You’ll probably outgrow a 250, you may outgrow the 500. I would say get the ’07 ninja 250 since given that you might outgrow either the 250 or 500 and upgrade anyway, might as well learn the coordination on the easier of the 2. Of course, you should probably take my suggestion with a grain of salt since I started on an sv650s. ^_^

Howdy and welcome. Hope to hear more from you in the coming days, especially for your first thoughts on the ninja 650r as there doesn’t seem to be much around here about them.

Depending on the class of bike, full coverage’s buku bank. I ended up going with one step up of minimum legal+uninsured+medical and I’m paying 700.00USD/year. And insurance company’s are different in how they calculate their rates as well. Shop around is the only sound advice I can tell you. A good starting point is to look at state farm. From what I’ve heard, they seem to have the lowest moto rates amongst the major insurance carriers.

Edit: 700.00/year, not per month. per month would suck royally…

CX-1V Spectra Blue visor for Shoei RF-1000. Don’t wear sunglasses underneath as the visor’s tinted already and sunglasses just feel kinda awkward under the hood.

Didn’t need a motorcycle permit. Just a valid california driver’s license. After passing the course, you get an orange slip that entitles you to skip the rider portion of the DMV test. Take the written moto test (and the written driver’s test if you haven’t retaken it in 12 months) and then you get licensed for a car and a motorcycle. Not sure if maine works the same way though…

I found that using the rear brake helps out to level out your balance when coming to a stop. What I do, which some people actually recommend is to set up the stop with the rear brake first before engaging the front brakes. The rear brake by itself will transfer weight to the back of the bike. Using just the front brake puts all the weight to the front of the bike. Used together at the right time, you can keep the bike level when coming to a stop which helps keep you in balance and in place on the bike making it easier to stop smoother.

Hiya. Congrats on getting a bike and gear. Ben started on a gs500 and there’s a couple of other members that have that bike. From what everyone says, it is indeed a good bike. As far as motorcycling experience goes, I had 0 when I started the MSF earlier this year. It’s not necessary, but it probably does help to have some. G’luck at the course and ride on. (-:

Question that I have…when turning at these speeds do you counter lean at all or stay centered on the bike (go into the turn)?

when going at speed, you lean into the turn. When doing a real slow tight turn, like a uturn, you’ll want to intially counter balance and then lean into the turn when you accellerate out of the apex. Actually, I’m not really sure when else you’d want to counter balance except when doing a uturn.

You run the gamut of gear here in california. I see a lot of people wearing nothing but a helmet. I actually see very few people wearing full gear. Moped riders around here just wear open face helmets as if riding a moped magically makes it so you never get road rash if you skid. Some of them mopeds go pretty frickin’ fast too (500cc).

AFAIK, from what SuperMotard’s experience is, learning on a dual sport just as good as learning on a street bike. But if you’re really wanting a sports bike, just get a sports bike, imo. Oh yeah, welcome to the forums and glad to see you. (-:

Howdy and welcome! And no, you’re not the only one that likes the ninjas as kawa green. I’m not usually a color snob, but if i was gonna get a ninja anything, it’d be kawa green. ^_^

Thanks for organizing the meet up with Ray. Thanks to Ray as well for leading the ride. It was uber-fun. Me and Geoff definately had a blast.
