All caught on a police mounted video cam. Truck driver not paying attention.
October 12, 2008 at 2:28 pm #13745JimParticipantOMG that is harsh! Hope dude was OK. Don’t you mean “shouldn’t be in neutral?
October 12, 2008 at 2:36 pm #13746megaspazParticipanttruck driver not paying attention, motorcyclist not paying attention. Judging by the time the motorcyclist does notice the non stopping truck, i’d say even if he was in first he wouldn’t have been able to avoid getting hit. Being first and the only one at the stop light always a sketchy proposition. Not many outs that don’t involve entering cross traffic intersection. Hope the rider’s ok.

October 12, 2008 at 4:10 pm #13752MunchParticipantAgree with Mega, I have noticed oddly enough to that when I ride my bike I somehow end up at the front of the line alot more then I used to. Weird.
This is also another example of (IMPO) that the police should move traffic violations away from potential danger hazards. THEY know that people will rubber neck and see what is going on rather then whats ahead of em. The police officer was at just as much fault as the rider and driver. What was he thinking having someone pulled at a stop light.
Yes the rider wasn’t paying attention… he was probly watching the cop too and not the traffic behind him. First gear would have not saved his injuries ( hoping thats all he got). However you should never be outta first at the very least. Why take yet another option to keep yourself safe away when its not necessary? Safety gear works great……. works even better when you don’t have to put it to use.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
October 12, 2008 at 5:48 pm #13754bob250ParticipantJust curious where a bike should be stopped, left, right or middle of the lane? I always stop in the left hand part of the lane in case I have to get over quickly. Plus, being directly in front of the drivers side I figure they have a better chance to see me. I also have a modulating brake light because of clips like this. From the vid, it looks like the guy on the bike at the last second tried to jump off the bike. Hope he is alright and the asshole driving the truck gets what he deserves.
October 12, 2008 at 6:57 pm #13755chromium ghostParticipantJebus H Christ. The truck actually jumped a bit after it hit him. Also looks like he tried to get off the bike when he realized this douche was not slowing down.
October 12, 2008 at 7:01 pm #13756AmorylParticipantI know that people historically don’t notice motorcycles, but something tells me that idiot in the pickup wouldn’t have noticed a car either. look at how close he was to not just the rider, but to the intersection before he even began to brake (and brake suddenly, showing he finally realized something was in front of him) if the motorcycle wasn’t in the way, he’d have either stopped in the intersection itself, or he’d have blown through it. doesn’t help the bike any either way…
but as for blaming the cop…maybe he stopped the guy too close to the intersection, maybe thats just where the guy finally stopped (if there was no shoulder, a bridge, other hazard prior…this could have been the closest to a “safe” place to stop) plus if the light was red when he stopped, where else would he have stopped? run the red?
I’m not sure where the best position is, some say to the right so you can pull off the road faster if someone was doing crap like that…some say (though I’ve heard more against this than for it) the center so you can react in either direction…though from a psychological standpoint I think thats even more dangerous. the more choices you have in that sudden moment, the more likely you’ll freeze and choose neither. I’ve not heard much about the left, you could maybe pull into oncoming traffic….but you WOULD be right in front of the driver’s pov…

I wasn’t primarily blaming the officer …but yes…. in the picture you can see that the intersection has a right hand turn and could easily have got on his standard issue PA system to tell the driver to turn right into a safer area. I see these kinds of jam ups everyday to and from work due to LEO’s having to pull some person or another for something moronic. But you have a good point… now there’s 4 people to blame… the driver that got pulled. Perfect example of how MSF tells you that no ONE person is to blame but there is always other factors that come into play.
As far as best spot… If you use the three section method… 1 being left 2 center and 3 right I would say I sit far left of section 2. I am closer to the drivers view point but I still got room to jam out if its possible.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
October 13, 2008 at 4:43 am #13771LokiParticipantIf you notice the biker just came to a stop when the truck hit him. Also it does seem like i get in the front more often then i do in a vehicle.
October 13, 2008 at 6:52 am #13774smokeizfireParticipantavoid a blind driver from barreling into him..
HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS WINS
October 13, 2008 at 1:56 pm #13783AndrewParticipantChecking his mirrors would have helped but who would expect the guy in the truck to not even stop?
October 13, 2008 at 3:34 pm #13791ReindeerParticipantAgreed… I don’t think it would have made any difference in that case.
October 13, 2008 at 9:55 pm #13815AmorylParticipantevery day I’m constantly amazed that no one barrels into the back of my work van at a light. unlike motorcycles I have a lot more inbetween my body and the front end of a car, but I also have much less chance to get out of the way.
on the other hand I was rearended a few weeks ago while stopped at train crossing about 5 minutes into a freight train passing by. fortunately she was only going 5 or so mph (turned her head to look for something, let off the brakes) didn’t put a scratch on my van (at least that I could see from all the other dings, scratches, and dents already there) and no obvious damage to her bumper, so I bid her a good afternoon, and went back to my van. on a motorcycle…well I hope I’d have noticed and moved to the side, otherwise, even a 5mph love tap coulda caused a decent amount of trouble for my day. some idiot screaming down the road paying no attention whatsoever to the road…not a whole lot you can do about it but hope you notice him fast enough and can get out of the way.
