Winter? what’s that? We get spring, summer, and 2 autumns in the bay area… sometimes there’s rain… hopefully enough rain to get most other motocyclists off the road so I can ride in relative peace…

There probably is. The admin/owner of this site lives in the bay area. It does seem that it’s mostly us that get together and do group ride stuff. It’d be great if other members in the same area not in the bay area, cali would organize their own group rides and post pics and experiences. But, yeh this site is main california-centric…

You could try these suggestions. Try them all and see which one you’re more comfortable with.

    http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelbasedwin/tp/freephotoedw.htm

I use the gimp on windows, mac, and linux, but it’s a heavy weight program with a lot of features. I don’t personally like how they layout options in their menus and it can be quite confusing for someone just starting out with graphics editing. I’ve had stability issues with the gimp on windows in the past. I don’t use windows much anymore as my main systems at work and home are linux and macos.

What operating system are you using? windows, mac, linux? Finding that out will make it easier to getting you simple image manipulation programs for your platform.

I did a conversion for you. Just right click on the image and save image as and use it in your profile.

If she won’t listen to reason, might as well suggest the least evil of choices. Either a kawa 650r or an sv650sf. Both bikes will run circles around squids in the twisties and track… hell a good rider on a ninja 250 will do that too…

You should really work on her changing her friends if her friends are really squids. There comes a point, which is hard to do, that you just gotta let them go off and make their own decisions for better or for worse and just hope for the best. So yeh, I guess in a roundabout way, let her become a darwin recipient… She’s kinda the poster child on why we should probably move to a tiered licensing system.

I don’t think engine braking itself’s a bad thing. My bad thing is that I’d only use engine braking and not the brakes going into turns. With the SV650S, you don’t even have to downshift to get good slow down. All you have to do is to close the throttle below neutral throttle but don’t completely chop it and the bike will pull and slow down quite a bit. ABS helps on the trail braking part as well. I haven’t actually activated the circuitry when trail braking though, so that’s a good thing.

Me personally, I do engine braking coming to stops as well for the same reason of I like how that engine sounds when engine braking. ^_^

I do trail braking as well mainly because i take mostly late apexes out on the twisties. Since I don’t do any knee draggin, I use mostly rear brakes. I did start experimenting with front brake trail braking on a group ride today on right hande turns.

I notice today, while leading my group back, of a “bad” habit I’ve picked up which is to mainly use engine braking for slowing before turns and sometimes I come in hotter than engine braking will slow me down (thus the need for trail braking). Not to mention, if I lead, it becomes somewhat of an issue for the person following me because there isn’t that initial instant visual indication of the brake lights coming on to show that I’m slowing down which can lead to ass packing if the person following me doesn’t take a late apex line. Yes, I will be more conscious of using brakes for slowing down instead of using just engine braking…

You me both. I was looking at the scorpion exo 1000, but that got bad ratings as well for ventilation. To be honest, I can’t really tell if the vents do anything on my shoei rf1000. I do get the breeze on my face, but from the opening of the helmet from under the chin. I can tell the top vents are open by going real fast on the highway and twisting my head to the side above the windscreen… I get a high pitched whistling noise. I could tell the mouth vent was open as one time I got some random bug splat taste and a stringy bug leg on my lips. But other than that, can’t tell with just the feeling of air…

The MSF guys are pretty much against anything not using 4 fingers for braking. My instructors were kind of inconsistent with when to cover and when not to. Depending on the drill, they would suggest to cover the brakes or not. I myself don’t cover, it just feels wierd and gives me the sense of not having more feel of the throttle. Although, if i’ve deemed an upcoming situation as sketchy via S.E.E., i instantly slow down and cover with 2 fingers and possibly brake with 2 fingers. On modern bikes, you’ll get the “same” stopping power using 2 or 4 fingers on the lever.

Missouri, California? Never heard of that town… :-P

you can try this meetup thing. I used it in the past to find other linux users years ago… not sure how good it is now…

    There’s also,

    http://www.getyourrideon.com/clubs.cfm?sid=24

But that looks like it’s for clubs, which to me is kinda, meh…

Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone from MO, except for you that rides and that frequents this board.

Don’t know about controlling either and i’d say for the moment, forget about controlling the ipod. For listening, I use the cx400 noise isolation ear buds with the large ear adapters.
