regular cowboy boots because they’ll be slick as cat ____. Make sure you get a good non-slip sole. And yeah, they definitely do not have to be H-D but a lot of similar boots are pricey as well.
ScottyJParticipantHit 6000 miles today so I thought I’d check in here.
I now have the Metz 200/70-15 on the rear and the Metz 90/90-21 on the front. The front tire looks a little bit bigger than the initial skinny Dunlop (because it is) but I still think it looks good. And so far I really do like the tires although they are a harder rubber.
Munch, I’m running 40 psi in the front and 41 psi in the rear. I’ll probably stay around there unless I see evidence of problems, i.e. cupping, performance issues, etc. Hopefully, these tire will last a long time because motorcycle tires are expensive.
ScottyJParticipantI bought some Harley Hustin (harness) boots for $90.
I bought them from jman1120 on eBay. Made an offer and he accepted. They’re very comfortable and they’re nice and high so your pants don’t rise above them when you’re riding.
ScottyJParticipantSangria7, you are wrong about the helmet law in Texas. Helmets are mandatory unless you’ve taken an MSF-type course or you can prove you have health insurance then you are technically exempt from the helmet law. I took the MSF course and I have medical insurance but I still wear a full face helmet because I want to not because I have to.
I just verified this info by Goggling “texas motorcycle statutes” and clicking on this link…

Munch, I can’t imagine using that unconstitutional argument when there are mandatory seat belt laws that are not deemed unconstitutional. There are also laws against suicide. So we are not always allowed to decide our own fate.
ScottyJParticipantIf it doesn’t automatically open that way, that’s the way I do it. I’m open to suggestions.
ScottyJParticipantRight-click then NEW TAB not NEW WINDOW should just open anew tab. I use Firefox on multiple computers and it works for me.
ScottyJParticipantBen, sounds good. I look forward to the updates as you find time to do them. And I do agree with Elwood, I think it’s a good idea to making opening a link in a new tab the default instead of directing away from the board. And Elwood, just an fyi, you can always right-click and choose “open in a new tab” if you want.
ScottyJParticipantAny thoughts of keeping post counts? I’m not looking to be the super poster guy but sometimes it helps in gauging if someone’s been on the board for awhile or if they’re a newbie.
