Hi. I have a question about insuring a bike. I bought a used bike and it is all paid for with no loan on it. So I assume I am not forced into having to get full coverage. I am actually not too sure what the actual levels of insuring a bike are and how much they vary on state/insurance company. I am a new rider and the bike is an older 250 Ninja. Should I go for full cover or try to save money and go with basic insurance? Thanks for reading and thanks for any replies in advance.

Not trying to jump his thread but on a older/used bike that if its even totaled your not concerned I assume that you could get insurance for that at a much cheaper rate than “full” coverage? My friend just got his first ever bike(at 42 :) yrs old) a Boulevard…he said that liability only only cost him $12 a month…..that kinda made me think a used bike caould be quite cheap as long as tis not your “primary” transportation.

No, if no loan you DONT need full coverage at least unless there is some funky regulation in your state that says you have to but I cant imagine that. I called 2 companies and gave them 3 bikes all 2004 model years for liability only and i think it was the 100/300 coverages that are typical. the 2 I called did not write 6 month policies(thats what I really wanted as the Bike will only be on the road April-October) so the coverages the quoted me is a year

    2004 Bikes Geico Progressive

    Buell Blast $162 a year $147 a year

    Suzuki GS500E $162 a year $ 107 a year

    Ninja 250 $ 162 a year $ 147 a year

The quotes were for me with no driving record and no safety course and Liability only So on a used inexpensive bike(I was assuming $3000 or less for the bike) thats not too bad for a full years coverages. Plus its less when I get the safety course If i finally pull the trigger on a bike. I figured worse came to worse I could put the bike purchase on a credit card lol to save from having the full coverage on a inexpensive used bike.

I went with one level less than I have on my car- so I’ve probably got way more than I need, but at 360 a year, I’d rather have too much. My S40 is fairly new (2007) and it is a 650- so that accounts for some of it. I started with allstate- which is where I have my car insured- and they ended up screwing up the policy and I got quoted 1500/year from them. I went next door to progressive and walked out with the 360 paid in full for the year. Shop around as much as you can take- for the same coverages geico quoted me 600 and some change- the prices will vary wildly.

Depending on the class of bike, full coverage’s buku bank. I ended up going with one step up of minimum legal+uninsured+medical and I’m paying 700.00USD/year. And insurance company’s are different in how they calculate their rates as well. Shop around is the only sound advice I can tell you. A good starting point is to look at state farm. From what I’ve heard, they seem to have the lowest moto rates amongst the major insurance carriers.

Edit: 700.00/year, not per month. per month would suck royally…

Minimum coverage, Ninja 250, age 44, 1 traffic ticket, $109 for a whole year. You might even not be able to get insurance on a bike through your regular car insurance company. My car insurance will not cover bikes no how no way, I had to go online through Progressive.

That’s funny. I just got my brand spankin new (to me) 2004 ninja 250 insured for $109/year. I’m 26, and I’ll just say that I can’t remember the last time I got a ticket. I got full coverage. I also have my car insured through them so I’m sure that helps as well.

I just got a quote for insurance for the bike I’m going to buy in the next couple of weeks. It’s a 2004 Honda Shadow ACE 750cc cruiser. For me the choice is easy for the insurance carrier. Since my house and two cars are already insured by USAA it makes sense for me to go with them. For the level of coverage I went to them for they quoted me $216/yr. I think this is pretty darn reasonable, but then again, I’ve never shopped for MC insurance before so I don’t have any experience to compare it to :P

I am a newbie with a clean driving record. Progressive charged me less than $120 per year. In addition, there is a discount for graduates of the Motorcycle Safety course.
