truck driver not paying attention, motorcyclist not paying attention. Judging by the time the motorcyclist does notice the non stopping truck, i’d say even if he was in first he wouldn’t have been able to avoid getting hit. Being first and the only one at the stop light always a sketchy proposition. Not many outs that don’t involve entering cross traffic intersection. Hope the rider’s ok.

can’t go wrong with either the sv650sf or the 650r. Both these bikes are twin engine bikes, with good low end response and even power distribution. The sv normally getting the nod for better low end response though. This just basically means less shifting. Depending on your skill level riding dirt, you could be fine with an inline 4, since you should have decent throttle control from riding dirt bikes. For street bikes, the yamaha you’re looking at, is known as not a really good street bike from owners who have ridden them; mostly from a comfort stand point. As far as your dislike for suzuki, the sv650 line is known for being reliable, easy to ride, easy to maintain, and has a boat load of aftermarket and spare parts. As far as your height and weight, most sport bikes are already set up for you. Either way, good luck in finding the bike for you.

every once in a while, you just gotta open the bike. When I feel like it, it’s on the highway at non commute hours and I make sure the stretch of road i want to do it at doesn’t have cars in my lane or the next lane for a good long stretch.

I just use my helmet lock, if my bike has one. if you’re paranoid, which i am, in certain areas, carry it with you. in your case, ask the front clerks in your gym if you can leave the helmet behind their desk. You don’t normally see helmets being stolen as most riders won’t buy a used helmets, so to thieves, it’s pretty much effort for no gain.

if it makes you feel better, I know people that have done Reg’s class and they raved about it. I haven’t heard anything bad about Reg’s class.

You could probably knee drag on any bike. There’s a dude that knee drags on his gold wing up on youtube… :-P

Elwood: while there are school’s like keith code’s and kevin schwant’s schools that provide bikes, most track days, you use your own bike. The emphasis on making you a better, more confident rider on your own bike.

From everyone I’ve talked to, yes. Make sure you nab an instructor on track days though. Their advice on your riding will be really helpful.

who says you need to start up a bike to steal it? 2 guys, 1 van. ;-)

Anyhoo, i lock the steering. It shouldn’t be hard to do. Just make sure to push the key down while moving the key to the locked position. It’s been this way for all the sportsbikes i’ve ridden. It may be different for other class bikes, but i wouldn’t think so

So for me, this is what i’m doing for bike security.

    1. lock steering wheel.
    2. top of the line lojack service on all my bikes.
    3. park close to building or on sidewalk/wide-walkways in front of windows with foot traffic.

planning on getting a disc lock screamer as well. That covers most of the bike. Although if people want parts, they’ll still be able to get ’em off your bike. not much you can do there.

Edit: key should just come out when it hits the lock position. you may have to “wiggle” it out a bit.

what do you mean by weaving? like a cone weave thing in a single lane? usually around my parts, weaving, even when coming to a stop will get you a conversation with the local popo. Reflective tape, contrasting bright colors in your gear, modulating brake lights are pretty good things. Take note on the modulating brake light though. In some places that’s an illegal mod and a cop having a bad day can pull you for that.

it all really depends on what you wanna do with your bike. If you can get the basics down on that bike, a couple of track days should sort you out handling turns and what not. the only problem i see with ss litre bikes is just getting the basics down. I’ve gone on plenty of twistie group rides with people who had litres and they ride the hell out of them in the A paced group.
